Brian Clough, "the greatest manager England never had". Nothing is more true.

Brian Clough and Peter Taylor were the greatest managerial team in football history. Not once but twice they took modest 2nd division clubs from the Midlands and made them champions of England. They took Derby to the semifinal of the European cup and Nottingham Forest to two consecutive European cup triumphs. The sad thing was Clough and Taylor fell out and never spoke again. They could never have been as successful on their own as they were together.

Derby were robbed by a cheating ref in the European Cup. The Italians were up to their usual ref-inducing antics. All done under the aegis of the Morratis. The same ones that paid the ref to let Inter Milan score direct from an indirect freekick then kick one out of Tommy Lawrence's hands and into the net vs Liverpool in 1965's European Cup Semi-Final in the San Siro. Dortmund were cheated in 1964 but in 1966 the Hungarian ref refused Inter's bribe vs Real Madrid. I think the bone of contention for Clough's Derby side was Colin Todd being sent off. And Clough let the waiting Italian media know exactly how he felt afterwards.

No football manager in the history of life will ever take a rubbish football team from the depths, and turn them into the best of Europe. I miss Cloughie.

Shankly ? Its a well known fact that the ref in Liverpools semi in 65 took a bribe against Inter . Not undersestimating what Clough by the way. Ps. The pen at Old Trafford in 78 was outside the box by a mile.

I think you're right, today's managers take small clubs and make a name for themselves and then join a bigger club. I think Clough was a mad man but in the most positive way, he wanted to prove to everyone that he could do it with Derby and he did, then wanted to prove it to the management of Derby County that they had made a mistake and he did that with Nottingham Forest. He was a crazy and incredible man, I think if he had gotten the England job they would have at least made the finals once or even win the world cup. I think Mourinho is the only manager that can come a bit close to Clough as in doing what he wants and having success his way but Brian Clough was special and irreplaceable.

For anyone watching this- the younger generation-can you imagine watching this team? I was a young lad age 9, and watching my team win the second division- then on to win the old 1st- then European cup twice- it was well beyond my wildest dreams, and to this day is still an total inspiration to me. We never were that fashionable- and we knew it. Being an underdog is very special

Forest didn't win the 2nd Division, they scraped up in 3rd. But how I wish I'd been alive when they achieved all this, instead of the 25 years of mainly rubbish I've been through!

Best memories of my childhood. Too young to stay up and watch the game (or not allowed) covertly listening to the match in my bedroom on a JPS Lotus car radio, "Frances scores!" Amazing, thank you Nottingham Forest for great memories; an amazing team.

I'm 20... what I would've done to meet Brian Clough. Missed out on the Forest golden years and missed out on some quality live music back in the 80s and 90s, gutted to be born in 98!

Most teams always had two defenders on John Robertson but they still couldn't stop him. Fabulous player.

Yep Similar style has one Jacky Grealish but Robertson often done his opponents "on the outside" which surprised them with him being right-footed. He was so good you couldn't predict which way he was going to go and he SCORED A GOOD FEW IMPORTANT GOALS TOO (Take note Jack)!!

Would of been nice if it had also mentioned the UEFA Super Cup 1980 where we played Barcelona twice Drawing 1-1 Away and Winning 1-0 at home!

That is when I fell in love with English football. And I am a Manchester United supporter but Nottingham Forrest still brings warmth to my heart.

To take a team from the old English second division to division one, win the division one league, then win back to European Cups, in just a few seasons, is nothing short of a miracle. The Late Brian Clough (R.I.P), was a footballing genius.

I grew up watching that team,what a childhood i had,the colin barrett goal i was in the brifgeford end in the corner and i can still see his goal like it was yesterday,brilliant goal.So lucky to have grown up then.

I’ve said it before but for a few brief years John Robertson was probably the best player in the world. Made one European Cup winning goal and scored the other. He was on his way out when Clough and Taylor arrived - not considered the best player in the Club. To then go on to do what he did - phenomenal. That’s what trust, belief and a plan can do when married with talent.

I listened to an interview with Viv Anderson and he remarked on this type of turn around / reinvention of players Clough was capable of.

How can a football club, ignored by the press and looking at relegation from the 2nd tier of football into the dark side, be suddenly transformed into Champions of England, And then Champions of Europe. Twice. Using the same players that were unrecognised useless losers. Gamblers. Has beens. Carpet Fitters. Chancers. It can only be down to management. Some man called Brian Clough, and his best pal Peter Taylor. They had chemistry. Brian Clough took Forest from the bottom, turned them into Champions of England and Europe, and then gently led them back where he found them. It was a fantastic journey. It was emotional. And it will never be repeated.

forest never won consecutive league titles. they won the league in 77/78. it was the european cup they won in consecutive seasons, 78/79 and 79/80

I stood in that dressing room at age 9... took shots on Peter Shilton.. shook the hand of robbo ... I'm 55 now.. for this Canadian kid.. a thrill of a lifetime.. Clough was a God...

MY greatest memories as a 13 yr old, going to see my beloved Forest..Memories which will stay with me forever.Old big head was and always will be the greatest manager that ever lived..

My Dad was the same, especially about the season they did for Liverpool in the EC, despite Liverpool winning Div 1 that season. I think it was a triple European Cup of 1978-79 he was hoping for. In hindsight, I still doubt Cloughie would have got Forest past Bayern to the Paris final in 1981. Liverpool rode an onslaught from the Germans to win that European Cup. It's still amazing English sides had only lost one (1983) from 8 European Cups. Cloughie achieved such a huge amount in such a rapid time. High octane, something Ipswich and Bobby Robson almost emulated. The game has changed so much now that managers and coaches are just cheap and throwaway, like sticks of chewing gum. Clubs just will not ride out poor dips of form, but every good boss has bad spells. Even Paisley said he had a bad season, ironically it was that 1980/81 season when they were 5th, yet still European Champions with their first ever League Cup win against Hammers

@@andrewphippsphillips1455 also LFC won a hard UEFA cup in '76.. Arsenal won the CWCup in 1980.. Spurs won the UEFA Cup in 1984.. Leeds runners up in European Cup 1975! Amazi g dominance.. and if the ban hadn't happen who could have handled LFC and EFC!

I played for Kenny Burns' brother (Alan Burns) in the United States (he was a medical researcher on assignment), from 1975-1977.......I got introduced to English Football & have followed Forest ever since.

F hell little Forest knocked the European Champions out of Europe, wait for it, it gets better, they went on to win it. Thank you Brian Clough and Peter Taylor.

Brian Clough quote '' theres nothing wrong with being arrogant - as long as you have something something to be arrogant about'' (said with his accent).

Too true-only Mohammad Ali and Clough got away with it as they knew how good they were. Remember Tony Greg ,England cricket captain in 76 saying before a test match with the West Indies "You either let them play and beat you or you make them grovel. We aim to make them grovel" The headline the next day ? England lost the first test v The West Indies by an innings and 180 runs..." should have looked at his team and realised there was no cause for arrogance!

What a play of John Robertson in both finals!! For me he was a hero of that Forest.

It's the greatest story in the game and a prime example of "anything can happen, nothing is impossible"

I love rooting for Nottingham and Leicester city. I don't really like rooting for the top 6 because it's the same story with them. With Nottingham and Leicester, there's history and passion. Nottingham with those 2 European titles and Leicester with the greatest shock in modern sports winning the Prem

My thoughts exactly. To do, not only what they did, and not only from where they were but twice and with a level of style and excitement that is astonishing. As good as any in history, its that simple.

Monumental achievement. I’m not sure we’ll ever see this again. Cloughie was a genius.

As a Forest fan we have been through a lot of lean years but I am old enough to remember that first season in the first division under Clough, the league cups, the European Cups, the great players. They were incredible times and I don’t know if they can ever be repeated in this era. Clough and Taylor were managerial magic. If only they could have continued as a partnership but all good things come to an end I suppose.

A very special story. After all this time Clough and Taylor’s achievements with Forest seem even more remarkable.

I remember Forest's rise under Cloughie and Taylor and, as a young Liverpool supporter, Forest was the one club I was worried about. However I still don't feel that team got the recognition it deserved and always wonder what England would have achieved with Brian Clough & Peter Taylor in charge.

England got better late 80’s. But then it’s Clough or Robson, Captain Marvel got injured, then Gazza losing focus! As a Scot it is always delightful to watch the England saga, but as person, I think, fate should cut you a break. Best manager, potentially iffy team, second choice Best manager, bloody Germany and no Robson. Cloughie never got a chance though. Taylor player selection/ Clough player management, No disrespect to our guys of the time but we would have accepted that English management.

This will never happen again, Guaranteed. Sir Brian Clough was Unique, a One off Footballers Genius who would’ve on the World Cup for England had the FA any sense. He will always be The Greatest Manager Ever RIP GENIUS

A totally different era. The players in the Celtic team which won the European Cup in 1967 were all born within 10-15 miles of Parkhead.

I am a Liverpool fan, and have been for all my life. I well remember Nottingham Forest, and the epic encounters we had with them. I can tell you that back then, they were one of the JUGGERNAUTS of English and European football. When we were drawn together, in the Eurpean Cup [ as it was known back then, back in 1979, I literally CRIED when they knocked us out. Yes, we had some gigantic encounters with them It is a damn shame that they find themselves in the position they are in now. Just goes to show you how quickly it all can end. Clough and Tayler were geniusus for doing what they did at Forest.

It's very easy to get misty-eyed with nostalgia about this era, but let's agree on one thing- the pitches were shocking.

Prior to Cloughie at Forrest, teams tended to either have a youth team conveyor belt or bought stars from smaller clubs. Clough and Taylor specialised in finding players approaching their prime years who has been either discarded or overlooked elsewhere and had massive point to prove.

This team should inspire every professional football club on the planet. It really shows just how many amazing players that aren't ever really put in the best position to win.

I saw cloughs rising side first in 75. Their winger terry Curran ripped us to shreds.lost 0 2 Such an entertaining team throughout the late 70s. The best I have witnessed including the mighty Liverpool as close rivals.

In today's money, it would be like Jurgen Klopp taking tranmere rovers from league 1 to champions of England and Europe in 4 seasons. It will never ever be repeated. He should've had knighthood the man was a football genius. RIP Sir Brian you will never be forgotten. 🔴⚪COYR⭐⭐FTID⚪🔴

I think some of the key parts were already in place when Clough joined Forest. There were five players who were already at the club when Clough was appointed who were in the starting XI for the European Cup Final . It was also a time when continental sides had real problems dealing with English teams who won the European Cup six years running. But it's still a fantastic achievement.

As a Liverpool supporter for 64 years. I enjoyed watching Nottingham Forrest win the trophies they did for those years. Fantastic players and Clough would have taken England to a few World Cup Finals and won them. Well done Nottingham Forrest and Brian Clough.

As a Liverpool supporter I remember very well Notts Forest knocking us out of the European Cup and beating us in the League Cup final, as well as winning the league. That was a GOOD Liverpool team (Daglish, Hansen, Souness) so to get the better of us was a huge achievement.

Those where the days when we had a truly great side and beat the mighty Liverpool who where the strongest side in Europe at the time. What I also like was the great team spirit within the team and the way we played.

British football stopped developing talent in the 1990s. It is all now about buying in ready made foreign players rather than teaching and developing young British talent. Hence why Scotland, Wales, Ireland could not string 5 passes together and England are not much better.

As a young Leicestershire lad going to the Forest ground with dad carrying my wooden platform to get me high enough to see over the wall. Watching Frank Wignall nod in the goals… aaahhh memories of youth. Thanks for this great video I had emigrated to the US before this team played. Watched Shilton play many, many times at Filbert street and there was none better and probably never will be. Clough and Taylor too smart for their own good.

I am a Manchester United supporter and that is that. But how the hell do you take a team that just moved back into the premier league and they won every trophy 3 years later. Impossible, but yet it happened.

The modern day equivalent would be Wolves today. But the top flight title today is so much harder to win than it was in the late 70's. The pace is faster, the players fitter, and the tactics more astute. Still, I suppose is futile trying to compare eras.

Forrest got murdered v Cologne, but had Shilton.

Trevor Francis had unbelievable pace. I saw him tear a side apart in 80 or 81 at the City Ground - they couldnt handle him every time he got the ball he looked like scoring - until they hacked him down and he was stretchered off the field.

No one will ever have an achievement to their name like Nottingham forest , Brian cough and Peter taylor nailed it and then nailed it again

It’s sad to think that something like this will never happen again because in today’s football world and all sports really there is soooo much money being thrown about that just about every player is a millionaire in their first 2 years on the pitch. The money comes mainly from three sources. Advertising/endorsement The fans through ticket sales and purchasing of products And the middle eastern oil money. I hate seeing our players covered in words like “emirates” etc. Of course I use the phrase “our players” rather loosely lol considering a good percentage of them aren’t even from the U.K. anymore. We have players that even after being on a U.K. team for several years still can’t speak English or at best a few words and phrases. One of the things I love about the World Cup is players play on the team from their country of origin. Rinaldo for Portugal Messi for Argentina etc. Imagine if Clough had coached Beckham or Messi. The pitch would have caught fire lol

It's ironic that the first million was spent by Forest. Forest have struggled to get into the modern day era of football=money. Ran as a committee until the late 80s! In exactly the same format when it was formed in 1865!

@@wanwandokko Yes that was true that the first million was spent by forest but it was all down to Clough selling key players at the right time so that the club would have finances. Clough would buy a player for nothing, sell him for big money and when he flopped else where buy him back for a fraction of the sale price.

Kenny Burns was a decent striker at Birmingham. Seeing beyond that, seeing he’d be a better centre half, is genius.

As the players to a man shared..Brian Clough and Peter Taylor were at the centre of it. Without Clough and Taylor none of it could've happened..Their early success with Derby County pointed toward what was to come.. Amazing!

I’ll always support Arsenal but stories like Nottingham Forest are some of my favorite in all of football. Those guys competed with the best teams Europe had to offer and took them down more often than not. It’s a shame what ended up happening to them because their fans deserve better but hopefully they’re on the way back up again. The premier league is where they belong

Nottm Forest playing Liverpool in Europe. Forest winning 1-0. Impossible. John Robertson was a genius, at QPR we had Stan Bowles and Forest had a similar but way more successful player. Robertson if HD live more healthier etc in my view would not have had the same impact.Taylor and Cloughs blind eye helped him when it mattered to the team.

and it still makes people bitter and envious that we did it with at the time a team of nobodies but proved to be legends in the end :)

I have a bee in my bonnet! I think McGovern played in the Makelele position, a lot before Claude.. A pain in the arse, to the opposition, before they get to the final third, but transformable into Ok playmaker. Energy. Energy. Energy and obviously fit as fuck John McGovern

As a Blackpool fan who clearly remembers the late 70s and how when forest and Bolton got promotion to the old 1st division my team were third and 1 point behind second place Bolton ....for me Forestcwere my second team and loved the way they crashed the 1st division and then topped Europe twice !!...

James Golder Forest will never be forgotten, they get mentioned by commentators when their not even playing!

A great, great team, and they were the only real threat to Liverpool in their Glory years of the late 70's. That nucleus of the team, though, were definitely broken up way too early. They could and should have been a challenge to Liverpool into the early to mid 80’s as well. Not to mention, it was never the same when Taylor left after falling out with Clough.

great manager good team dont forget the other great teams in that time IPSWICH VILLA liverpool as well as forest a time when a english team reach and won most euro finals

I watched a CD of Brian Cloughs Forest achievements. There was only one bit missing. It was at the end. He loved Frank Sinatra. And Frank Sinatra sang a certain song. It was called 'My Way'. That CD should have ended with that song. Because it summed up everything Cloughie was about. He certainly did it his way. 'And now the end is near ..............................

Brian Clough - an absolutely fascinating man - Shakespeare could have written a play about him - would it be comedy or tragedy?-actually both. If only he hadn't fallen out with Peter Taylor who kept him properly balanced, they could have gone on for years. I think the drink shows there was damage in his soul which was never healed and which may have prevented him from fully enjoying his successes. Did he realise how much people loved him? We saw that behind the exterior (which we absolutely loved) was a genuine man and we rooted for him even when we supported other teams. RIP Brian

What an amazing era. Martin O'Neill definitely took Cloughie's attitude into his managerial career and emulated his success in making winning teams from nothing, and came very close to a UEFA Cup. John Robertson was mesmeric and I think in my lifetime if I had a to pick a starting eleven, it would be very difficult not to put Shilton in goal, he defied logic at times, talk about cat like reflexes.

Excellent video - my first match was vs. Charlton Athletic - drew 1-1, I was 11? - superb Trent End years - Wembley twice & Old Trafford - celebrating on the bus home with half of Nottingham smiling when we beat Man U 4-0 away. The street parades remember them? Put Nottingham on the map - great years

You could never make this up...what odds in 1975 that in a few years a lowly second division team would win repeat Euro Cups...at least 50,000 to 1. Also what they did with Derby, Cloughie and Taylor have to among the GOATS
