Food Storage: The Top 10 Foods We Don't Want to Have to Live Without
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
The foods you keep in your prepper pantry should be unique to your needs and preferences. Sometimes we tend to make this more complicated than it needs to be. Store the shelf-stable foods that you eat on a regular basis. Because you eat these foods every day, nothing needs to go to waste.
In this video, we get a bit personal and share with you the top 10 foods that we just wouldn't want to have to live without. Jonathan and I have different preferences and nutritional requirements. We take that into consideration when we are stocking up.

Rice, beans, oats, spices/condiments, canned/dried veggies, shelf-stable tofu, dried soy protein chunks like tvp and soy curls, canned/dried fruit, flour, coffee. That said, my spice/condiment category is extremely broad and includes everything from cooking spices from multiple cultures to baking soda to cocoa powder to pickled jalapenos and more. If it lets you turn plain ingredients into something completely different, it goes in this category. Something I've recently tried is dried wakame. It rehydrates thoroughly very quickly, and makes a lovely fresh salad. Shelf life is as long as you can keep moisture out of it. I have enthusiastically added this to my storage!

I'm testing it. I haven't been to a grocery store since May, and let me tell you everyone... it's not easy. I thought I could do this because I prepared, but it just wasn't enough for just me and my dog. Seriously, we don't realize how much we eat and how much it takes to prepare food. I even turned off my gas just to see if I could get along without it. Nope! My water heater is gas, and my dryer. You can't make changes once the country declares food shortages. The fact is we're all in trouble if we believe it's so easy. 😐

When I first started using coconut oil, it didn't have a BB date on it. About 10 years ago, I ordered a bunch of 1/2 gal containers because I found a good sale. I still had a few in my storage. By the time I used all of them up they were 5 years past the BB date, but they still tasted good. That is one of the reasons that coconut oil is one of my favorite oils to store.

As far as adding vegetable or bean to a dish... Dried vegetables can be powdered and added to almost anything (Like bean flour) If you dont have a grinder for beans...soak the beans, cook if possible, and mash them. Add them into your bread mix and knead/fold in thoroughly. You won't always be able to get as MUCH into the bread, but you do get some.
Kylene, the foods you have mentioned over and over that you NEED (such as chocolate!) are all high in Magnesium. I think if you up your mag supplementation, you may curb those cravings. Keep in mind that there are many types of Mag, and you may need to find the one that works best for you!

Thank you for your video. I phoned the Grain Elevator and whole wheat is cheaper than it was last year. I don't get it. Anyway, $355 a ton compared to $400 last year. I want a half ton Wheat and maybe 500 lb of whole Oats. I'm going to get it while the getting is good. I vacuumed packed 4 kg Rolled Oats this morning just because I could. I love your selection. I'm all about the drugs, ... as in Coffee and Tea for me. The Tea is for the old folks I like to say, but! I know I'd be drinking it so fast if there was no coffee to be had. That's why I buy lots and vacuum pack it with Oxygen Absorbers. It's going to be hard on the old folks when we're down to the Pasta, Rice, and Beans. So I've canned and dehydrated a lot of Potatoes as well as Carrots, Turnips, Squash, but I'm spoiled. I can buy a dehydrated Seven Veggie Melody from the Bulk Barn and it's just too easy. Again, packed into mason jars with absorbers. I started dehydrating Peas as filler in the jars of Potato slices and it paid off too. I can fit two cups of dried peas in a full quart jar of Potato slices. The Bulk Barn also carries bulk powdered Mac and Cheese sauce mix (made with real cheese) and I get all kinds of that stuff for all the pastas I have. It gets packed into mason jars with the oxygen absorber of course. I have all kinds of Pasta sauces and there's always the cans of Cream of Assorted Soups that go into anything and everything. I've decided we need more powdered Skim Milk so that next on the list. I think I'd prefer too much powdered Milk than too little and I do believe I have too little. I bought more peanut butter today too and it wasn't cheap. $10 for 2kg, (4.4 lb) Now I'm big on the old timey dried fruits like Dates, Raisins, Prunes, Maraschino Cherries, so I vacuum pack them away too except the Cherries, they're in bottles. AND! I keep packing the Flour away, 10kg in a five gallon Mylar bag and bucket with 2500cc Oxygen Absorber. Oh, I found a recipe for Banana Jam using Pineapple, lemon juice, and high content sugar and it's some good with peanut butter! Good luck.

Thanks for the tip on storing chocolate!
Have you tried sprouting the wheat then dehydrating before grinding it? Sprouting helps breakdown some of the "anti-nutrients" that make wheat hard to digest. (Sourdough fermentation has s similar function.) I agree with your top 7, my last three would be coffee/tea (I could eventually live without them but quitting caffeine cold turkey would not be a pleasant experience for myself or anyone around me lol), rice (especially short grain rice) and meats, mostly home-canned chicken or beef.
Omgosh I really love you both! I’m new here and so happy to be here! 🥰

QOTD mine are very similar to y'alls with a few exceptions. 1. Wheat, I store some but I'm not a huge bread eater. I used to be but as a long term single individual, I have found that I simply can't get through an entire loaf of bread before it goes bad. I have some wheat stored for sprouting, and I suppose I could grind it for making baked goods. Major exception being pumpernickel. I can eat an entire loaf of that in one sitting lol. 2. for potatoes, I also store the dehydrated hashbrowns. I use both the potato flakes and the hashbrowns in my daily cooking (It's my primary source of carbs). the hashbrowns I get at sams and repackage. The flakes I get from the HSC and even though I rotate through them quickly I have found that they are better quality than the ones from the store. 3. for beans I store the above varieties, but also I store red lentils, black lentils, and chickpeas (I get them from the indian and middle eastern markets, small benefit of being an urban prepper lol). A lot of the emotional attachment to foods is actually cultural. Having homemade hummus to me is one of those comfort foods, and there's a similar dip I make with red lentils. Falaffal is another comfort food for me, so the chickpeas some in handy there as well. Plus lentils don't require as much advanced planning. You can literally go from dry to fully cooked in like 15 minutes with red lentlis. 4. meats I don't eat them so I don't store them. I do store the freeze dried eggs. 5. dairy is a tough one for me. I used to store a lot of it but as I have gotten older have found that my system can't handle it very much anymore. I'm in the process of regifting the diary in my storage.

Instead of parmesan cheese, you can use nutritional yeast flakes to add a similar flavor to sauces or cooked dishes. It provides some B vitamins and is dairy-free for anyone who might be sensitive to dairy-based cheeses. 😁
Just made an order from the LDS cannery.
What foods would I really miss if I had to go without a trip to the supermarket for a year or longer? I would really, really miss fresh green salads. Yes, I can sprout wheat, I have freeze-dried veggies in my food storage and I have some outdoor container gardens, but most of the year it is just too hot here in the Mojave Desert for enough time to grow lettuce, cabbage, celery and cucumbers. I can grow kale, but kale salads topped with wheat shoots are not quite the same as salads made from different types of leaf lettuce and shredded cabbage. I do have freeze-dried broccoli and raisins in my food storage so I could probably make a version of Joan's broccoli salad and use stevia in place of the sugar in the sweet dressing. I also love low-carb Keto ice cream bars and there is no food storage alternative for such a treat. I would just have to settle for making a milk shake type beverage of powdered non-fat milk, slushy ice, stevia and some kind of low-carb flavored syrup. On the upside, I do have freeze-dried avocadoes, onions, and diced tomatoes, dried cilantro and masa flour, so I could make my own salsa, guacamole, corn tortillas and corn chips. And with the addition of my stored rice, dried beans, tomato powder, ground beef, pepper jack cheese, dehydrated pickles jalapeño slices and dehydrated hominy, there are a lot of Mexican style dishes I can make. If I have to live without green salads and Keto ice cream bars, I can do so, especially if I can still have my favorite spicy Mexican dishes.

you should do what i do - when it's easter time, really ***REALLY*** hide your eggs filled with chocolate well...that way, you totally forget where they are...so when you find a random egg in September while you're cleaning or organizing or whatever, you're surprised with a chocolate filled egg 🤣🤣🤣 My Top 10 List is 1) dairy - milk especially, cheese especially, butter especially, cream cheese, eggs, yogurt, almond milk, coconut milk 2) meat - beef, chicken, pork, fish 3) frozen/canned/fresh/dried fruit and vegetables - I love the pepper and onion blends, the stir fry blends, the broccoli blends, frozen berries, canned potatoes are great in soups and stews 4) baking goods - white flour - I don't really care for whole wheat flour, so AP flour, salt, sugars, baking powder and soda, cocoa powder - there's so much you can make with those things 5) spices & condiments- all of them but especially salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, Lawry's Seasoned Salt, cumin, coriander, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, A-1, bouillion powders, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, mustard powder, honey mustard, ketchup, mayo, teriyaki sauce 6) Nuts & Seeds - peanut butter, sunflower seeds, pecans, walnuts, peanuts 7) Pasta - all shapes/styles 8) Chips and Crackers - crunchy & salty things are my guilty pleasure 9) Frozen food my son will eat - my kiddo has sensory issues and really loves store bought chicken nuggets & mini frozen pizzas 10) Sweets - I'd have a stash of all our favorite candies and cookies (I'm a sucker for the Keebler Fudge cookies lol)

Hi Provident preppers, great video! Wondered 3 things: 1. Coconut oil how long has it lasted you so far in years? 2. Gee, do you use it and how long does it last? 3. Freeze dried eggs how long would you say do they last for?
Bread is a must but trust me, no one wants to around me if I have to go thru the apocalypse without chocolate. A luxury item that I cling to, too much is Diet Coke.
I am sitting here laughing because I make homemade yogurt often, and I've told people many times that the best tasting yogurt by far is made from the powdered milk that is at least 10 years old. I also agree with storing the cocoa powder, I bought several types in bulk as one of my first storage items many many years ago :) Life would surely be difficult without chocolate, no joke ;)
When I reach a point when " I need a shot of whiskey " ( I have never used any acholic beverages) a good tablespoon of chocolate syrup is my go to,
One of the things I worry about is being able to get fresh vegetables in a long term situation. Yes, I have a plot in the community garden that has produced an amazing amount of produce that we used in meal making at home. However, my friends & I (local & online) have a January challenge to grow something indoors: a jar of bean sprouts or broccoli sprouts or radish sprouts or green onions from kitchen scraps or celery or whatever. My first attempt at green onions from the scrap end with roots was a total failure (probably because I use more of the bulb than anyone else in group since green onions have the lowest amount of sugar in them than any other onion). So I’ll have to try some more next week. Meanwhile, I’m moving on to monk bean sprouts & broccoli bean sprouts in some jars with screens on top to drain. If this works out, how would you suggest storing seeds for sprouting? In mason jars in a dark place?

Kiss her and walk away! LOL!! A very smart man there!
Kyleen (sp?) I am like you with regards to wheat. I was told I was non-celiac gluten sensitive but my youngest son is a pastry chef and he uses only organic “non enriched” flour and leavened with either aluminum-free baking powder or sourdough starter. And what do you know? He was right. I still limit how much I indulge, but it was a breakthrough.
I’ve used garbanzo bean flour, purchased already ground. I’m curious about your comment about an impact grinder. I couldn’t find information on Google. Can you provide a link to an impact grinder so I can compare versus a grain mill?
Also, thank you so much for your comment about lack of salt and low blood sugar. Today I spoke the word, that God will provide me the answer to a health issue, I was made aware of today. This is not the first time God has answered me through a KZread video. Meharbaani Waheguru ji

Do roasted nuts like almonds go bad as quickly as raw? I think you said 3-5 years. I've been making tamari flavored almonds in the oven (about 4 coatings). Delish! I never thought of vacuum sealing them before.
you can can butter, I did. Supposed to be shelf stable for 5 years
Can you share with us your recipe for homemade yogurt? Love your videos!
I bought chocolate Christmas candy on sale and just plopped it in the freezer. I'll go back and put it in plastic bags later. Some chocolates were in bags already, and others were wrapped in foil and cellophane.
Waters (different kinds),Coffee, chocolate, bread, meats, spinach or kale, veggies, fruits ( peaches, apples, oranges, watermelon,) Eggs from supermarket: can you store them outside of fridge? Butter, milk, potatoes Freeze dried Our home in Florida is so very hot, so storage of food & its shelf life, per foid is critical. Getting ready to Tent home, so Iwill be leaving the canned goods behind. What do you think?
Chocolate is the other vitamin C. It is medicinal... for mental health and calm. ))
I love a folded pb&j everyday too!!!
Do you know if yogurt starter powder is freeze dried and therefore shelf stable? We live very remotely in Australia. 3 hrs one way from the store. We need to be able to have everything we need for a long time. Making yogurt from yogurt only works a few times. Love your videos! Thanks
Freeze dried eggs went from $64 to $96/can overnight on 1/18/23. Augason Farms, 72 serving can, on Amazon. That's $1.33 per 2.5 Tbsp serving (roughly one egg). Eggs would have to get to $16 a dozen before break even.
Greetings from Tennessee. Don't know if you've heard about this, but there is an "heirloom" wheat that is commonly grown in the middle east that because of it not being genetically modified can be eaten by folks with gluten problems such as Celiac Disease. Yea, there's no way to get any quantity at a reasonable price, but I thought you might find that interesting. God bless and I hope y'all have a wonderful New Year.

What is Kamut? Sounds like a Yankee trying to speak German!😂🤣😂
You have to be careful with milk chocolate, I’ve had that go rancid after about a year
Green beans canned from the garden Fermented with dill and garlic Mature green beans can be dried, shelled, stored dry or canned. I put 1/4 of jar beans, fill with water, salt or flavorings, or a little cured ham and pressure can for one hour. Super good as soup base, heated to eat as is or or with dumplings.
Try sliced apples with peanut butter. mmmm good.
