Flying to The Bahamas - MzeroA Flight Training
m0a.com It should be a bucket list item for all pilots. In this video I share a little bit about our journey and some tips for making the trip yourself.

Rusty pilot getting his instrument rating! Always been afraid of heights - always surprises people. Jason, thank you for all of your great work, you have been a big part of my "rusty process" I am so grateful to have found you. My warmest and best to you and yours.
Love your vids, and thanks for sharing the 242 🇧🇸 to the world , respect and love brother, all the best to you and your family, and continued success with your channel.🙏
It's on my bucket list for sure.... feel free to do another video highlighting the process you go thru. Have watched AOPA video but still enjoy others experiences also. Thanks Jason
Thanks for being awesome and repping us so well. 🇧🇸😎
That's so nice of you to take Marvin up in the air. Awesome work and great video Jason!
I'm afraid of heights too Jason! Got my instrument rating.
Enjoyed flying to Treasure Cay when I was living close to KHWO. It was awesome indeed. And yes, I do have a fear of heights as well. Great video.
Jason this is a definitely on bucket list. Thank you for all the videos. Wishing you and your family a Happy New 2017. Lot of blue sky.
glad to have had you here. Need to check out a few more of our Islands. beautiful wonders :)
Haa, we were in Marsh Harbour at the same time. I fly a 210 over there. It would have been a great thrill to have met you. I continue to learn every day thanks to videos like yours. Thank you for what you provide!
I would suggest that you are not afraid of heights but rather afraid of falling. I have the same fear, mostly around edges like on a building, cliff or light house. However I really like to be high up in an airplane. My second flight instructor mentioned the difference. He said many students would mention a fear of heights but not be bothered by flying. Thus the distinction between height and a fear of falling off an edge. BTW thanks so much for the many great videos. I've enjoyed every one of them.

I agree with the "fear or falling" idea. For me, being the PIC of an airplane means I have control of my rate of descent and all that so I'm not that scared.

I think you’re spot on, in the airplane you control your rate of fall but climbing a ladder etc you lose that ability to arrest the fall should you. Hence the fear of heights is as you say the fear of falling
Love the Video! I am from Freeport and my family manages the marina in Hope Town (I'm sure you met them). I live in South Florida and I am halfway through my PPL now and cannot wait to start flying there to visit the family.
This is on my list as well as driving one of our Scarab Jet Boats to Exumma Bahamas!
Hey, Jason! Another excellent video, that I'm just now stumbling upon. I'm a fellow pilot who's afraid of heights. And I know quite a few others, too! It's always puzzled me...
Jason, I have made this flight 30+ times with good friend in a Baron, but now our families have outgrown six seats and on Saturday the 24th, I will be making my first trip over alone in a 182Q with the wife and daughter. I am super excited as well as super nervous! Enjoyed talking with you a Osh this year.. Wish me luck!
I meet a lot of pilots during my job as a dispatcher, it seems like this is a common thing with pilots. I am with you Jason, scared of heights as well and I am a PPL studying ATPL currently. Regards from Malta in Europe
I'm with you Jason on the Heights deal.....😎👍 Met you at the AOPA Fly In and am friends w Jeff Wolf @ Paragon👌HAPPY AND SAFE NEW YEAR!!!!
Great Video! I was wondering if you could do a video discussing the base to final turn. What to watch out for and consider when in the turn. Your videos helped me get my PPL over the summer.
I'm scared of heights too but mostly looking off cliffs and sky scrapers. Being in a plane, especially the cockpit is enjoyable and I'm sucked to the glass just in love with the view. It's quite weird that I can be polar opposite.
Finally getting back into aviation after 17 years. I am afraid of heights and I am definitely planning on flying to the Bahamas. I have flown to Key West.
Can't imagine to have a pilot job flying places like this...just so beautiful
Definitely not alone, Jason! I'm also very afraid of heights... except when I'm in an airplane. I'm so glad to know I'm not the only crazy one 😅
I'm really afraid of heights but couldn't live without flying!

same for me, people don't believe me lol
We always wear our life vests when going to the Bahamas!! It only makes sense. Yes, I am scared of heights as well:)
thanks giving him his first loggable flight...I have given a bunch their first flights for free and have some more on my list for next year...keep up the good work of spreading the passion

Hey Gary. Time in the plane will help, your body will get use to the motion. Focus on the horizon or outside the plane helps too, if you are starting to feel ill. ( As you learn the sounds and feel of the plane, you will be able to focus more outside of the plane too. ) . Hope this helps. These comments are based on my own experience of learning to fly.

Sorry this reply is for Mauricio Ferreyra. My bad.
Jason it is hard to see but if you are using flotation vests with built in flotation panels you should consider using inflatable vests. Standard flotation vests could actually work against you if you are upside down in a ditching. Trying to swim out of the plane while your vest is trying to float you could be detrimental especially for small kids. Use an inflatable vest that you activate after getting clear of the aircraft.
I'm flying a Cessna 172 to the Bahamas for the 1st time this Sunday 2/16/20. Everything you said in this video I have. I've watched every video about flying to the Bahamas. I think I'm ready.

Have a fantastic trip. Let us know how it goes!
I'm a pilot and scared of heights! I find it so funny 😂😂😂😂. When you're in the cockpit you're enclosed and secure and don't really think about the heights
great video, thanks for sharing!!
I'm super afraid of heights aswell! Started flying in 2010 so I'm getting used to looking at the world from the birds eye perspective. In the airplane, I'm all good.. but once I'm outside that airplane on a steep cliff or up in a tall ladder... Each and every time is just as scary!
You're not the only pilot who is afraid of heights. I'm a commercial rated pilot and I am terrified of heights. I once flew myself to Chicago but was unable to get up the nerve to go to the top of the Willis Tower. I then flew myself home later that evening.
Fun. :-) I've flown to the U.S.A. (from Canada) a couple of times. It's straightforward if you do your homework. Same eAPIS, same Customs sticker on the plane.
that's an awesome video. I live in Grand Bahama, I would have loved to meet you guys in person, I'm a huge fan as well!
Another great video. Thank you! The main takeaway - always, Always, ALWAYS have your life vest on (and all your survival gear) BEFORE venturing out over the open water in a single engine airplane. :^)
Great video!!!
Fear of heights? A little bit. But fear of flying? YES!! I took flying lessons in part to get over that fear. It worked. After getting my PPL I fly as much as possible--about 150 hrs per year. And it'd be even more if I was IFR Cert (which is only about a month away).
Yep, that's me as well, helicopter or plane no sweat, an amuament park ride that goes over 10ft, panic overload.
"Point of no return" is not the dreadful thing you seem to think it is. It's just the point at which if something goes wrong you no longer have fuel to return to the origin. Interesting video. I'd like to make the trip myself. Looking for tips/instructions on how.
I'm a bit strange in that way as well. I can't handle heights but I'm completely comfortable being up in a plane and looking down out the window.
I second that fear of heights too. And Im a pilot
Nippers! We did that last year...too much fun.
Scared of heights myself. I skydived also.
I’m originally from New England. When I started flying the first few times over water seemed a bit nerve wracking, but in time I got used to it. Really it’s no different that’s flight over densely populated cities, or mountains. Flying to the Bahamas would be no worse than crossing Lake Michigan or other large bodies of water. For a group of people, I’d bring a raft. It takes some planning to have it set up to deploy quickly in the event of ditching. I’d rehearse with whoever will be responsible to deploy the raft. Also, inflatable vests are lightweight and not uncomfortable.
I flew to the Bahamas in a Cessna 206 in the 80s. We also left from West Palm landed at West End. I was a piece of cake in those days. We had our flotation gear and AC papers ie owner ship papers that we owned the AC. We filed a flight plan but it wasn't required and made no contact any Bahamas government personal until we called West End tower.. We then cleared customs and we were in. The even allowed us to drop a couple of skydivers. Coming back we ddin't even file a flight plan and talked to no one except West Palm tower Taxied to custom and that was it. Those were the days.
I'm scared of heights, yet I bungee jumped, sky dived, and I'm a pilot. Nothing more satisfying than overcoming your fears!
THE BAHAMAS MY HOMETOWN
I am also afraid of heights but I love to fly a plane!
i also get pretty nervous on high structures but I think im afraid of falling. im glad im not the only pilot with that fear! lol
Its very hard to be critical of someone who is being "too safe" when it comes to being within glide distance of shore, BUT............. IMHO, flying beyond gliding distance over (warm) water with appropriate gear, is less risky than 1) Flying over rugged terrain in a single, 2) Flying at night in a single, 3) Flying in IMC in a single. Not saying you should be dismissive of it, but I think in comparison to the 3 others I mentioned, its probably less of a risk.
I'm also afraid of some heights as well. Looking out of a window from a tall bldg
Pilot ... and scared of hights as long as I am not in an airplane :-P Thanks for making me feel not so alone. Greetings from Germany and a blessed new year 2017!
Is this going to be a yearly trip? I'm currently enrolled in flight school for my PPL and would love to tag along with other planes on this trip! Thanks and very nice video
Jason I'm terrified of heights too. Probably more the fear of falling more than anything. When people find out I'm a pilot AND scared of heights they look at me like I have 3 heads
can you make a video on how to do DME arcs??
I know this video is a little old, but I'm surprised to hear that some people that fly have a fear of heights. I'm not a pilot yet, but it good to hear I'm not the only one. I can not stand heights. I don't even like thinking about them.

You definitely are not the only one! Thanks for sharing, Jon!
I used to not be afraid of heights when I was a kid but as I got to be a teenager and an adult I developed that fear. I think it has to do with a sense of balance I'm fine at altitude it just transitioning to and from altitude scares me a bit.
I dont like being up high in those condo's. Dont blame you.. Good job overcoming your fear and being a strong Dad.
hehe, yes Jason I will admit, even though im a professional pilot and a CFI-I , i am scared of heights, get me on a 10 foot ladder and i am paranoid, but me at 9000 feet in the diamond DA40, im all good... weird i know.

86poulin you are afraid of falling, not heights
Yeah being at the top of a light house and flying are too different sensations entirely I'm with you on the slightly afraid of heights thing... "slightly"
I grew up on Sanibel / Captiva Islands -- What airport did you leave from? PAGE FIELD?
Nice
I work as a volunteer in the Federal Pavilion at OSH every year. In the Federal Pavilion, representatives from the government of the Bahamas are there with lots of free information, maps, and advice on where to go and what to see. There are multiple seminars presented during the week that explains the process of getting to and from the Bahamas by private aircraft. These presentations are also eligible for WINGS credit for those in the WINGS program. I am the person who introduces the seminars (in the mornings) and collects the information for all who desire WINGS credit. I would encourage anyone considering a trip to the Bahamas to come by the Federal Pavilion, enjoy the presentation and talk with the Bahamians.
My dad, ww2 B24 navigator was afraid to be on the wing while refueling but would lay in a net with bomb Bay doors open to take photos at altitude after bomb runs in the South Pacific.
I had my discovery flight today! As my birthday gift to myself. We had some wind going up and before we reached a smoother height I kind of got the feeling I was getting sick. Any thoughts on getting over that? I'm not afraid of heights but I'm not a fan of roller coasters.

So Jason , what's your take on making the trip without your instrument rating ? I'd love to do it but a friend said I'm nuts without having my IFR. Love your input on this .

Guys, I did it all the time without my instrument rating. No issues at given the fact most of the airports are closed at night, so hey. . .what's the big deal. I would Bimini and back regularly as well just for pits and grins. As long as you're weather cognizant and perform your due diligence weather check, no problem.
I'm afraid of heights, too. I have my PPL.
Actually having the life vests on in the plane is really dangerous if they are pre-inflated or just foam vests that don't inflate, because if the plane sinks and the vests are starting to float you to the roof of the plane it is almost impossible to get out.
You did not meet up with Steveo1kinevo? that is his backyard.

SteveO flies out of my home airport KOPF. I see him all the time. Everytime I fly I walk past 1TB to get to my plane
I'm afraid of heights too
Brother the older I get the less I like heights myself. Your not alone :P
HAHAHA. I am afraid of heights too!!!!
PPL for 9 years, still afraid going up a ladder, and Yes you are not alone lol
I'm TOTALLY afraid of heights. Ladders, tall buildings, can't do it. Airplanes? Totally fine. My flight instructor is the same way!
I don't like ledges or carnival rides, but I've always loved to fly. Give me a pair of wings and I'm fine.
I am have the exact same fear
Make that at least two flight instructors that are scared of heights.. haha!
haha I get weak in the knees on a building.. But flying is cake!
You are not the only pilot is as scared of heights.
Petrified of being stationary when at high places. Flying fun. Climbing bad.
I know Marvin

Lol this is my flight school
I’m a pilot whose afraid of heights
Heights while I'm moving, such as piloting a plane, fine. Heights standing on a bridge or high rise, hell no
Pilot here but climb a ladder to the roof? Nope!
Jump out of some perfectly good airplanes (or the same twin otter a bunch of times) and get your USPA class A license and those heights won't bother you as much anymore.

Once you do totally get over the fear though and you end up on some high up edge you'll realize that the thing forcing you to grab on tight when peering over the edge is no longer there. It's a really strange feeling realizing that the fear you had before acted as a kind of safety net and now you have to actively remind yourself about the danger.
