Fight depression and anxiety myself. Was in the hospital for a month 7yrs ago bc I was so suicidal. Hopefully song can help others who don't fight this nightmare understand what we're going through. I made it through...still fighting daily. Get help and know you're not alone. Some have it much worse than others. But you have purpose and a reason for being here! Hang in there! BTW drummer is Lars

Yes, but it can go both ways. It depends on individual concept of “ why am I here” meaning “why him” instead of a love one, girlfriend/boyfriends death (PC?) or best friends death, question in ones life! Look up Cliff Burton (bass) best friend of James Hatfield (Leader singer/middle guitar) tragic death. James Hatfield couldn’t cope with the tragic death of his best friend! He blamed himself took to drugs to take away his pain. He wrote these lyric right after his best friends death. It was his dark time of his life! When he said, Goodbye it’s either: I decide to change and live or just ended all enough said.................Fortunately he decided to live and he still alive so far?!?

The thing I always liked about this song is that even though the lyrics are so dark and final, the music is the opposite, like the lyrics are just the thoughts, but the music is the mind fighting against the thoughts. The music pulls you out of the depression.

My senior year of high school I had to be hospitalized for sever depression. I quit living, eating, sleeping, I just laid in bed closing my eyes tight praying that I could just fade away. This song helped me overcome my depression and kept me from ending my life as it showed me that I wasn't alone in my despair and that what I was feeling was normal and natural. It allowed me to understand the feelings that had consumed me. Metallica saved my life as that was over twenty years ago. I still suffer from depression but music is what I turn to, to keep me from stepping over the edge. The first time I attempted suicide I was six, depression is a real enemy that pushes positivity in every form away as it exacerbates the feelings of isolation and failure. You feel as though everyone's love and affection are misplaced as how could you be worthy of it. The feelings of hopelessness and helplessness are suffocating and shuts even light out as it drags you deeper and deeper into the cesspool's of your darkest thoughts. Songs like this help to pull you out of the abyss as it isn't saying that there is anything wrong in how you feel but rather that it's natural and most importantly that it's ok. It's ok to feel like there's no tomorrow for you, because after the darkness there is always dawn. My faith is and music are what keeps me going these days. My faith won't allow for the cowardess of suicide no matter how deep the depressive episode. Thanks for this reaction and please keep the reactions coming.

There’s a song on St Anger called “The Unnamed Feeling” that’s another song James wrote about depression. One line in particular that jumped out at me. “I loose myself in a crowded room, you fool, you fool, it’ll be here soon.” To me that talks about how you isolate yourself during bouts of depression. You can be at a party and everyone is having a good time and you feel completely disconnected, all alone inside of your head.

It's always helped me to remember that no matter how bad I'm feeling in a moment, there will be better days! It's really hard for loved ones who've never experienced anxiety or depression, to grasp the pain within our own mind. It took my husband 5 years of watching me have panic attacks, periods where I went through insomnia because I couldn't stop my mind from racing, & days where I couldn't leave the bed or stop crying before he finally accepted fully that none of this was something that I could talk myself out of! He did his best for me. No one can truly understand something that they haven't gone through, but you sure as hell can try! Good man, Half! Jai, I pray you start feeling better soon!

I love how Metallica write lyrics and music together as a concept. The beginning of the harmonies, after he has said goodbye, is the point of no return for this person. The pills have been swallowed or the wrists have been cut. The solo represents his life leaving his body, his life racing through his mind as he waits to die. The ferocity of the solo at the end is his pain leaving his body. Then it fades to black.....He’s now free.

I got into Metallica when I was 12 or 13 and was really drawn to this song! I was already contemplating thoughts of suicide; just leaving this earth. This song didn't draw me there but I was drawn to it because of the words and passion and so much I could relate to. As life went on, the sorrow grew worse and worse but rather than end my life, I turned to music for solace; even this song down through the years. I'm 43 years old now, never thought I'd live this long. I just got married last year and we moved to Kenya for a couple years ... FROM CHICAGO! Life is an adventure! I found Christ when I was 19 years old and really understood it all in my early 30s. Music is still a refuge for me! This song is a reminder to me that we just need to hold on, look to God! I'm gonna start a family with my beautiful wife real soon. I have a great job. I have a beautiful motorcycle. I have passions that I explore. I have so much LIFE!!! I cherish this song!!!

Hey, Jai, anxiety/panic disorder with a side of depression, here. Thanks for saying you're one of us, the isolation and feeling of being alone in suffering hurts a lot of people who have these issues.

This song might be the best and deepest insight into depression I've ever heard. It always leaves me speechless. By the way, suicide isn't cowardice, it's the last resort of a tortured human being. A human that needs to know that the world is a better place with them in it. I know that you didn't mean it Inna bad way, but it needed to be said.

I highly relate to what she said about anxiety and depression but not being suicidal. And with the positive people, sometimes we just don't want to hear that. We just want the feeling gone.

Fighting through thoughts, depression and anxiety myself. It's hard to be staring at losing everything you have worked for, for a second time. This is the type of music on my current playlist. People should be very aware of their neighbors right now. We need to look out for each other now more than ever. Enjoy your videos, keep them coming.

Love that old Metallica. It always amazed me how they could play that heavy loud power music. Then fall right into some of the most beautiful peaceful uplifting music you could hear. Its like pink Floyd goodbye blue sky. The song is about death & destruction but the music that accompanies is beautiful.

There are a ton of other songs from Metallica that I think you will like "Dyers Eve ".Is one you should check out a little back story on the song the lead singer James Hetfield's parents were Christian science believers. He had a very ruff childhood he was sheltered from others and the rest of the world his mom died of cancer because of her faith didn't believe in hospitals it's a very deep song. And one of there fastest songs. here is a link to a video with lyrics kzread.info/dash/bejne/m4WKwblue6nMqZM.html

Every time you guys are doing the salt, lemon thing while drinking, for a split second, it looks like the bathrooms of the NYC clubs back in the day. You'd walk in, and there's little crowds huddled and pouring little bumps of Bolivian marching powder on to their hands between their forefinger and thumbs, lift it to their nose, snort, repeat. Club flashbacks. Cheers.
