You should put a thermometer in a house and see what the difference in temperature is before and after the foam so you can show an example of the difference it makes. I've been inside 2 different mental building sitting next to each other. One was fiberglass insulation and the other was closed cell foam. There were 2 big shop fans full speed, and doors opened in the fiberglass insulated shop. And it was way hotter in there than it was in the foam insulated shop which had no fans and was all closed up. It was 97 and sunny that day. The foam shop actually felt like it was air-conditioned and it wasn't.

That stuff used to piss me off too my friend. Now what I do is hold back "at least" half of a subs pay until after I inspect and approve the job they did. And if I end up fixing anything they did wrong I charge a minimum of $250.00 fee that I deduct from what I owe them. I only had to do this once and all my subs got the message; now they do a final inspection themselves and I've had no problems ever since.

I don't understand why some people feel they have to comment so negatively. A simple click of the mouse or swipe of the finger and "poof!", the content you don't like, understand or agree with is gone and you've just saved yourself heartache!! I enjoy your videos. I'm from Texas as well and I don't think the barndominium concept is for me but I'd never look down on anyone who likes them. I find that the processes used in your buildings are applicable whether for conventional framing or metal buildings of ANY use. With that said, you stated in this video that the closed cell ceiling foam and the painting of it would occur the next day. Did you by chance film that? I'm building a metal shop and I am considering closed cell foam throughout and would love to see how yours turned out. Thanks again for producing enjoyable content. (Must be a Texas thing, huh?!)

I have questions about foam... 1. How do you rewire the home, fix plumbing if loaded with foam? 2. When renovating, can a wall with foam be changed? 3. I thought foam was a playground for termites? They dont eat it, but harder to see their penetration? 4. What is the projected life span? 100 yrs, 200 yrs? 5. If a fire happens is the byproduct toxic? Can say. Rowdy pet who digs, get ahold of it, is it toxic? 6. Is there a weight of the finished foam vs weight of fiberglass?

I worked for a builder for 10 years that used foam and fiberglass together. The studs were foamed where the sheetrock met the stud, basically the edge/corner and fiberglass installed over it. We had to tear out parts of walls on occasion and it was pretty aggravating. If the entire thing is foamed like they are doing here I'd imagine it would be a real pain in the ass. My opinion is you need to weigh the pros vs cons, I feel the pros outweigh the cons.

The best open cell spray foam is still no substitute for a vapor barrier. You MUST have a correctly applied vapor barrier with all thru-envelope penetrations sealed with the appropriate products such as those made by Prosoco. No exterior wall on any building that I commission will be built without wood sheathing or a masonry wall. I do love the umbrella provided by those long roof overhangs.

First of all, thanks for taking the time to do these videos. I plan on building a barndominium in the future and have actually visited your website a few times for ideas. Unfortunately I am in east Texas and out of your service area. Your videos have greatly increased my knowledge on the subject. While the spray foam appears to be a great way to insulate, I do have a question that I cannot seem to find an answer for anywhere on the internet. I notice in this video that the foam is being applied directly over all wiring and piping in the walls. While pex piping is a great invention, it is still subject to needing repairs due failure in the future. Fittings are definitely a weak point. As for the wiring, I realize these are new homes and one would think that the owner will be completely satisfied by the quality I see that you guys build in. However, what happens when they realize that a room doesn't have lighting in all the places they might need it and want to install a new fixture or wall outlet? One would think that the pipes and wiring would be put in some type of conduit/raceway in order to allow for repairs/revisions in the future. Using the spray foam without either of these solutions or another suitable application it would appear that you would have to tear out sheet rock the full run of the wire/piping in order to repair/replace/revise. So I guess my question is, when dealing with my contractor in the future, what is the feasibility of using conduit or a raceway for this application? Would it be something they would likely even consider doing? Thanks again for the videos!

I have seen recommendations to add reflective bubble insulation then firing strips on outside of steel frame before adding steel wall and or roof. This is supposed to reduce heat transfer from steel to inside of building. insulation is then added to interior. Building in Nevada so main concern is high temperatures with high sun exposure, rain and cold less of a concern. If adding reflective bubble insulation in this fashion would foam insulation be recommended or an option? are there other options to improve solar radiant heat transfer?

The closed cell foam roof was laying on top of the melted steel structure when the insurace folks arrived! The roof would not support combustion. Great material inside or out. Outside must be painted tho.

Close cell vs open cell. A he I worked on was wood sheeting exterior on studs, drywall inside with insulation, not close cell. So pipe leaked, wood rotted, drywall needed to removed and the insulation was saturated. Wouldn't bit been better for a closed cell application to prevent water spreading and would it also insulate the pipes as well?

It is NOT cheap, and he could have easily quoted it by the Drum Board coverage and did not. A good rule of thumb is $2.00 PSF and remember you get better (more) coverage with open cell than closed cell. Closed Cell is for roofs, walls and open cell is used mostly in attics. the initial R factor of a single spray is usually around 91-93% but a second spray to increase it to 98% is not really worth the extra cash outlay. Also remember that this system is approved for Attic Use of Closed Ventilation, (no ridge caps or eave windows)

Apparently you or your foam installer doesn't know you should NOT spray foam on plastic pex fitting. Those fittings look like Wirsbo/Uponor. I was told by Uponor rep there can be a chemical reaction between the plastic fitting and the spray foam, the tube is OK. All you need to do is wrap the fittings with tape or something and you are good to spray. Hope those fittings are good at least till your warranty is up. More just for everyones info just wrap the fittings.

houses aren't meant to "breathe". The better air seal the better! You have to manage the humidity and temperature inside with something like an ERV or HRV OR a whole house dehumidifier that takes in outside air and filters it.

That is all done before spray application. Especially Attics. You do not want to wreck your R Value and incurr cost of extra re-spray due to missed something oopsy's. It just is not cost effective. Though this shows a wall spray, most people do NOT do wall sprays because it eats up all your space in the walls for future changes. Planning your wall vapor barriers and insulation ratings is better achieved using different methods. I have seen it done with the closed cell (less expansion rate) but IF you EVER want to make changes, you are pissing away your money on wall sprays.

When they spray foam I would think that if they tried to make it as smooth as possible an level in the cavity it would be better, as you do concrete in the forms ,example some foam just touches the 2x8

It's really not. A friend of mine has a 20x40 shop sprayed with closed cell and he said it was about $2500. I'm sure a barndominium that size may cost a little more with having to cover everything and filling in all the spaces around windows and doors.

So the question I have is, if closed cell gives a vapor barrier, then why use open cell if it doesn’t? Where is your vapor barrier with open cell?

  • @chevyv.2281

It depends on if you’re applying the foam in a hot climate needing cooling or a cold climate needing heat. Typically, it’s ideal to apply closed cell foam in colder climates needing heating. This is due to the closed cell acting as a vapor barrier, and not allowing the warmer air on the inside to find the cooler air on the outside wall and causing condensation. With closed cell foam, it is vapor permeable and is suited to warmer climates needing more cooling, assuming that there is a WRB such as Tyvek applied correctly to the outside. Hope this helps.

How do you keep ants, in particular, fire ants out of the spray insulation. I use closed cell urethane insulation board to insulate my beehives and I can't keep the ants out of it no matter what I do. We are in the process of building a barndominium and initially wanted to go with closed cell spray foam but have great reservations with respect to ants getting into the foam insulation. Is the spray foam treated with a chemical to keep ants out of it?

I notice that when this foam is applied it does not fill the entire stud cavity, is there a reason behind this? I have seen other applications where foam does fill cavity and someone comes behind applicator and has a long flexible knife and trims foam flush (relatively) to edges of stud cavities. Is either system more or less beneficial? Still waiting for TB to come to Wisconsin and build me a #62, LOL. Thanks Erik.

Mykel Hardin in Texas 2x4 exterior walls are still very common. Texas is a cooling climate. We’re wanting to lower indoor temp by 20°-30°. In the north they are raising the indoor temp majority of the year. Usually 50°-70°. That’s a higher delta T. Which requires a higher insulation value. Thats why 2x6 are used in the north.

@@DS-to1wf It's the job of your HVAC system to ventilate your house, so the air can be 'conditioned' to the desired state before it gets pushed throughout the house, including dehumidifying. Leaky houses may have been a thing decades ago, but these days with everything geared toward high efficiency, air tightness should be a priority, not just for comfort and efficiency, but also to prevent toxins, contaminants, bugs and rodents from infiltrating the envelop of the house. The only way air should enter your home is thru the HVAC system... of course, unless you open a door or window lol.

I am going through a foaming nightmare scenario in my own home remodel. His application temperature was too cold, his mix was off, and his pressure was too high so he put too much down, mixture was very inconsistent, awful smell, now a week later, some it feels like cotton candy and some of it feels like a 20lb foam. there is about 6 inches of cut off and He is having to pay another company, to remove it and re spray it.
