    I’m a Focal fan and that was a great review 🐢 It makes me want to own a set of Sopra No.2s. I understand speed of bass and the overall signature of the loud speaker, you described it well. It’s remarkable when you discover the next level of refinement, your 🧠 says how is that possible? That’s what makes this hobby life long, because there are always next levels to discover and achieve; like the DAC…

    Thanks so much for your review here! You've managed to convey the refinements of this speaker exceedingly well. That's no easy task! I only wish I had access to your review at the time of my purchase as it would have helped with my decision. Given the price of the Sopra No 2, it was one of those things I wanted to be absolutely certain on before pulling the trigger. Two years ago I purchased a new pair of the Sopra No 2. I auditioned sooooo many different brands of speakers before deciding on these. For the price, I wanted to make sure I was getting the speaker that sounded absolutely the best to my ears. The whole process turned me into a much better listener to be sure. I liked the way you approach the subject of which is better among brands, and your analogy to different types of food (Thai, Tuscan Italian, etc). It's spot on. For me, and my listening tastes, these speakers are truly special. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

    Love FOCAL I’m a peon with my choras but I love their sound signature and I’ve heard the choras were more in line with the sopras than the Kantas… I’m friends with a fellow focal forum guy who has sopras and utopias but absolutely loves everything about the sopras overall but really likes the Choras too. I think my pairing with dual sealed HSU subs makes up for the meaty loss of the sopras but they probably aren’t nearly as articulate… that being said… I LOVE that blue color… sopras look like they were designed by Bugatti and absolutely the most beautiful speaker in their line up. Congrats!

    Loved: "...it's still the final boss..." It gets more flavorful as you pointed out with placement and equipment. It's hard to even fathom a new Sopra and how much it would really improve by. Kind of like the Nissan GT-R 35 or like eating a damn good aged steak and then getting offered a different one after you just ate. In the interest of refreshing the line, yeah, but how and why??? Lol The french may be "non" let's climb up and move into the Scala Utopia Evo, Stella Utopia EM...... Then the wallet really starts to part. But the Sopra is still there ready to pounce. The Sopras are also asthetically gorgeous they're a great overall package that fits in any lifestyle. Great review, I had to watch it again👏 By the way who makes your acoustical treatments in the corners and Infront of your window?

    I agree wholeheartedly. I have my Sopra no 2 paired with a pair of REL S/510. I thought it wouldn't be possible to improve on what I thought was perfection, but it was a dramatic improvement for mostly the mid to upper frequencies, and the way the sound-stage came to life. Again, without the REL's the system sounded like perfection, but the improvement in mid to upper frequency and soundstage was like yet another veil (one I never even perceived before) being removed. With the REL's, you don't realize there's a pair of subs within the system they integrate so well.

    Listening to someone talking about hifi speakers who has no idea about loudspeakers, crossovers, impedance SPL vs FRQ etc etc.. If the speakers are plastered into a corner like in your video, I'm very confused how you can talk about good bass performance 😅 You're absolutely right, a Larger room allowing you to free the speakers from walls and corners, would make your Sopra perform much much better.

    After I had my Kanta, I agree w what your comments comparison &know how far it's from Sop. Indeed Kanta projected image is at face level , not above your head is good &more realistic. Also it image more intimate (I don't mean is closed)It has a more realistic image presentation &when the bass hit , it can fill my 14 feet ceiling room well . Of course I am not a bass head , as well it's driven by a17w /cSET amp ! Finally Kanta is smaller , less imposing without scarifying any signature sound w a modern French-Art look than conventional speaker . Now I know why the new Be tweeter difference is (replace the need of larger mechanical space).Indeed unlike many speakers I own , this is only speaker I truly hear instrument separation so defined (in bass region, especially)while most speaker just blends into the mix .

    I'm on vacation this week. So I did some AB comparison between my Kanta No 2 and Sopra No.3. To be fair different electronics, different rooms, but same seperate DAC. Hegel integrated for Kantas. Burmester pre-amp and a Couple of amps I like switch out. Anyhow, regarding the newer IAL3 tweeter vs the Sopras version. I firmly believe that the IAL3 was specifically designed for the Kantas. It's not as revealing or dispersive as the Sopras, but none the less it's perfect for the Kantas and very pleasing. Sometimes I enjoy the Kantas more because they are not analytical in a good way like the Sopras are, but they still have the Focal signature. The Sopras are super fun and a blessing to own too. They go way above of course where as the Kantas are a strong contender to other competition in the market/bracket. That being said the Kantas IAL3 is perfectly balanced and designed for the Kanta's midrange. Sometimes the prat is better on my Kantas. It's revealing, but nowhere near the Sopras. I also use a sub with my Kantas cause I miss the bass the Sopras give. 👍 I think what Focal has done with the Sopra's tweeter is amazing. Not only is it revealing, but it's dispersion is wider and taller, plus not fatiguing. I think the intermediate monoblock tweeter structure really extracts the most of the Sopras, plus the structure that allows that deep bass. The speed is the driver. And the intermediate structure starts with Sopra and carries on to the higher Focal lines. It's hard for me to even think what Clase's new line would do to the Sopra's for me. When I had my B&W's the M900's toned down the brightness of the diamond tweeters, but i would still get fatigued. I like Hegel for my Kantas, but I'm selfishly looking for other monoblocks for the Sopras to push them more. 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️I have them in Chameleon and can send you a pic. They are in their room, but I'm still preparing it for a Hometheater with a 2ch 7.xx hybrid. The Kantas are strictly 2 ch in our family room per my wife which is perfectly fine. Lol

    I have the Kanta 2 with the matching Kanta channel for my home theatre (My satilites are all KEF LS50 Metas). I also have 2 Kef KF92 subs. I can control the size of soundstage depending 0n where i want to crossover. I did not want too much bass in the main speaker since one can easily overload the room. That fatigues your ears besides potentially affecting your hearing. Since I am in a 2 channel home theatre environment I have 2 subs to take care of real low end anyway. The Sopras do not have more detail than the Kantas. He hears more since the bass output colors the upper ranges putting meat on the sound and hence makes it fatty and easier to pick out. I can do the same adjusting my low end with the kantas. However, the more bass you have the less air and more congestion and forward things can sound too. Hence it is a balancing act. The Sopras have their place especially in very large rooms (25x35). In rooms that are 16x22 the sopras bass maybe too much.

  • @LuxAudio389

    @LuxAudio389

    @@aaronfriedman8201 Great setup and tailoring of a 2ch and 5.xx system. Great use of the revealing Metas too for the satalites. No doubt that your system is phonomenal at both music and home theater. I'm working on a similar hybrid system, but with Sopra No 3's, Sopra center, SVS Ultras ... etc. A seperate home theater processor and 2ch Burmester with an XLR AB switch inbetween the two preamps. As for the Sopras not being more revealing, I have to disagree. My Sopras are in their own room which is large. They definitely need the space as you pointed out. But the Sopra is on a different level, not to say that the Kantas aren't. The whole idea of the Sopra's center monoblock structure/ IHL (Infinite Horn Loading) was to dissapate the sonic backwave of the tweeter, to allow free movement of the tweeter without hinderance from the back pressure it creates and to vent what wasn't absorbed out the rear grille. It also allows for utilization of the upper cabinet for better bass response through the butterfly design. The IHL monoblock also allowed Focal to keep a smaller footprint than their higher model lines which also use a IHL monoblock but have larger cabinets and woofers. In my experience with both the Sopras and Kanta No2's which I also own and have in our family room in a 2.1 config, the Sopras always have more height and width and are non fatiguing but still filled with detail, air, and subtleties that easily come out. Midrange is hard for me to describe, but vocals are seductive and silky, especially with Freya Ridings. You can really get a sense of the piano and with some recordings hear the keys being played. Same goes with stringed instruments. Imaging and soundstage is also more detailed. The bass is very fast and full without lingering. I tried using my SVS with the Sopras just to see what would happen, and they couldn't keep up. I'd most likely need a sub by REL but I nor my wife want to go there. So I will only use them for movies and tailor the crossover in the pre-pro. The tweeters on the Kanta's also move in and out and have the sonic backwave and pressure For the IAL3 on the Kanta they have IHL built into the rear housing of the tweeter and approach the problem with the tweeters movement and backwave in a different way. It is a sealed housing so I may be wrong but I would think that there is some kind of dampening material in the Kanta's tweeter housing. Bass on the Kanta's is fast, but not like just a 2ch Sopra. I like them both and sometimes prefer the Kantas. You have definitely done your homework and balanced your system to your room and goals and that's more important than just buying a speaker. There is a white paper on Focals website for the Sopras that explains the design and technology they developed for them. There are also videos on KZread that Focal has produced for both the Sopras and Kantas.

    @@LuxAudio389 Sopras definatley have more SPL output capabilities including bass. In a bigger room there is no question they would be better. If you look at Thomas review he had to sell the Sopros because his room could not take their bass in his treated room. He liked the Kanta 2 but wanted abit more bass. He actually thought Kantas 3 would work best in his room. My sub KEF KF92 use 2 9" Drivers to cancel box resonance and use DSP that allow them to get down to 11HZ. When you use these subs in a range from 11HZ upto 160Hz they are very fast. In fact from 17HZ to 125HZ they are +/- 1.25db. From 17HZ to 200HZ +/- 3db. The point is I can get more fast bass than my ears can stand. Bass is a foundation to get tonal flesh on your instrument and voice reproduction. What you said about Focal flushing out some colors is perfectly true. A couple years ago I decided to upgrade my Electra 1008 Be bookshelves. Went to my local HiFi shop. The guys offered me a beautiful orange pair of Sopra 2 (demos) for $17000 CAD, or, how about these blue Sopra 3 for $15000 CAD. Yes, that’s right; brand new Sopra 3 in their sealed boxes for 15 grand. They sell for 30000 CAD presently after the price hike. Man, what a hard decision… BTW, I hear Hegel is very nice, but if you can get superior electronics for your Sopra 2… I’m driving my 3’s with Devialet Expert pro 1000 dual mono and the sound is just amazing. Best to you in your musical journey.

    I listened to those and I found them very flat and smooth. The mids were very scooped so the vocals were in the back. Being that said, they are very listenable for long session. Dynamics are good, soundstage is decent , they are fast and pretty punchy. The treables are smooth but not brilliant which is disappointing for me. Of course with a different preamp, amp and source it will sound different but as far as I understood, this is the character of the speaker.

  • @-MarkWinston-

    There is not one ounce of data showing that the Sopras are scooped in the mids. And when you say the treble on the Sopra isnt brilliant, could you give one example of a speaker that is 'brilliant'?

I am saying to hurt anyone, it's my experience and opinion.

  • @-MarkWinston-

    @@adiriakya9724 i was just trying to access what brilliant meant to you because it can mean a different thing to others. The 802 4 has a very lifted treble, more than +6db at its peak so that is why you felt it was brilliant. The B&W is so far off neutral in its bass and treble region it's mids is recessed. The Sopras measure very neutral in comparison, espeacially the 1 and 3. Maybe you just like V shaped sounding speakers, which is totally fine. Many stay away from it as neutrality is their first goal towards accurate sound reproduction.

  • @adiriakya9724

    @adiriakya9724

    @@-MarkWinston- No one can reproduce an accurate sound production since the monitoring, signal path and equipment for pro audio is very different. no one know how the mixing engineers want it to sound and no one holds the master tape/PCM/DSDs. More than that, no microphones can capture a band, play a bass guitar, record it and try to listen in your system, it wont be even close. I listen to music to enjoy it and not to try to reproduce what the producer did... they are enjoyable speakers for long sessions for sure but i prefer mid forward speaker (usual horns) with more presence.

  • @-MarkWinston-

    @-MarkWinston-

    @@adiriakya9724 once again, false. This is a strawman argument that high fidelity doesnt exist, when in reality it does. The term high fidelity is to try reproduce sound as close as possible to the original following certain guidelines. Going +6db at the top end is straying far away from high fidelity, the most basic is to get the FR right first. There are other measurements that will determine how near or further you are getting away from accurwte reproduction and it all begins with a neutral FR. Like I said its ok for you to like a V shaped speaker, but dont claim thats high fidelity. The aim of the high fidelity is to replicate THE FINAL SOUND THAT THE PRODUCER WANTS US TO HEAR, it doesnt mean it enables us to hear everything goes on in the studio. This also applies for home theater, where THX sets certain guidelines to enable us to experience what the director intends for us to hear, we certainly do not hear shuffling feet or people whispering going on during the take because that is not the director's intentions.

    I wish you would try a YG Acoustics Carmel 2...Sopra 2 is VERY good don't get me wrong...BUT YG in my opinion is a bit better BUT and this is a BUT When you go with a YG you kind of are done shopping after that and need to focus more on electronics and scaling up. Your front end won't work with YG ever. They are too revealing and the Hegel and Benchmark will get eaten alive. The sopra easier to deal with in terms of getting it to sound good out of the box. PLUS a YG takes 500 hours to break in! You litterally have thin bass for 250 hour then by 500 it is gong down to 30 htz at -10DB. Sopra similar bass but easier to get right sooner and by 35 htz it is at -6DB. You can't go wrong with a Sopra 2. I like them more than the Utopia ones too that need a HUGE room.

I don't need a 1/2" more boomy bass driver you get with the Sopra 2. I drive my Kanta's with a Prima Luna HP Dialogue Intergrated Amp w/KT150's power tubes and a Lumin T2 Dac. They give the Kanta's a wide and high sound stage unlike what you describe. For me it's Pure Bliss.
