Footscray in 1971

In the last 60 years, migration has played a key role in the development of the social and cultural fabric of our suburbs. Footscray was a relatively self-contained suburb during the 1940s. In the 1950s and 60s after the Second World War, a massive wave of immigration from Europe resulted in an enormous spike in population. This saw the town centre develop into a bustling hub of activity, with the eventual opening of the Nicholson Street Mall in 1971.

Has this been verified as 1971? It appears to show a tram to Williamstown Road, a local route which closed in 1962. www.hawthorntramdepot.org.au/papers/footscray.htm The tram shown (number 460) was also withdrawn from service in 1962.

Seems to be mixing films from different eras. In the tram segment I do not see any cars newer than about 1961. They are likely dating it from the Mall opening only.

This looks older than 71 as of the car models

There's a handful of cop cars parked in the footage and they're a mixture of ,1969, 1970 and 1971 XT, XY and XW Ford Falcons and there's a 1970 HG Holden Kingswood parked there too so 1971 would be pretty accurate.

@@safstar0184 I've just seen this now and all the cop cars parked on the side of the road are models ranging from 1969 to 197. Ford's and Holdens. So 1971 would be correct.

It would still be this vibrant if Highpoint didn't exist. Go down to a $2 shop now in say, Nicholson St., and they are 50-50 to even have a floor.

Its the expansion of highpoint to where its now the 4th largest shopping centre behind Chadstone which killed Footscray. Overall, Footscray now has something for everyone, from the gentryfication types down to the pathetic and everything in-between.
