White edible paint
Black edible paint
Brown edible paint
Skintone lustre dust
Navy lustre dust (for making the fondant denim jeans)

I used fondant icing to create this male/man cake topper figurine. You can use gum tragacanth in your fondant icing for a stronger consistency. For edible paint I simply use lustre dust with a tiny bit of alcohol and for edible glue I mix gum tragacanth powder with water.

Love the teenage girl topper. How do you work with the head without it going too soft and losing shape? I'm using renshaws fondant and it just goes too soft. Any tips please? Ty

Hi Melanie thank you! Have you tried mixing a little tylose powder into your fondant? It will make it firmer and help it to hold its shape, also once you make the head its a good idea to leave it to dry a little before placing it onto the body that way it wont loose shape as easy! If all else fails edible modelling paste is your best bet...holds its shape and is really firm...I hope this helps and thanks for watching! Amanda 😊

You work is so flawless and looks so effortless! It’s beautiful! I’m struggling with figures. I don’t know what it is, but I can’t model it without it sleeping into itself. Even with tylose. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong! I’ve tried standing models and they just become awful. They don’t hold shape. I’ve tried making them in pieces and then putting them together with picks and they break. It’s sad! I wonder if my expectations for what I can do are too much. I’m not sure. :( Yours always help re-motivate me. I get online and watch when I feel like giving up and try again. Thank you!

What a lovely thing to say Erica, you have no idea what that means to me! A big part of the reason I started this channel is I spent 2/3 years in exactly the same situation as you describe...spending hours on something only for it to break or sink and being so disappointed in the outcome. As soon as I worked things out I really wanted to help others work it out too. It takes so much time and practice so dont be hard on yourself! Believe me it looks so much easier because I am editing the video down it still takes me a lot of time. Have you tried modelling paste? Its firmer and a lot easier to work with than fondant especially for figures xx

Happy Bee Cakes , I’m so impressed that you worked on them for 2/3 years frustrated and didn’t give up! You can tell that you’ve worked hard to learn the craft! It’s so beautiful and was so worth the investment of time! I love your work and will continue to watch your videos for help and inspiration. So you use modeling paste? I’m wondering if the use of marshmallow fondant is my problem. Maybe I should try straight fondant for the figures mixed with tylose. Do you have a recipe for the ratio of tylose to fondant and do you use store bought fondant pre colored? I’m think that maybe that’s the route I will need to take. I currently make my own. It covers cakes nicely, but maybe it’s not meant for figures. :) I’m not going to give up. I started this journey in October so it’s very new. I was encouraged to start a business and have, but it’s all so new: Ericakes is the name. I’ll leave a link. You can see by my Spider-Man and the figure on my Tupperware cake that I struggle a bit. Haha facebook.com/ericakesLLC/ Anyway, thank you for your kind words and help. I will continue to watch for motivation. Your work is so beautiful and you present it in such a nice way that it’s easy to watch beginning to end. Best wishes!

Hi again - I just wondered what you use to make the figures dry out and become hard. The initial ones I made with Tesco fondant and are still a bit soft and squishy. I have now bought the list you sent me and when it all arrives I shall have another go. But is there anything I should add? And how long do you leave between adding things like the arms and head? Are you on FB?

  • @HappyBeeCakes

Hi Sean I add some of this tylose powder amzn.to/2t64ffU to the fondant it makes it set a lot faster and more firm. When did you make your toppers? I find Tescos fondant horrible to work with especially the black! Also if its a cake topper for a special occasion and you want it to last this edible modelling paste amzn.to/2sIbYRW is great, more expensive than fondant but worth it in the long run! Also depends on room temp too if its quite warm they take longer to dry, I would love to see how you got on! Im not on fb (yet!) though I just set up an instagram instagram.com/happybeecakes/?hl=en and twitter twitter.com/happybeecakes
