    4:48 the most brilliant tool I have ever seen, I wish I had one of these back in the 80's it would have saved a lot of labor and a lot of wasted metal.

    how are those base plates race legal and safe??

  • @aussietruckphotosandmodels8510
    @aussietruckphotosandmodels85103 жыл бұрын

    That wouldn't get past tech inspection here. You can't have any holes in the base plate, and the base plates aren't even contoured to the floor. If you want to build a proper roll cage don't look at this.

    I just want to point out to anyone who is going to embark on building their own roll cage that the base plates or mounting plates that the tubes get welded to can not be drilled so the tube passes through them. The plates have to be solid, otherwise, in the case of a roll over the weight of the car would all then be being supported by the welds holding the tube from being pushed through those holes. The mounting plates need to be solid (no holes cut where the tubes get welded). Just wanted to share that with you guys.

    Yeah, I didn't get that either. Looks like you'd just move the plates to drop the cage down through the holes to weld the top, then slide the solid plates back under, then weld those.

    I think he just did that to set the rollcage height as the holes seemed to big for a solid weld

    @James I don’t know about that James. I build cages and am a technical inspector for the SCCBC, our governing body is the FIA and I’ve never seen this method in any of the rule books....not to say I know everything, I’ve just never seen this way of doing things. I will say that for some reason, some rules in Europe are somewhat different then here in Canada but this one would impede the safety of the driver.

    I think its possible he is welding them properly to the frame rails of the car that run underneath the floor. its likely that even if he welded it on plates to the floor, the floor itself would rip.
