Well you wanted us to comment. I know it is 7 years later but I must say: This is the best video about this firebox ever. I just purchased this item and I have been watching lots of videos. I had no idea this is so versatile. And to think I can cook my favorite vegetable in it, I am thrilled Artichokes. I could have listened to you explain this all day. Makes me know I did not make a mistake. I have many stoves even the Surefire rocket stove and the smaller Scout. What a mistake they were. Thanks so much for this wonderful video.

I backpack with the stove, I use it in the winter months underneath a plow point shelter. It works great, it not only keeps me warm, but I cook on it as well. It keeps me from gathering tons of firewood also. Well worth the backpacking weight.

Awesome video. JUst came across this stove and I think I may put my Bushbuddy to sleep for a good while. The versatility and thought Steve put in to these just blows my mind.

On the Swedish Torch method, when the log is cut, turn all 4 pieces so the right angled edge is into each corner.

Thank you so much for all the information! I’ve never camped alone or started a fire before. I got a firebox. I will use the first time just for hot water for instant coffee with a small pan from home and will use dryer lint and sticks to start fire. I have access to dry pine needles also. Hope it goes ok!

I purchased one and checked a lot of the other checkboxes. A lot of stuff came in the mail. I will be field testing it soon. Great Video.

There are so many options with this stove. I love to use the state park primative camps in my teardrop trailer. This little firebox stove will keep my packing to a minimum. The fuel around the site will be enough to cook my food. Wow!Going to try the Swedish fire log method on my next trip. Thanks for the good ideas!

Man, this is one of the best demos of the Folding Firebox Stove I have ever seen (including Steve's)! I have the 1st generation Folding Firebox and love it. Steve keeps coming out with new accessories for me to buy, though. I'm going broke! Now, after seeing your video, I'm going to have to get that "Adjustable Fire Grate". Arghhhh . . .

That fire grate is the accessory I use the most (outside of the fire sticks). This is actually the gen 1. I do have a gen 2 but this was filmed a good while before the gen 2 released. Both generations are well worth the money in my opinion. Thanks again!

I read 10 Million Steps by Nimblewill Nomad years ago, found a template on his website for his Dandy Stove, and made my own version of it. It's a great DIY project for folks that hate shelling out bucks. Love the idea of the mini-Swedish fire log. Gonna have to borrow that one with credit given to Feral Woodcraft.

Awesome idea using a Swedish Fire Torch in the stove. I have a wood burning stove for backpacking and that idea never crossed my mind. That could greatly increase the burn time without having to add additional fuel. Definitely something I'm going to try next time I get out in the woods. Great video as always.

+John Curry Well I wish I could claim the idea but actually Steve the stoves designer came up with it. It does work surprisingly well. If you have the time, overload with the swedish torch. As in use a log that fits but is say 8 inches too long. the part that is sticking out of the stove will burn first and will eventually break about stove height. Once that happens, you'll have a layer of hot coals and a swedish torch going. I did that with pignut hickory and actually had 1 hour and 44 minutes of visible coals. I was sold on the idea after that. Thanks again for the support John.

I'm not really an artichoke fan myself, but I think using artichoke leaves as a soup spoon is a pretty cool idea. Thanks for the demo!

Applying the Swedish Torch fascinating. Never thought about incorporating concept into another application. Thanks for a great idea. Great HANDS ON review on the capability of the 5" stove, too. It does indeed. I have the nano now as well and the swedish method works just as well in it as it does the 5" model. Proportionally I'd say it works a bit better but that is only due to some design differences.

I love my Folding Firebox Stoves. I have the 5" and the Nano. I think I might get the Gen 2 Nano next. I was going to wait till my SSNano wore out, but you can't wear these things out. They're built uber-tough! Ok, now the artichokes brought to mind many good feasts with those. We steam them soft and serve them with lemony garlic butter to dip the tips in as we pull them off the choke. I've never tried them outdoors, but I will now, for sure. Have you ever tried the Knorr soups on hikes or out camping. There are some really good ones.

No, I haven't but I'll look into them. I'm pretty good at recreating traditional American/english/french/Italian flavors but when it comes to Japanese, I'll stick to a mix.

I have one. It has tremendous BTU output. Did a video using friction fire to start mine. The big pros being it doesn't easily clog and versatility. The con are it's heavy and those fire sticks vanish when put down. LOL keep an eye on those at all times. Nice video thumbs up.

Excellent review. Love the swedish torch firelay so much tried that one first on my Gen 2 Folding Firebox today (instead of the cross feed method) up here above the 50th parallel in Canada. You may find your wood burns better if you place the wedges of the log toward the corner, making a bigger chimney in the centre. We went out today and tested Gen 1 and Gen 2 Fireboxes in -7 to -10C weather, high humidity, snow everywhere. Loaded the Gen 1 with the typical preload method and Gen 2 had a black spruce log split into four. Birch bark was the tinder and worked great despite the wet conditions after a couple of attempts. We just warmed up cans of Stagg chili to get a feel. The preload lasted about 35 minutes and the swedish config a good hour (no added wood on either). Heated up the chili within 10 minutes. Looking forward to trying the cross feed methods and wood pellets next. You said it . . . VERSATILE! If you're a backpacker and need to go light the Firebox Nano is the one to get!

Nice review Joe. It does seem to be a very versatile stove. I still use my "Ikea-Hack" (flatwear drainer) wood stove. It takes up a lot of space. Have been considering the Firebox as a replacement, but at that weight I am leaning a bit more toward the smaller (yet lighter) Firebox Nano. I believe that one is only about 6oz.

The first few times I hiked with a Firebox I thought it was too heavy. It isn't. I switched to my alcohol stove and realized that I carry pounds of fuel with that thing too. I finally settled into carrying both but bring very little alcohol. I only use the alcohol stove on rainy mornings for making coffee. The Firebox does the rest. It's worth the pack weight, in my opinion. The Nano is a great lightweight option but requires almost constant attention as it burns the wood quickly.

You are correct about the nano going out too quick, it does need management. What I found is to feed it larger sticks from the side while feeding it small kindling from the top every now and then. You can also use a metal straw or pocket bellows to rekindle hot embers to flame shortly after it goes out to prevent you from having to go through the whole process of relighting.

Great review, seems like a good product xcept too many piece parts for cold hands in the woods with snow or on a beach with sand, those parts can be lost in a second flat and never be found. I have used what is known as a pocket cooker for years now, no piece parts and folds down. It's only bad point is a bit more weight than expected. Again, great review.

Thats what they said before eating the first oyster.

I've got something just like this. Its made of laser cut aluminum. Takes about 30 seconds to put it together. Throw in a few chunks of charcoal or some sticks light and cook. Its great for an emergency stove.

Not sure there is a make and model. My brother in law downloaded the plans from the internet and had them lazer cut. He made a bunch of them and only charged us the cost of materials. I think it was $8 or $10.

Would you say using magnesium shavings would make it too hot? Also, with pine needles on top of everything, how does it light everything underneath it?:( wouldn’t it just burn out and not catch?

I love this stove, I also have the Nano version. Both stoves you can just load up chocka with fuel and it will have no problem continuing to burn. Weight at 1.1kg I do not take my large stove out as often as I would like just due to weight. I can justify carrying it in the Australian winters as it does put off considerable heat from the metal and fire when you have it going. For just cooking the Australian bush it's too heavy to justify as you do not need the warmth.

Oh I hear you. When I take my whole family, I will take the 5" box as we are a family of 6 so I need the space and heat to cook for everyone. But if it's just 3 or so I take the Nano. Now if we're just needing to boil water for hot chocolate or mountain house, the Nano does fine for all of us too. Thanks!

To answer the question with a question, do you prefer a traditional stove or gasification stove? Comparing these two is like comparing a diesel vs gasoline engine. It all comes down to which style you prefer. Sorry to be vague there but I tend not to make comparisons between two companies when the decision is based on personal preference.

Looks like a stove that is sturdy and can load with fuel. How do you keep from lost fire sticks? I'd set them down and they would be eaten by the leaves and ground cover.

lol that seems to be a common problem. I've used this setup countless times and have never lost a firestick in the field. In my house however, I've lost them more times then I can remember. I guess my "secret" if you can call it that, is to only get them out when I use them and just put them back in the pouch immediately when done. It's nothing I've been doing on purpose, it just kind of worked it's way into a habit I suppose. THanks!

No more squirrely than a tent stake I'd imagine. Somewhere down the road we'll probably have to spring for another pair, but yeah - keep them stowed unless in use, just like your tent stakes. If they're not in the stove/ground they better be in the pouch. :)

If you are out camping you should practice being more organised. Losing small things like these firesticks is a pain in the ass and you need to order more. Losing a lighter or fire steel may cost you alot more. Hence why I practice good item management when out camping, even if the item is non crucial or inexpensive I do my best to stay organised.

What's the deal with persimmon wood? Enjoyed the video. I bought a Firebox stove a few months ago, but I have yet to use it.

+Scouting Free Yep, it is fairly large for sure. I totally dig it's long burn time though. However you are right, it is kinda of heavy for use as a personal stove when on the move. But with a group, it's perfect imo. Thanks Marc.

Gen 2 is even better. It has side feed ports on two sides near the base.

Do you prefer this or the msp core 5?

+Hellas Boy There really isn't a way for me to answer that. They both have pros and cons that out weigh each other. Honestly, it boils down to how you want to use it and personal preferences.

I'd love to have one of those but I'm poor so I just use a V8 can hobo stove with a small grill on top.

I've been using a Firebox Stove for about 10 years now. I can tell you that you really don't seem to know how to use this amazing piece of gear properly. You didn't even have it stowed correctly - the ash pan goes underneath the firesticks, which hold it all in and together while it's stowed. The firesticks are also what you use to place the plates, as the stove would be way too hot to use your fingers to spread it to get the tabs in. Also, the grill plates are for cooking food directly on. If you are cooking using the pot like you did, then you would use the firesticks to create a level, flush surface area for the pot to sit on. Lastly, if you are using it as a Swedish fire torch, you split the wood, and then place them inside with the corners facing out into each corner of the inside of the Firebox. That way, you create an incredible vortex of airflow to fuel the flame coming up through the center.

Firebox should make a larger version for a firepit

Decent review of a good stove but the grill plates are NOT designed to be used with flame as a top plate, they are designed to be used to grill once at the coals stage of the fire. Use the fire sticks as a pot stand not the grill. Just to be clear

The Bushbox XL is the German equivalent to this product, which is even more simple to set up. (There is a stainless and titanium version available). This great video shows how to convert it into a torch: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iZiLtJudmLC8qso.html. What I like is both products burn very efficiently. Not much fuel is needed and it produces flames with little smoke. Also few coals remain when it is done burning. I enjoy your channel. Thx also for including relative burn times for various fuels. =)

I already have both the Nano and the 5 inch gen 1 Firebox and have plans go in on the Titanium model kickstarter he is going to have so I just went with the pre-production model.

Dude, your video is misleading. The stove does NOT come with the cordura case, the grill grate, the extended grill plate, or the boil plate!! ALL of those are add-on purchases!!!
