Assoc Football popularity (historically) is directly related to reach of the British Empire and all its business dealings in the late 1800's/early 1900's. Back in the day of the late 1800s in Britain, there were multiple sports that went by the name of football, the two prominent ones being association football and rugby football. Since the U.S. still had strong connections with the UK, the same sports were played in both countries. Futbol isn't the most popular sport in China, India or the U.S. (that is almost 50% of worlds population there and the 3 most populous countries). It might be tied with basketball or table tennis in China. Nor is it the most popular in Australia, Canada or Ireland. China has never scored a goal in WC and India has never played a match. I shake my head at how many people criticize the U.S. for trying to commercialize the rest of the world with monotonous products and hegemony, then use the same argument to justify their favorite sport as being superior (McDonalds and Coke everywhere = bad, futbol = superior sport!).

No. As a former player of American football, we have no international competiton, but that's not to say there aren't leagues internationally. In 1998 the International Federation of American Football was established and currently has 105 member nations. 11 in Africa, 21 in North and South America, 27 in Asia, 4 in Oceania, and believ it or not, Europe has the most member nations with 41.

That one country is the most important single media market on the planet. Which is why the NFL is the richest sports league in the world by a huge margin. Also, the popularity argument is just silly. This is only a debate in the US. Pretty much the whole world agrees that football/soccer is better than American football. If American football was the best, then surely more people would like it around the world. American movies and culture are popular worldwide, as are some of it's other sports, such as basketball, but American football is just not popular outside of the US. The fact that Americans are debating whether a foreign sport such as soccer is better than their own football should tell you something. I can absolutely guarantee you that no soccer nation is even considering having this debate, because American football is not even on their radar.

chaosXpert Modern soccer first spread naturally across Europe and Russia, neither of which were ruled by the UK. Then many of these major European nations then spread football worldwide. If there wasn't something naturally attractive about soccer then it would not have organically become the most popular sport across the many independent nations of Europe in the first place. It does seem reasonable that soccer never gained a strong foothold in the US because US sports became a symbol of US identity and also of US independence from the UK. The US may also have on some level resisted soccer for this reason.

+darren mott of course 1 game of soccer/football is very exciting filled with amazing passing tackles and skills no matter the score. But what some people who only watch soccer/football and don't watch American football is that it can be just as exciting. Watching a team you cheer for down by 4 making a 4th quarter comeback is very exciting. I'm not saying that American football is better than soccer/football in any way what I'm saying is that neither is better than the other and both can be very exciting as long as you understand the game.

First and foremost, in a regular season, a draw equals 1 point, and that 1 extra point is crucial on deciding who can be champion of the league during may. In a two legged competition like the champions league, a 0-0 means you haven't conceded an away goal, and come second leg, as long as the game is a tie, you can advance to the next round. So there is actually a lot to celebrate with a 0-0 scoreline. :P

The term dates back Medieval Europe were the peasants played games on their feet and the nobility on their horses. That's why "real" football (for Europeans) is technically called association football while "real" football (for Americans) is technically called American football.

You might as well argue if Coke or Beer is better. These sports are barely comparable.

two things the reason it's called football is because you kick the ball with your feet. you don't use a soccer in any way also In hand egg you pass the the ball you Carrie the ball WITH YOUR HANDS you hardly use your feet so why is it called football.

This is how American Football got invented. They saw rugby and witnessed how awesome it was. But they realized Americans are too weak to play rugby so they put on shoulderpads. Then they have to think of a name and they like the name football, the number one sport in the world, so they call it American Football like a 6 year-old would. That sums it up.
