Football's $1 Billion Bank Fraud Scandal

Спорт

Whilst football is a joyous sport, adored almost all the world over, the business of football is often a murky world made up deceit, money laundering, and extremely sketchy characters.
Whilst watching UEFAs new Europa Conference League, I discovered one such example - the tale of a Moldovan team whose owner and president has been implicated in a $1 billion bank fraud scandal that almost bankrupted Europe's poorest nation.
So in this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at Moldova's 2015 top flight title winners Milsami Orhei, their controversial owner, and the crime he is accused of committing.

    And football is more than just a game. In the case of teams such as Sunderland, Bolton and Bury, they're the pride of the city. And in places as destitute as Moldova, they both willingly and unwillingly play a part in the fragile political landscape of Post-Soviet lunacy and geopolitical Autism.

    The Conference League has already provided Irish clubs our strongest performances in Europe for a while. Although Shamrock Rovers remain the only team standing, 1 round away from the groupstages, Dundalk and Bohemians gave amazing accounts of themselves against Vitesse and PAOK respectively. People look down on conference league because they think of NBA, NFL, yet these people failed to realize that this is what’s helping smaller clubs compete. You are offering them an opportunity that no German club will get a chance to beat the top clubs and win. The NBA for example: the Milwaukee bucks just won their 2nd championship and they are a small market team. The Cleveland Cavs won their championship because of Lebron James and they are a small market. A team that is Small market mean that the team is located in small markets. Compare to LA and NY, the market is huge, that’s why it’s best to give these cities a team. Miami Heat is another team in which Miami, Florida has great weather and it’s another destination for players to want to play there. And the organization knows how to take care of their players. They are a great organization. A small market cites like Detroit isn’t a good place to place a team there. Small market means less ticket sales. Large market memes bigger ticket sales.

    13:09 Maia Sandu is actually hugely praised in Romania as well. She's far better than any of Romania's politicians. Romanians have a very strange relationship with anti-Semitism, and by that I mean that many people just tend to brush it aside as long as someone's name pops up on the news or in a history book consistently enough. Another politician may have openly praised or stood by Antonescu, so this example actually feels very mild as a Romanian

    They should have that chance instead of being effectively barred from Europe because they're not Big Money clubs and can't afford the top talent for lack of revenue. I like the whole idea of the Conference League. I've been gaining a greater appreciation for lower division and non-league football lately: greater diversity of teams, less predictable competitions and you don't end up seeing the same four of five sides in the cup finals every year. For these smaller clubs and leagues, the Conference is a chance for European competition they otherwise wouldn't have a hope of getting into, a chance for silverware they otherwise wouldn't have a hope of winning, opportunities for the players to be tested on an international stage they otherwise wouldn't get, and TV exposure they otherwise wouldn't ever get outside their own countries, all for being priced out of the reach of the Champions or Europa Leagues.

    This was the best and most thought provoking thing I've seen for a while. I got out of the UK because of the way things were going, as did a lot of people, not just EU citizens, on a scale well beyond what is being widely reported there. I've seen an estimate of 1.3 million, which might have something in it and explain the current empty shelves and unharvested crops. However Moldova lost a third of its population? Wow! The exodus from the UK was/is on nothing like that scale. When I look at the UK and see the almost daily steps back towards the dark ages (the utterly pointless restoration of imperial weights and measures anyone?) I get depressed and angry, but it's nowhere near on the scale of what has happened in Moldova. I don't know whether to feel reassured and think the situation in the land of my birth is not so bad in the grand scheme of things or whether to look at the abyss that is Moldova currently and despair at how bad things can get without a turn of the corner being forced. Not bad for a video which when I started watching it I assumed was all or mostly about football.

    Could I get some opinions on this. I’m Australian and the first football fan in my family. When I was getting into football we had a foreign exchange student from Munich who got me into supporting Bayern. This was at a young age and I’ve only started watching the games over the last few years. It comes today when I’ve became more passionate about Australian football that I’ve learned about the likes of Harry Kewell and Viduka and how good they were at Leeds and it has made me fallen in love with the club. Is it plastic to switch?

    My brother and to some extent I support Hammarby, a first division Swedish team, as Sweden doesn't have a big league before this change the team that won the Swedish league only got a qualification playoff place to the Champions League and 2nd and 3rd place got qualification playoff to the Europa League, but now 2nd, 3rd, and Swedish cup winner get Europa Conference league now. The Swedish teams usually don't go far in the Europa League if they even qualify, so the Europa conference league gives smaller teams a chance to win a European competition.

  • @alohatigers1199
    @alohatigers11992 жыл бұрын

    I’ve been saying this for years. A conference league structure can benefit smaller teams against top club with financial advantage to offer top players larger contracts. The NBA, NFL, MLS is the best example. People look down on it for no reason. So i have a question: Do you like competition? Do you like to see smaller clubs have an opportunity to compete on a level playing field with the top teams? If competition is what’s good for football, if competition is entertaining, then conference league is the structure.

    The Europa Conference League IMO adds little to nothing in regards to European club competitions. With only the play-offs to go, teams from 29 nations have guaranteed presence in the Group Stage of either of the three tournaments with 10 more nations from the Champions Path of the UECL fighting for 5 guaranteed spots meaning that 34 nations will have at least one team in either GS phase. Not as diverse and one may think, considering that last season 27 nations had at least one team in the Group Stage of either the Champions League or Europa League. And to top it off - this tournament is marketed as if it's a spin-off of the Europa League, i.e. the 2nd tier. If that's the case - why they didn't just expand the Europa League to 64 teams anyway. But then again there wouldn't have been a place for the 8 3rd placed teams in the Champions League

  • @danielmurphy8262

    From what I have seen, it appears to be only fans from England who are looking down on the Europa Conference League, with a fair amount of that involving mocking Tottenham for their place in it. Granted, I dont often engage with fans from the other major European leagues, but overall it does appear that even the semi-large leagues and teams of Europe are taking it seriously and giving it the respect it deserves.
