I really appreciate the walk-throughs of your food forest; it's always inspirational. I'm trying to convert an old orchard into a food forest right now, but it's sloooow going! Most trees are severely damaged and diseased, so they take a lot of maintenance from me just to keep them limping along (and I usually have zero time for it). But we'll get there! I'm glad you mentioned that "wild" trees don't bear as much - that's also a blessing, if you're just one person! Had a bumper crop last year I absolutely couldn't keep up with, so that's another important factor for folks to consider.

I feel ya. My Dad's old orchard hasn't been pruned or taken care of at all for 25-30 years. Most trees aren't producing anymore, the grapevines took over pulling down a Gravenstine Apple tree and a Bartlett Pear tree. My son (13 y.o.) and I got back from Mother's Nature and area and planted a Grocery Row Garden in the style of David The Good. Then I had a diabetic problem and had an amputation, so now I'm really behind on the work. I need to get my deer fence up still to protect my young trees. But little by little I will get there. Just like you will get there. Good luck!

This is why I grow black Raspberry and Roses around the perimeter of my yard.

I’ve been slowly splitting and replanting the comfrey I purchased from you 2-3 years ago. I have comfrey just about everywhere and have already shared it with family and neighbors. The bumble bee population was almost non existent 3 years ago. Now their numbers are exploding all over the yard. It’s such a great food source in the food forest.

I find pest management is easier in a food forest with the help of the birds. And other predator insects. It's great to see the ease of care with food forest

I'm working towards having a food forest that ultimately requires little to no intervention on my part. I have a lot of work to do to get there. Money is limited and time is a little more abundant but not as plentiful as I would like. I'm slowly getting everything established and planted.

I love how you always look at things from a prepper/tactical standpoint. As a Marine Veteran I also look at things in that manner. We moved to our 3.5+ acres in Southeast Tennessee about a year and a half ago and we haven’t really started our homestead yet but I am trying to acquire the tools and resources to start it. My plan now is to give my yard a bunch more privacy from the two roads that can see my house and yard. I’ll use some green giants and weeping willows and then begin fencing in my pasture which is roughly 1.25 acre. My goal is to get a miniature Jersey dairy cow and possible a few sheep. ~4/5. I figure we can split it into three 0.4 acre sections and rotate them. If I can only get the cow that’s fine. If I can only get the sheep that’s fine. But I also have a 0.75 acre field of grasses that gets all day sunlight. It would be perfect for a high tunnel and orchard/food forest. Being as I am a former NYer I am saving my 0.25 acre front yard for aesthetics. I’ll grow some flowers and grass and hydrangeas etc. Then I have another 0.7 acre where I want to build an outdoor area for my family to hang out in and relax and that’s right next to my stream or as they say down here my crik. My soil is very compacted and nothing but clay a couple/few inches down so my plan is to put a sign up saying “dump your wood chips here, text (my number) for time/date”. My goal for right now is to get a nice little compact 4wd tractor with a loader and backhoe/excavator. That way I can actually keep the yard going so I don’t have to try moving stuff around with a wheel barrow. I recently got a zero turn cub cadet mower which is awesome. My yard faces south and is pretty long and it’s essentially the perfect layout for a food forest. I even have a nice hill behind the house that I can tier so everything gets sun from morning until evening. I also love your antigovernment tilt because that’s how I am. Most people that have served in our military have a growing distrust of our government. Probably the nonstop lies we were told throughout our enlistment am I right? Sorry for rambling but I am super motivated by your channel. You have a great personality that makes me watch 2-5 videos at a time, and although I spend a lot of time working and hanging with the kids I very much want to get my land in order and we find it very pleasing to go out and pick a basket of mulberries so I’m sure once we have a food forest my kids will be very motivated to keep it going, hopefully. But I figure I’m turning 42 this summer and my wife is in her late thirties so we have a few decades to work on everything. I would like to grow enough to survive off the land if I really needed to. Wish me luck.

I'm going to put a death hedge around my property, eventually. I learned a lot of different hedges with big huge spikes & poisonous thorns from David The Good. That combined with a high-powered electric fence on the inside of the hedge line. Booby traps & such. The power running through the fence can be quickly adjusted down in case the powers that shouldn't be ask questions. Then you can have some cane to keep the other animals from the high-powered electric fence. Then you can have your animals electric fence. I've been thinking about this for years.

Love this video... look forward to the next tour in full production. DH and I are in yuppie suburbia and have built a homestead on our 1/3acre lot...fortunately no homeowners assoc.... And the food forest is perfect for us. We have fruit trees and berries and all sorts of veggies even in the front yard. And neighbors have no idea what's growing behind the rose fence. Food forests, and absolutely orchards, are fantastic, even in yuppie suburbia.

You should see if the apple breeder on KZread by the name of SkillCult is someone you are able to visit the way you visited Stefan, he has bred a decent amount of awesome apples that I recently grafted onto some trees, and I think it would be awesome to see you bring some of that variety to your food forest.

Another great video you too. My time allows me to grow weeds (foxtail, chickweeds) lol We did get 2 fruit tree's planted, 3 more to go. Plus anymore we pick up. My strawberries are making a come back (transplant & temp shock from being in a hoop house, on top of freezing temps the next day being snowed on. Lol) blackberries are making a come back (some) after being rudely dug up. Blueberry from last yr is still hanging on but not thriving, just existing. But you give me more idea's each time, much to my husband's dislike. 😅

You have Chinese Silver Grass problems, i have Quackgrass, Canadian Thistle, and Teasel! So if I'm understanding you, if i put cardboard down n add wood chips probably 3-5 inces thick is the beginning of these invasive weeds they will die out or move out of my garden! Will having Comfrey help and nitrogen fixing trees or plants being grown throughout my garden and having other nitrogen fixers in my garden! I'm hoping you can help me!

I'm in South East Alabama we moved in and they have a peach tree. Last year it seemed to drop most of its fruit even when watering. We mulched it this year and pruned it a little it's doing better but still dropping quite a few peaches, any tips, I don't know the variety they are smaller peaches

Is your definition between the two styles simply the amount of maintenance you do? It seems your “orchard” also has a variety of food and herbs. Which is how I have defined “food forest”. Or is there some other difference?

I think it comes down to both maintenance and yield.

It sure would be nice if there was a list of nitrogen fixers......In the books it talks about putting nitrogen fixers everywhere......ok........nobody seems to provide a perennial list......so far, from your videos, I got black locust, beans, mimosa, clover. That is pretty much all I have been able find.

Yes, the book, Gaia’s Garden, has extensive lists of nitrogen fixers fro all different climates and growing zones.

What state and climate zone are you guys in? We're selling our modest home in South FL, and I'm trying to get into silvopasture in Tennessee.

We started with a food forest but are planning a permaculture orchard based on Stefan Sobkowiak's plan on a different property! We just ordered our first rice knife from you! I have been wanting one for a while now, super excited about that!!
