The real fact is we should keep our sajdah place clean, if we keep the prayer mat open, the dust particals will stick to the prayer mat and hence the mat will be dirty and also if accidentally anyone steps with their uncleaned feet on the sajdah place of the prayer mat it would be dirty as well .to avoid this it is said to fold and keep the prayer mat. But due to lack of complete knowledge about this fact our parents used to say this that "saithan will pray on it and that's y we will forget our prayer" . As they also heard about this from their own parents too .like this from generation by generation they started saying it and lost the real meaning of this practice.

I have to point out that dust particles don't make the prayer mat najis 😊 neither does walking over it with feet without wudu. We pray with the mat just to make sure there is no impurity in the place where we pray, but impure in islam is not the same as dirty. Someone may say that if there is mud on the mat, it's impurity - no. It may be perceived to be dirty but mud is pure and we are allowed to pray outside in the muddy ground as well. If there is urine, feces, menstrual blood, blood of impure animals, etc then it's impure and we have to clean it or pray somewhere else.

For me as a Muslim, I have not heard about it all my life, and I think it is self-evident how my leaving the carpet allows the devil to pray, and does the devil even pray, and if he prays, I will not mind. I am the first one who will support the devil’s repentance. Thinking about it If Satan repents Of course he will be punished but then return to heaven. My mom, she is my BEST FRIEND and my everything. It was a friendly smack like don't get my words wrong. My mom is one of the sweetest human I ever seen in my existence, she been strict with me whenever it needed and on other times, she's chill, alhamdullilah, I'm so blessed to have a mother like her. I'm so luck Allah swt have me a mom like her. We goof around all the time and it's not what you think. I just got a notification yrs after and I seen few these comments..... I'm so grateful to have someone like my mom around me. She didn't hurt me like that it was a friendly thing. 😭

my wife said Exactly the same, what about those who pray on the carpet like in the mosque, so it's just a superstition I'm sure, Allah knows best but I don't think there's any truth to that and I don't think the devil prayers, as the devil cries when verses of the Quran or Bible are read to it, during exorcism, the Devil is driven out by verses of the Quran, there is however jinn, that are both Muslim and non Muslim, those that are Muslim read namaaz and Quran, so maybe they mean the jinn. But they are everywhere.

I love our folklore but we need to distinguish it from the deep multilayered experience that is the Qur'an. So don't stress, leave your mats. It's probably was a boogeyman story parents told their children to teach the chore of folding and putting away the prayer rug. Similar to Western folklore of if you don't listen your parents will call some witch or other entity to take you or punish you (lol at least in the Eastern Europe, our parent will forever give us PTSD😅😂😂😂)

Salam aleykoum sis , folding the prayer mat because you fear the shaytan will pray on it is baseless so it’s a bidaa and bidaa must be avoided at all costs. But if you’re folding it just so it’s not in the way etc that’s fine ofc. As for wiping over the face like the brother here mentioned this is not a saheeh Hadith which is why wiping over the face is also baseless, making it an innovation. We should strive to keep away from bidaa as it is very dangerous for our deen, it’s a slippery slope, and we should strive uphold the sunnah

However, there is no mention of folding the corners or of Shaytan in this Hadith. In fact, the concept of a prayer mat came later.

i do question my mom and i give my own insights for this case, it is because we do not want the area on the mat where we sujud get stepped on by others which is disrespectful to make it dirty. i love logical reasoning in explaining things old folks do. however i don't use logical reasoning when it comes to aqidah, because there is no need for that.

regardless of folding or not folding prayer mat after prayer, there's no such a thing like "prayer mat" in Islam. period.

Good upbringing. The parents did not want the mat to get dirty .Shaitan will remain cursed upto end time so will never pray..However his followers can beg forgiveness and if Allah accepts their forgiveness then they will pray in any clean place in the manner shown by best of the creation. Allah SWT is our Lord, but Prophet Muhammad SAW is our role model (which idol can be used a a synonym for) of how we should behave. If we see someone with good character, then they can also be our role model, there's nothing wrong with that.

In Malaysia the way we used to fold the prayer mat was slightly difference. Not half down but half from left to right. That's it. We veil our true intention a. To avoid dirts or unseen dust b. To determine the exact spotted area as comparison. Knowing the exact area where we place the soles of the feet at standing position against area on where we place forehead at prostrating position.
