Food banks: 'I go without food so my son can eat'

More than a third of children in London are currently living in poverty, according to a recent report by the Childhood Trust.
A quarter of the children it surveyed are also not expecting to receive a present under the tree this Christmas.
Many families are relying on food banks to feed their families.
One mother explains how she goes without food so that her son can eat.

I think ppl understand this wrong. I think what they mean is that money s not nessesary gonna make you happy. Rich ppl also sometimes commit suicide because of depression etc. They dont say that being poor will make you happy, because it s pretty obv it wont when you are hungry all the time

At least there are foodbanks these days. When my children were small, we went through a period from September to January where my wages did not come through. We collected the wilting vegetables from the tray outside the greengrocers at the end of the day, scavenged for hazel nuts, blackberries and other free growing fruits in the woods and fields, grew what we could in the back garden. The child benefit gave us a little money for limited electricity, and whatever was over bought mostly flour, eggs , and dried pulses.

Nope that is simply not true. The population of Europe 100 years ago was far smaller than it is now. IE near 750 Million now compared to 300 million in 1900 and less than 150 million in 1800. Most of the European wars were fought over two factors, dynastic control (EG the 100 years war) and in the case of Napoleon the belif that France was superior and therefore deserved to rule the world (Survival of the fittest from Darwinism). The rest were purely over control of spice routes and silk routes.

I wonder what she is doing with her £77 a week JSA/IS/UC benefit plus £20 Child benefit plus other child benefits? She also gets housing benefit and council tax reduction benefits I assume? Gas isn't all that expensive. I carried out a little experiment yesterday, I left my heating on at 20 degrees for 24 hours and used up 24kwh of gas which at 9p each plus 27p standing charge cost me £2.46 I was blooming freezing though. That is £17.22 a week or £447.72 for the coldest 6 months of the year(October to March). Do what I am going to do and put extra credit on the gas meter over the summer months. Even if you use £5 per day in gas that will cost you about £900 or so which building up a credit at £200 a month is doable between now and September. Go without now so you don't have to later.

Food banks are a blessing in disguise. As long as we have food banks then the Government of the day will not do anything. That's the trouble with food banks, the Government have passed the buck onto the ordinary poor citizens. I give to the food banks. It is very sad, when one looks at the money spent on the pandemic, if the news is reliable, many millions has been wasted, despite government mandate good intentions. One hopes that soon, the situation will be resolved, whereby people don’t have to rely on food banks. The present laws, sadly are failing these vulnerable people. In 2022 everyone on the planet, should have clothing, shelter, food and a environment that is caring, sharing, loving. Hopefully things will improve for everyone soon.

I just watched a documentary about this..my jaw dropped open...I couldn't believe that just 1 Apple farmer has to throw away up to 7 tons of apples every week because stores won't buy them because they are not perfectly round.!! The couple who did the documentary went to several restaurants and stores and received so much food...they themselves almost had to throw food out..!! It should be obligatory for all food selling chains not to destroy food but to automatically donate it to food banks in each country. Like George Carlin said (slightly paraphrased) “Now, there's one thing you might have noticed I don't complain about: politicians. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don't fall out of the sky. They don't pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from British parents and British families, British homes, British schools, British churches, British businesses, and British universities, and they are elected by British citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It's what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're going to get selfish, ignorant leaders. Term limits ain't going to do any good; you're just going to end up with a brand new bunch of selfish, ignorant sods. So, maybe, maybe, maybe, it's not the politicians who suck. Maybe something else sucks around here... like, the public. Yeah, the public sucks."

Unfortunately not many are willing to consider the bigger picture or look at the true root causes for these issues. We live in a system that promotes selfishness and competition then wonder where such huge inequality comes from. Monetary funds claim success when they say they've saved a million less people from starving to death this year without bothering to mention it was the system which they so happily reaped the benefits of that put those people in that desperate situation. Other systems exist if people are ever ready to learn.

Get real: if a person truly is hungry, self esteem is the least of her worries. Indeed, the poverty problems do need to be fixed, but in the meanwhile, I have enough sense to know that luxuries have to go in order to survive. Maybe you've never been truly hungry and didn't know how you were going to feed yourself. That's not a good place to be. Not going hungry trumps self esteem everytime.

However, I wear mascara in an obsessive way, as my eyelashes are literally invisible without it! However, if I had to choose between basic makeup, and food, the food would win every time! People in the west don't know we are born. Look at places like the Philippines, where they literally have a cup of rice to share between two children for lunch. There are loads of places where they only eat once, or twice a day. I'm not suggesting she does that, but since she doesn't have a baby/toddler (so no nappies, formula, or wipes to buy) she could totally feed them both on a shoestring. A coupl of slices of toast and some milk is a normal breakfast isn't it? So if any child is going to bed hungry it's a matter for social services.
