This video is old, but still a GREAT review of this preamp. This is the smartest thing I ever bought for my studio. It makes every single microphone I own, sound 30% better. Yes, I made that figure up, but I am sticking by it. Even microphones I thought could not sound any better, did! I have a handful of medium to high level Ribbon microphones as well. The gain in the preamp is so clean and loud, I don't even need to use the 30-60 switch with my ribbon microphones. If I record a Bass guitar in the di input of my Focusrite 18i20. Then record a bass direct into the ISA One. There is a shocking difference. If you have the microphones you need and a good interface. Then you need to invest in the Focusrite ISA, and take it all to the next level! Another great bonus about this preamp? It will not be replaced by newer technology in a few years. It is analog, so it will be just as great 20 years from now as it is today. Can you say the same thing about your audio interface???

I didn't realize until I bought one how handy all the features really are. Cue Mix, Insert in/out and pre/post insert metering options are dynamite. And the impedence selections are all great. D.I. sounds amazing as well. There really isn't anyhting else like it on the market that even comes close to this. Great buy.

ive used and still use more expensive neve style preamps like a great river me-1nv that are all great. This preamp plays in the same league and on lot of breathy vocals it always sounds more pleasent to the ear. incredible preamp

Anthem Of The Past Gaming, it's a pre-amp so it goes before your interface. If your microphone signal is quite low then the preamp will give you a boost in level with a better signal->noise ratio than cranking your interface gain

It's good for us project studio owners that Focusrite has brought this product to market. It's versatile, the build quality is very good, it sounds absolutely wonderful, and it's an affordable professional grade mic pre.

Great pre-amp, very versatile. I've used everything from Api, Neve and Tubetech, this pre can certainly hold its own, not quite as detailed as the above, but impossible to get a bad sound from. If you are getting a bad sound, that's more than likely down to you engineering skills and not the pre.

tried to rock with this but it produces audible noise. perhaps it was a bad cable (from preamp to interface, brand name: mogami) but when the mic ran directly into the interface, there was no noise.

what does include the insert switch into the output mean? also one other question, if im plugging a guitar or bass into the instrument di its not actually hitting the preamp is it? someone told me if you want your bass ir guitar etc to hit the preamp you have to go through the line! is that correct? its hard to find correct accurate info about this pre! anyone???

I have one of these units. The insert is an effects loop, like you find on mixing boards and many modern guitar amplifiers. This is ideal for inserting, for example a compressor. Of course plugging a guitar or bass into the 1/4" input jack will then send the signal through the actual preamp section. That's the whole point of it.

Does anyone know good settings for this? i'm trying to record rap vocals (condenser mic>isa one>line 6 interface>laptop) . i always seem to get a lot of white noise coming through. any tips on how to avoid this? maybe the gain is too high on either the interface or pre.. any tips would be greatly appreciated!

  • @underpressureman

use a gate maybe? it also might be your interface! usb interfaces always have some noise to them! so try a gate, and other than that maybe turn the gain on yourr interface down a touch and turn it up on the pre, and also maybe abit of post compression might help, and always clean up your vocals by deleting any tracking where no vocals are being sang!

You have to low down the input of your interface a lot and calibrate the volume on ISA until you get a good signal.

I can't understand why I'd feed a 'cue mix' out of my interface into the ISA One and then plug my headphones into it, instead of just plugging my headphones straight into my interface as normal..?

I highly recommend most musicians, rock, pop and rap vocal alike, to purchase a Sure sm7b mic to use for this mic. It is extremely inexpensive and for what it's worth, was the same mic Michael Jackson used on thriller. Using cue mix from source, back into headphones, creates a level adjusted headphone mix without the hissing and popping. Scoop out mid and add high end ON mic it's self, as it has built in eq. Remove foam pop screan, add standard wind filter about 6 to 8 inches away. Engage 30/60 switch and adjust master boost so that you are Never clipping at your loudest and highest scream. Its OK if you cant see the waves, as they will no doubt be there. For advanced users, I recommend a daw with 0 latency and the church reverb setting to really get in and kill the vocal. If smaller set up, Bono from U2 used to creeate this effect by singing into a sm58 with both monitors ON so the bleed would create a realistic reverb. YRMV If it sounds good it is good. Happy recording!

+Gabriel BG Michael Jackson's favorite mic was the Neumann U47, that he always used. Sometimes he used the SM7 on loud vocal as he could probably use any dynamic mic. The SM7b is a transient killer so it doesn't work with any singer, especially for intimate singer-songwriter, soft vocals etc... this mic could be just wrong.
