All these comments hating on Chang baffle me. If he's so bad, remind me again who won the match and the tournament? If Lendl was so much better why didn't he destroy the moonballs? Gee, it is almost like Chang is playing a totally unique style and using the mental side of the game??? Not illegal, and why would it be?

Chang here playing very much like Mats Wilander played Lendl. Keeping the ball in play until Lendl gets frustrated, and mixing it up at times. Wilander could hypnotise Lendl into being passive and having a Brain freeze on the court at times, and Chang did something similar here.

This "another player" should look at the carreer of Chang & compare it to the carrer of Lendl. What is true is that it seems that Ivan made the mistakes he did during the years 82-84 when he was playing versus Jimmy Connors

I still can't believe Chang came back to win this. Lendl had experience, supreme fitness, and dominance as his edges. Yet somehow, even with severe cramping, this Michael Chang kid came back and beat him. Partial choke job, to be sure. But Chang was amazing in his own right, and proved it wasn't a fluke by winning the whole thing.

Lendl was right: due to an irregularity of the sand's spread, the ball did not bounce as high as it should have right before his forehand. He did not have enough time to adjust his shot, that costed him the point. It was on a (re-)break chance for him and he was in a good position to attack...

dang, i have the same racket as chang's. Never thought it has been around for quite a long time, for 3 decades now. And it's still doing a pretty good job. Still in one piece..Rafa also uses the tactic employed by Chang here on Lendl's backhand. Hitting high topspin to the backhand to elicit a short ball from Lendl then he pounds the ball down the line, making it out of Lendl's reach.

Lendl has said that he was more focused on Wimbledon at this stage of his career, since he’d never won it. Still a great achievement by Chang, considering his age and how much more developed a player he’d be by 1995.

Michael Chang is definitely worth of Hall of Fame and being called Legend. Here are some reasons that proves it. 1) He won French Open once, the Grand Slam, much more it is THE YOUNGEST achievement in the all time history which has not been eclipsed yet. 2) Some other tennis players with age close to Michael Chang, such as (a) Todd Woodbridge and (b) Mark Woodforde, are also the Tennis Hall of Famer. (a) Then the Grand Slam Single Results of Woodbridge are Wimbledon - Semifinal, French Open - 3R, US Open - 3R, and Australian Open - 4R. (b) Then Mark Woodforde's Grand Slam Single Results are Wimbledon - 4R, French Open - 4R, US Open - 4R, and Australian Open - Semifinal. Michael Chang made his Grand Slam Singles Results as French Open - Champion (at the youngest age of all time even now), US Open - Finalist (2nd), Australian Open - Finalist (2nd), and Wimbledon - Quarterfinal. Then even both Woodforde and Woodbridge are listed in the Hall of Fame, so this is ample reason to list Michael Chang in the list of Hall of Fame for Chang's having better Single Results in the Grand Slam than other 2 I wrote here. 3) In addition, (a) even an Australian Tennis player Patrick Rafter has his Grand Slam Single Results as Australian Open - Semifinal, French Open - Semifinal, Wimbledon - Finalist (2nd), and US Open - Champion. (b) Brazilian Tennis player Gustavo Kuerten is also a hall of famer. He won French Open 3 times, for sure, however Kuerten's highest position he advanced in other Grand Slam are, Wimbledon Quarterfinal, US Open - Quarterfinal and Australian Open - 3R. Then Rafter and Kuerten were both also listed in the Hall of Fame. Michael Chang with French Open Champion Title at the youngest age, also advanced to the Final in US Open and Australian Open while Wimbledon was Quarterfinal. The impact of Chang, Rafter, and Kuerten are almost the same, or maybe Chang is a bit better than even other two written here. 4) Michael Chang was leading the USA to the champion in Davis Cup in 1990 by winning the semi-final and final,, and also was a leading figure of the US squad in World Team Cup in 1993. 5) Chang is one of very few player who won matches with Lendl twice. The win-loss record Chang has with famous players are: vs Connors 12-12, vs Rafter 7-4, vs Ivanisevic 6-4, vs Edberg 9-12, vs Lendl 2-5, vs Matsuoka 3-0, vs Sampras 8-12, and vs Agassi 7-15. So Michael Chang has more wins than losses to some strong rivals, while other strong rivals have more wins than losses than Chang, but on the other hand, nobody or very few players won that many times in his generation in games with Lendl, Edberg, Sampras, and Agassi. Winning two games in Grand Slam from Lendl is miracle. Lendl himself also admitted it's worth of praise. 6) Chang was year-end top 10 (his career high of the world ranking was the 2nd) for 6 consecutive years matched in the decade only by Sampras. 7) His three Indian Wells Masters titles which is known as BNP Paribas Open, had been ATP record for 15 years till it was replaced by Federer. 8) Chang is one of a few players who won titles in ATP tours for 3 decades. 9)So the impact of winning the Grand Slam title at the youngest age of all time which isn't replaced yet, and won-loss record with strong players, continuous and consistent position which had been high, some ATP record etc... are the proof of Michael Chang as a player worth of being Hall of Famer. Grand Slam, Davis Cup, ATP, Olympic, are all important.

Charles Feng but Michael Chang won French Open (Grand Slam) AT THE YOUNGEST AGE OF ALL TIME OF TENNIS HISTORY WHICH IS STILL VALID AS THE RECORD. In addition, Chang is finalist of US Open and Australian Open, while he had most wi in BNP Parbas Open and won title of ATP for 3 decades and led the US Squad to the world champion in Davis Cup in 1990 and World Team up in 1993. Some tennis players with lower achievement than Michael Chang (even win-loss record) are Hall of Famer, so it is NEVER STRANGE and NEVER JOKE that Michael Chang is also a Hall of Famer now, like I commented many times here in this video comments. He is worth of Hall of Fame.

***** Chang is the ALL TIME YOUNGEST CHAMPION of GRAND SLAM, French Open, and he had been reigning as the most win player in ATP tour till the record was replaced by Federer. Some other players such as Patrick Rafter and Connor are also Hall of Famer but they lost more than they won in games with Michael Chang or even, and frequency of champion title such as Grand Slam and ATP are equivalent. So Michel Chang is worth of being Hall of Famer (actually he is) because even Rafter and Connor are Hall of Famer. Michael Chang has been 3 decades continuing winning ATP tour champion, and 7 or 8 years consecutively within the top 10, which is what only Agassi could achieve in the same way. In addition, if you look at the list of the world tallest man officially recognized by Guinness, the top 5 are Asian, X.S.Bao (236.20cm), Sun Mingming (236cm), Zhao Liang (235cm), Yasutaka Okayama (230cm), and Yao Ming (230cm). Especialy Sun Mingming was the world tallet basketball player and Yao Ming was the tallet in NBA and he has title of the top scorer and all tournament team of FIBA Basketball world cup held in Japan and the USA, respectively. They are the world tallest people WITHOUT ANY HEALTH PROBLEM. So they can walk and run without stick. Some of them ar athletes such as Basketball player, and one of them is a Herdsman. If these Asian tall players genuinely start training Tennis, they can beat the current tennis players with height only less than 2m, ad these current professional players will cry like babies with humiliation. About Robert Wadlow and Sultan Kosen, they are tall but they cannot walk and jog without stick. Wadlow died at the age of 20 !! Wadlow and Kosen is tall because they are sick and their height is disease. So they cannot play any sports. But 5 Asians above are tall while their tall height are NOT disease. That's why they can run and play sports. The 5 Asian Men written above are the world tallest men WITH NO PROBLEM ON HEALTH AND CAN BE ATHLETIC. In addition, the top3 of the highest IQ scientists are also Asian. No.1 is Dr.Terence Tao with IQ250 and he is a Fields Medal winner which is the world highest Math prize.Tao is all time the youngest winner of Gold Medal in Math Olympic. Now he is an alumnus of Princeton University and now he is professor of Math in one of the top rank university in the USA. He was scouted by the university. No.2 is Dr. Christopher Hirata with IQ240.He is the ALL TIME YOUNGEST Gold Medal in Physics Olympic. Now he is astro physicist in NASA. No.3 is Dr. Kin Eun-yong with IQ225 and he is the ALL TIME YOUNGEST NASA astro physicist. The youngest Nobel Prize winner in 3 prizes of Science Section are Dr. T.D. Lee and Dr C.N. Yang, both are the Nobel Laureate in Physics. What I mean is if these world smartest people start building up tactic of Tennis, or produce Tennis-robot with AI and let it play, with the professional Tennis players now and those days, then the players will miserably lose. It´s a long way from winning the 4th round to taking the title, though. That being said, I would have loved to see a Lendl-Edberg final at Roland Garros! As for the worst loss of his career, I´m not sure if Lendl would agree. He already had won that tournament three times, so it´s not that he missed a once in a lifetime opportunity. I´m pretty sure some of his Wimbledon losses hurt him more.

That´s a bit unfair, though. First of all, tennis is played with the mind as much as with the racket and the strings. And second, compared to today´s one-dimensional baseline robots Chang was anything but a pusher. Unlike them, not only did he have plan A, but also plans B, C, D and E - and that´s what won him the match! He also used the whole court, and closed out points at the net frequently. In my opinion, Lendl tried to outlast Chang. He would readily play endless rallies in the first three sets, and in the end that strategy backfired, since he himself got tired, too.

Michael Chang won 2 matches of Grand Slam from Lendl. This is great thing. Michael Chang is definitely worth of Hall of Fame and being called Legend. Here are so many reasons that proves it. 1) Michael Chang won the champion title of French Open, the Grand Slam one, then this achievement he accomplished is THE YOUNGEST ACHIEVEMENT in all time history of Grand Slam, which has not been eclipsed yet. 2) Some other Tennis players aged close to Michael Chang, such as (a) Todd Woodbridge and (b) Mark Woodfordes, are also the Hall of Famer. (a) Then the Grand Slam Singles Results of Tood Woodbridge are, Wimbledon - Semifinal, French Open - 3R, US Open - 3R, and Australian Open 4R. (b) Then Mark Woodforde's Grand Slam Single Results are Wimbledon - 4R, French Open - 4R, US Open - 4R, Australian Open - Semifinal. Michael Chang made his Grand Slam Single Results as French Open - Champion ( as the youngst age of all time even now ), US Open - Finalist (2nd), Australian Open - Finalist (2nd), and Wimbledon - Quarterfinal. Then even both Woodbridge and Woodforde are listed at the Hall of Fame, so this is ample reason to list Michael Chang ii the list of Hall of Fame for Chang's having better Single Results in Grand Slam than other 2 I wrote. 3) I addition, (a ) even an Australian Tennis player Patrick Rafter has his Grand Slam Sinlgle Resuts as Austrian Open - Semifinal, French - Open - Semifinal, Wimbledon - Finalist (2nd), and US Open - Champion. (b) Braizilian Tennis player Gustavo Kuerten is also a hall famer. He won French Open 3 times, for sure, however, Kuerten's highest position he advanced in other Grand Slam are , Wimbledon - Quarterfinal, US Open - Quarterfinal, and Australian Open - 3R. Then Rafter and Kuerten were both also listed in the Hall of Fame. Michael Chang with French Open Champion Title at the all time youngest age, also adcanced to the Final in US Open and Australia Open while Wimledon was Quarterfinal. The impact of Chang, Rafter, and Kuerten are amost the same, or maybe Chang is a bit better than even other two written there. 4) Michael Chang was laeding the USA to the champion in Davis Cup in 1990 by winning the semi-final and the final, and also was a leading figure of the US Squad in World Team Cup in 1993. 5) Chang is one of very few player who won matches with Lendl twice, The win-loss record Chang has with famous and strong rivals and players are: vs Connors 12-12, vs Rafter 7-4, vs Ivanisevic 6-4, vs Edberg 9-12, vs Lendl 2-5, vs Matsuoka 3-0, vs Sampras 8-12, and vs Agassi 7-15. So Michael Chang has more wins than losses ro some strong rivals, while other strong rivals have more wins than losses than Chang, but on the other hand, nobody or very few players won that many times in his generation in matches with Lendl, Edberg,Sampras, and Agassi. Winning two matches in Grand Slam from Lendl is miracle. Lendl himself also admitted Chang's wins are worth of praise. 6) Chang was year-end top 10 (his career high of the world ranking was the 2nd) for 6 consecutive years matched in the decade only by Sampras. 7) His three Indian Wells Masters title which is known as BNP Paribas Open, had been ATP record for 15 years till it was replaced by Federer. 8) Chang is one of a few players who won titles in ATP tours in three decades. Michael Chang had been consistent, competive, and long continuing payer who is rare type among tennis players. 9) So the impact of CHang's winning the Grand Slam title (Frech Open) at the youngst age of all time which isn't replaced yet, and win-loss record with strong players, continuous and consistent high position for very long time, sme ATP records etc... are the proof that Michael Chang is a ex Tennis player worth of being a Hall of Famer. Grand Slam, Davis Cup, ATP, BNP Parisbas Open, World Team Cup, are all important and Michael Chang made his achivement that deserves being a Hall of Famer.

The New Balls Gen (Hewitt, Roddick, Nalbandian) ...The Lost Gen (Berdych, Tsonga, Ferrer) and Gen useless (Dimitrov, Nishikori, Raonic) all would have won more slams in other eras. The Next gen are lucky they won't play their prime years alongside the 3 greatest players ever, but the big 3 are still taking slams from even them.

Had Lendl won this match (which he should have in 4 sets), he would have won the French Open in 1989, having already won Monte Carlo and Rome that year on clay and the clear favorite for the French. This had to be the most devastating loss of Lendl’s career. Winning the 1989 French would have given him the boost and confidence for the next 2 years of prime left in his career. This match shattered his ego and he had a hard time winning important and close marches after this one. It was sad to see such a great champion and machine crumble in front of our eyes.

It's total luck for Chang in this match. Near the end, with Chang cramping like this, if he had played a relentless attacker like Edberg, every serve would be punished and he would lose badly. For some strange reason Lendl did not attack the weak serve. He was just trying to wear Chang out, but it backfired.

Shroomyfeelings is asking why there is no youtube available with the end of this match. Lendltennis' answer is that the French tennis union has the copy rights, especiallsy the bits that are so characteris of this match: the under hand serve of Chang for instance. Shroomyfeelings thanks Lendltennis thanks Lendltennis for the answer, and can not believe that for an old match as this copyrights still apply. I am still gutted by the result of this match, I was/am a big Lendl fan, and this hurt really bad. Almost as the 1987 wimbledon final. I felt that Lendl was trying hard to power out Chang, but he succombed to the lob balls with no power, varied with some good groundstrokes from Chang. Also the whole drama of the cramps really annoyed me back in 1989.
