    It's weird - us western musicians get so hung up on harmony when really rhythm is what seems to open the musical universe. At least for me these days. Thanks so much for the reminding me of how much space there is to be explored.

    @@Tuldanwattana666 No need to apologize, Tul. Your English is WAY better than my Thai. 😅 The subdivisions are exactly the same. The difference is in the style of music. The shuffle refers to a drum groove where the swung 8th note subdivision is played on the snare drum. The shuffle feel is usually associate with Blues music. If someone says they want a 16th shuffle, they're probably referring to the drum groove of the song. Does this make sense?

    I´m glad I found this here. Playing Bass with different Groups in different styles there is always one Problem. wether it is old time Rock music ore Funk my fellow musicians having a bad time in swinging. Some can't even hear the difference between straight and swing. If you don't feel it you have to explain it, but how you gonna explain a certain feeling? Maybe some Players feel loose in placing the "e" and "a" in the right way. I found out, that the hardest groove to play for most of the Bands over here in Germany is the "Gogo Beat" the requirers a special kind of "swingability" .

    Rich this is a good exercise it’s a lot harder than it looks. The bass note comes just slightly before the beat on the metronome it’s difficult to do consistently, good challenge. If you were playing that groove in a band would the drummer also hit the ‘a’ or play it straight?

  • @richbrownbass

    @richbrownbass

    Thank you, Michael. I think a good drummer would play straight against this groove if they really want to emphasize the syncopation in the groove. When the drummer plays straight it puts the 'a' in context.

I learn songs much easier now but I do not play as well as I used to. I played songs exact in my youth but now I play more variation. I have to deal with distractions at home. Those 12 notes are more like colors in a continuous infinite repeating spectrum than alphabet letters . each color also resonates most with its own corresponding personality type and mood. different genres of music are like different sports with different rules. Once we know the basic rules of language we can create our own slang terms and phrases (method to our madness) The key is to make music that floats yer boat . i prefer to not get my head stuck up my ass --- thinking too analytically --- to be able to just have fun and most importantly make a brand new sound thingy that does'nt sound too 'cookie-cutter'. wing it with whatever color keys and principals (or lack thereof) float and rock yer boat ! And all the better when orthodox professionals accuse us of musical blasphemy !

    Man, I was watching your other vids and thought to myself 'id love to see him give a little Diddy on funk'. It's absolutely my favorite thing in Music, funky groovy tunes are among my favorite things in life. Not exaggerating lol, I am thinking about grooves all dang day, every day. It's the reason I sold all my guitars and started to focus only on bass lmao. I started on bass and after a few years started to play 98% guitar and bass for the rest. Now it's all bass. I tell my friends the reason is, basically, the bass is the groove maker, the reason for the feeling. It's the fuckin funk machine. I love it so much. . And goofy thing I love about bass playing is that if you are feeling the song right, nice and hard, and you play just ONENOTE in the measure....it will be great if it was the right note, feel and place lol. It's so neat. But I just can't get enough fatty bass
