Food Forest Saunter - April 2022

Madeleine takes us on a walk through our food forest garden here in northern California in early April 2022. We planted the first fruit trees and berry bushes and other perennials starting in 2013, and have been continuing to plant more trees and other plants and build the soil and create raised beds and over the past 9 years. Still somewhat young for a food forest, but coming along, and hope we can provide some helpful perspectives and inspiration with this short video.
We have never used any pesticides or chemical fertilizers, or any bone meal, blood meal, fish meal, or animal manure to build the soil, so everything is grown both organically and also veganically. Every year at least one new layer of wood chips, as well as compost and compost tea: this has worked well in building the soil and increasing fertility. We also use glacial mineral dust to remineralize the soil as well as Effective Microorganisms to increase soil health, and other organic vegan amendments and lots of TLC. Thanks for watching!
Musical accompaniment is an original piece of piano music composed and performed by Dr. Will Tuttle (many albums of uplifting piano music are available through iTunes and all online distributors).

As amazing and loving as Madeleine’s discussion and this feast-for-our eyes, it is further elevated by Will’s piano accompaniment. Bravo to this dream team!

Dr. Tuttle and Madeleine, It was so great to take this virtual tour of your food forest- which I just stumbled upon. I don't know if you remember Alli and me (David), but you've been to our home in Tucson, AZ a couple of times when here for lectures and such. Alli led our local Vegan Spirituality chapter for a number of years. In any event, we have recently planted out phase one of our food forest and we are so excited with anticipation to watch it fill in and provide a wonderful bounty for us, the pollinators and other visitors. Please let us know if/ when you will be passing our way again. Love and peace to you both.

Thanks Madeleine for the tips on borage and its use like attracting the bees and the compost tea. I used to make at my son's high school a green smoothie with borage leaves, kiwi, banana and a little bit of orange juice. Delicious!
