FOCUS ON WHAT GOD CAN DO FOR YOU - Homily by Fr. Danichi Hui
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (B)

Readings:
Ezekiel 2:2-5; | Psalms 123:1-2, 2, 3-4; | Second Corinthians 12:7-10; | Mark 6:1-6;
Biblical: “There are things that you cannot control, so do not let them control you either.” This is the lesson that we could learn from our readings today.
Jesus came to his native place with his disciples. During the Sabbath, he taught in the synagogue. Many who heard him were astonished (namangha) and began to ask one another:
“Where did this man get all this?What kind of wisdom has been given him?What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands!
But their astonishment turned different when they continued asking:
Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary,and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon?And are not his sisters here with us?”
And they took offense at him. (Ayaw nila siyang kilanlin)
Reflection: Kakaibang mga tao. Sa una akala mo namangha dahil magaling si Hesus. Akala mo namangha dahil puno ng karunungan si Hesus.
Pero yung pagkamangha pala ng mga tao ay dahil hindi sila makapaniwala na siya ay anak ng isang karpintero at ni Maria.
Namangha sila dahil paano siya nagkaroon ng ganung karunugan gayong kapitbahay nila ang kaniyang mga kamag-anak.
Grabe ang mga tanong ng mga tao. Pati pamilya, uri ng trabaho at kahit ang sarili niyang lugar kinukuwestiyon. Dahil lang sa kanyang angking galing at talino. Hindi kataka-taka, kaya pala sila hindi sumampalataya.
Pero ang mas nakakagulat, kababayan pa sila ni Hesus.
Biblical: This story is similar to the story of Prophet Ezekiel in our first reading. The spirit entered him and sent him to Israel. As described in our first reading, it is a place where rebels have rebelled against God, and their ancestors revolted against God. (Isang bansang suwail. Kung saan ang kanilang mga ninuno ay naghimagsik sa Diyos. Mga taong matitigas ang ulo at walang pitagan)
His mission was to teach and tell them what God wants. But in the end, they still remained rebellious.
Contemporary: Hindi ba’t sa panahon natin ngayon nararanasan din natin ang ganito? Yung napipigilan tayo ng iba’t ibang mga puwersa.
Hindi natin magawa ang ating mga plano dahil napipigilan tayo ng mga taong hindi naniniwala sa atin.
Hindi natin matupad ang mga pangarap natin dahil sa kahirapan o kasalatan.
Hindi natin maipagpatuloy ang ating kagustuhan dahil sa pamilya.
Hindi natin magawa ang ating gusto dahil sa mga nangungutya.
O kaya naman dahil sa takot magkamali, mapahiya o wala lang lakas ng loob.
Ito yung malungkot na kuwento, napigilan tayo kahit alam naman nating mayroon tayong galing, kakayanan at talento. Pero ang mas malungkot na kuwento ay dahil nagpapigil tayo.
We allowed these forces to stop us from doing what we ought to do. I said forces because they are too strong and persistent in hindering us not to fulfill our desires.
Reflection: Kaya naman matuto tayo sa mga halimbawa ni Hesus at Propeta Ezekiel, na kahit sila ay napigilan, nahusgahan at hindi pinaniwalaan. Hindi sila nagpa-awat sa mga tumutuligsa sa kanla. Hindi sila nagpapigil sa mga puwersang pumipigil sa kanala na gawin kung ano ang maganda, tama at kaaya-aya.
My dear brothers and sisters, there are things that you cannot control, so do not let them control you either. Focus on what you can do and what God can do for you; the rest are just distractions.
