Folklore and War: Halyna Lukianets and Nataliia Filatova-Bilous on Preservation of Folk Songs

Folklorist Halyna Lukianets, together with the folklore band “Muravskyi Shliakh,” is working on a project titled “Folklore and War,” which focuses on the future of folklore in the occupied and frontline territories. The team aims to produce short videos about bands and folklorists who have experienced occupation and a digital archive of folklore songs in Slobozhanshchyna and Poltavshchyna.
In this video, Halyna Lukianets and her colleague Nataliia Filatova-Bilous talk about the creative process amid war, passing the traditions despite the occupation, bringing the folklore to “the hipsters” and communication with local bands, such as “Malynova Krynytsia.”
This project is supported by Documenting Ukraine, a project of the Institute for Human Sciences, IWM Vienna. Learn more about the project here: www.iwm.at/documenting-ukraine
