Fogged photo paper: TRASH or TREASURE?! (Part 3 - Lith)

Ойын-сауық

This time around, we are looking at using lith developer as a replacement for conventional developer and see how it works on fogged paper! Spoiler: it works really darn well.

These videos are so clear and useful. Thank-you. I had just done my own testing with essentially your experiments from your part 1 and 2 and went looking for ideas for what to try next. For one box I got to white with restrainer and bleach but some papers are too fogged for even that. I now have ideas for my next experiments

Thanks. You've convinced me - I gotta try lith printing with my boxes of fogged paper.

Awesome! Hope at least some of your paper is 'lithable'.

Well done! I've been working with vintage papers for over 9 years now, and lith is certainly my favorite technique. Now I do a bit more of my own chemistry and have other approaches. Also doing a lot with lumen just now, particularly combining lumen with regular B&W! Next approach to fog might well be lumen process* (and don't fear the fix!).

Thank you for watching! Next episode is almost certainly going to be an assortment of alternative techniques and alternative uses (such as paper negatives). I have yet to discover lumen prints for myself, definitely looking forward to that!

Well Done. I stumbled onto your videos because I was searching for ways to utilize 30 year old Kodak Paper that I was given. I literally have over 10 boxes of 100 sheets of different Kodak paper from an old high school art program. Yes. My paper was pretty fogged. Thanks to your 3 part series, I will try Lith printing and bleaching as well. I have already experimented with the first step (inhibiting the developer) but I wasn't very happy with the results. I will likely be doing a combo of all three in the near future. With over 1000 sheets of 8x10, I'll have plenty of chances to practice. I really look forward to seeing more darkroom content in the future. Cheers! Joe

Thanks for watching, so happy to hear my advice helped! The variety of things you can do even with fogged paper is staggering, 1000 sheets should be just about enough to try everything 😃

Great video, mister I may just add a little: Once we found our starting point exposure(2-3 stops longer than “normal”,true),then we can change the print contrast by changing the exposure time. Longer exposure-lower contrast, and vice versa. If you are into mixing your own solutions, there is a formula which make it affordable

Technically, exposure only really controls highlights - you can get shadows to the same density regardless of exposure, just by snatching out the print at later time when infectious development kicks in. But once we find the shadow density we like, exposure can indeed be though of as a contrast control.

Hey there, very nice and informative series of videos! Especially the first saved me some time experimenting with the retrained in the darkroom myself. Looking forward to more such darkroom oriented videos.

Great series, learned a lot. I got a whole warehouse of expired paper from the 90s virtually for free, something like 10 or 20k of sheets, most of it Agfa 24x30 cm and larger, and with your information I might now never have to buy any paper again. I'm mostly doing paper positive photography with 5x7 and 11x14 cameras, and thus bleach is nothing new to me. I am curious how this paper will work in that way. Thank you!
