Fontella Bass - Rescue Me / Night Music with David Sanborn & Jools Holland
Музыка
The awesome Fontella Bass (RIP) singing her number one Hit of all time: Rescue Me. In a wonderful soulful performance which was aired on the too good for TV show Night Music.
I decided to upload this clip to KZread because the one that is uploaded has very poor quality.
Taken from Night Music #116.
Fontella Bass (vocals), Tom Barney (bass), Hiram Bullock (guitar), Omar Hakim (drums), Philippe Saisse (keyboards), Lani Groves (backup vocals), David Sanborn (alto sax) and guest George Duke (keyboards). #NightMusic #SundayNight

I think Fontella did not get the recognition she deserved. Get performance!
Can't believe how strong and powerful her voice still is.
There are not a lot of singers who can crank it up for a live performance and exceed their studio version. Fontella is one of those. This is terrific. She hadn't lost a note.

Yep, first few seconds I thought wow this is better than when she originally did it...great voice.
Come on Folks this woman is tremendous.well underrated,As good as anyone with a gospel soul voice,Give this lady a BIG Hand
She's done this song...hundreds, maybe even a thousand times now, and this sounds like she's doing it for the first time! Incredible energy and voice...better than the studio hit!
She just has no business being able to deliver that song with that voice at her age !! At the risk of using that overused word ...Awesome !

@@jillsalkin7389 It is a well know fact that aging brings changes to the vocal chords. The result is often marked changes to the voice. This often means older singers often do find it impossible to deliver the song the way they used to. Some singers seem to be rare exceptions and my comment was simply highlighting that Fontella Bass is definitely one of them. For examples of those who are not exceptions do make the mistake of tuning into Jools Hollands Hootenanny show that seems to specialise in performers who have passed their sell by date as singers.

Dude on Bass was funky AF that night
Fond memories of this song so many years ago. Man, she’s still awesome… and so beautiful!

Fontella was a fantastic singer
2020 This is a real singer that never got the praise she deserved. Her voice is so high and sweet. She is a much better singer than many female artists from the 60's and her vocals blow Diana Ross away.
@ZOSO900

Totally agreed, but not really a fair comparison. Florence Ballard's voice blew Diana's away. Diana was just pushed to the front because they thought she would appeal to white audiences more and was different from all the gospel and soul singers.

@@ZOSO900 I was born 1960. Grew up on the Northside of Chicago. Don't get me wrong as a kid, I loved Diana Ross but what about Jean Terrel..Up the ladder to the roof song? I still love her vocals as well. She also was put on the wayside of Diana Ross. I am going to listen to.. Up the Ladder to the roof right now. It is such a beautiful song and makes me feel happy.

She is one of the greatest female singers of all time!
If you want passion you've come to the right place!
This is just great soul, she had a voice that for me put her in the same class as Aretha and Martha Reeves, but she never seemed to get the recognition and acclaim she deserved.

Fontella Bass did her thang!!!! Band was kicking as well. George Duke on keys background vocals. Yep, well done...Always have loved this song.
How many times must she have sung this song over the years? And yet here she gives 100 percent -- actually more, since her performance here is better than the record. Even the "um"'s are great!

Some people are just born to perform! They make it look so easy and it probably is to them.
She was great, and the song is really one of the best soul-classics out there.. this t.v. band tore it up- really terrific.
Sing the song Fontella Bass sang the song sounds good to me
One of my top ten best singles ever and I'm very old 😂😵💫
Wow. She was as great as ever in her 60s, unlike so many aging R&B singers of the era (and I saw a lot of them live). She actually co-wrote this song. Such a shame that she didn't get more quality material and contracts in her career.
💪💪💪💪💪👌👌👌👌 very very nice fontella ❤
I'm never tired of hearing this classic song. Most songs today I am tired of them the first moment I hear them.

I played bari and tenor sax with the Oliver Sain Revue and Oliver Sain's R&B All Stars in the 1980's and our shows always featured Fontella Bass and the Ikettes who backed up Ike and Tina Turner and Bobby McClure who sang with Fontella on "Don't you mess up a good thing." The name I don't see mentioned here is Oliver Sain, who produced the original recording, was a prolific writer, producer and concert promoter. He discovered Fontella Bass when she was a teenager and mentored her rise from local St. Louis keyboard player to producing this song for her on Chess Records. She remained in St. Louis and was a great talent and one the sweetest ladies I've had the good fortune to work with. RIP. Dave Sanborn is from STL and I worked with him on several advertising tracks for Budweiser, etc. He has paid props to Oliver Sain many times over the years. THIS SONG BRINGS BACK SO MANY WONDERFUL MEMORIES OF ME GROWING UP IN THE 50'S AND LISTENING TO SO MANY INCREDIBLY GREAT SINGERS SUCH AS FONTELLA BASS. IF I COULD ONLY GO BACK IN TIME AND RELIVE THAT WONDERFUL ERA WHEN MUSIC HAD SOUL AND DEEP FEELINGS. REST IN PEACE FONTELLA, FOR YOU ARE TRULY MISSED BY MY GENERATION.
Fontella Bass Birth: Jul. 3, 1940 Saint Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA Death: Dec. 27, 2012 Saint Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA Rhythm and Blues and Soul Singer. Known for her 1965 hit record "Rescue Me". Fontella was the daughter of gospel singer Martha Bass of the Clara Ward Singers. Born and raised in St. Louis, she quickly showed herself to have impressive musical talent. She played the piano in church at 5 and was singing by the following year. She graduated from Soldan High School in 1958 and later that year was singing professionally at the famed Showboat Blues Club. By 1965 she recorded 2 soul singles with Bobby McClure, "Don't Mess Up a Good Thing" and "You'll Miss Me (When I'm Gone)". Later that same year, signed to Chess Records, she recorded "Rescue Me", which became a huge hit. It reached #4 on the pop charts and #1 on the R & B charts, and earned Chess Records the first gold record in 10 years. The song is forever linked to Fontella and has become an iconic song heard in numerous motion pictures. She had several hits over the next 2 years, "Recovery", I Can't Rest", "I Surrender", "You'll Never Ever Know", "Safe and Sound", "Lucky in Love" and "Sweet Lovin' Daddy", but she never again struck gold as she did with "Rescue Me". Her younger brother David Peaston was also a successful soul singer. Bass retired from music to concentrate on raising her 4 children with her husband Lester Bowie. She was honored on the St. Louis Walk of Fame in 2000, but in 2005 she suffered a series of strokes and finally passed away at a hospice in St. Louis in 2012. She was known as the "Queen of St. Louis Soul". A large musical celebration and memorial service took place on Friday, January 4, 2013 at Shalom Church in Florissant, Missouri. Burial: Cremated, Ashes given to family or friend.

JohnWinchester3567 Hi John, yes "David" was a successful singer for a while...Although he didn't get a lot of credit for his work in the music business he still was a great singer....He won all his auditions at the "Apollo" and went on to make some good music....David, and his family was once a gospel group........
