Alright I live in Australia, particularly in vic we have the Australian League Football, and we use the term Soccer to avoid confusion with our own version of football, but I understand AFL is an Australian thing, I understand a good majority of the world will refer to Soccer as Football, so I don't understand why a lot of Americans automatically assume Gridiron when they hear the term football, what is this cultural ignorance and why do so many Americans believe the world revolves around them?

***** The term we learnt was Soccer too, that's what I was pointing out, I didn't have to grow up in another country to eventually figure out it was a term only a selection of countries use, that being said it's difficult to generalize all of the US because not everyone is the same, there are the ignorant stereotypes and then there are open minded people that you don't hear about. I guess i'm genuinely biased against America, I have a problem with the economical structures of the US being imperial, but this is not the time or place to debate that. /rant

I expected people to be arguing what the name of the ball is. But instead I saw people expecting there to be arguments of what the name of the ball is.

I live in the States and even I think soccer should be called football. It's played with your feet almost exclusively. While what we call football is almost (except for kickoffs and field goals) completely played with your hands. How about adopting a Latin scientific naming convention for sports like is used in other areas? "Good evening everyone and welcome to Monday night adepto ovaloid trans metam." I would probably die of laughter.

+Merlin Magnus Marketing understands there's a reason why most people don't know the full Latin scientific names for every animal or organism. Marketing is also trying to sell American Football to the masses, lol. Think about how introducing Latin would affect the marketability of American Football, for example how easily the terms and titles are understood. Distancing language is never a good thing when you're trying to market to the masses. It's good when you want to shy lazy people away from being doctors or biologists, though. And yes I understand why they use that standardized Latin nomenclature as well. I'm just saying, it may have a practical purpose, but it's not good for marketability, lol.
