Flying, Thermaling & XC Paragliding Tips with Supair Savage & Delight 4 Sport

Flying, thermaling and cross country (XC) paragliding tips with Flybubble's Carlo Borsattino, flying the Supair Savage paraglider and Delight 4 Sport paragliding pod harness.
Join Flybubble Carlo in this new video with his XC and paragliding thermaling tips. Carlo was starting low close to take off at Devils Dyke and then slowly progressing all the way up to the cloud base which is "the goal / the end".
✅ Carlo's idea was to show Supair Savage paraglider in action with a couple of quick thoughts about it and also a word or two about Delight 4 Sport + adding some XC and thermaling Tips along the way.
🔥 Let us know your thoughts about this new video and comment below which one was your best XC and thermaling tip.👇👍

ℹ In this video Carlo was flying the Savage size M (85-105kg) near the middle of the weight range, at around 95kg all-up. He's also flown the Savage M at around 90kg all-up (with a Woody Valley Crest light harness and Companion SQR light 100 ultralight reserve) in even weaker conditions, and was able to soar and even climb in very weak thermals when no one else was able to stay up. Of course some luck and timing was involved. Having said this, we've found that the Savage climbs exceptionally well even when loaded near or at the top of the weight range. (Actually even slightly over the top, but we don't generally recommend this.)
Video review of Supair Delight 4 and Delight 4 Sport paragliding pod harness coming soon!

    I agree with you 100% on the dressing warm. If you start out dress normal working on the surface getting set up doing everything you do walking and you're not too hot, when you take off and fly and sit in that breeze without moving much for hopefully a while when you come back down if you were cold you're going to be kind of stiff and injury prone. If you were just slightly uncomfortably warm while you were flying you were warmed up for that sudden Sprint at the landing less injuries.

    I love you man when you say do everything in your favor to put everything towards safety. I wrote one rule that I call a Red Baron rule because he broke the rules that he wrote and he died for it. Always put your harness all the way on or take your harness all the way off never just unbuckle your legs or any other part if you have to carry it and he distance just throw it all on one shoulder with both straps. If a harness is attached to a wing take it all the way off or put it all the way on the pilot. If we could Hammer that idea home with everybody to make it a point of doing it yourself and teasing other people if you ever see them with a buckle undone on a paraglider harness we could save a life every year.

    From Norway ca 800 h. I do the same as Carlo. When thermaling upwind trying to not fly into sink I keep the circle little oval and push a little longer every turn. Just a second and when I find the strongest sector and try to use more time in the stronger lift and less in the weak lift. I am training on holding the roll and pitch change as smoooth as possible so the vario give better info. I try to push the oval in different direction following the stronger lift. But I have a LOT to learn.

    @6:58 I think the most common risk of injury is during landing, isn't it? But there are boots with cushioning layers, there are some smart bandages that mold to the ankle and harden like the plaster used for casts to provide protection, there are elastic knee guards, and so on.

    @cookiecanfly901 Hey glad you enjoyed the video! 😀 I don't know what the furthest anyone has ever flown XC from Devil's Dyke is but it's not particularly far as we're squeezed by controlled airspace to the north and the sea to the south and east. This means most XCs are crosswind and we run out of land. The furthest I've flown is first cross-downwind to a bit past the Kingsgate Bay Sea Arch in Broadstairs i.e. I ran out of land and flew out to sea a little, which is about 130km straight-line. Then, as the day was still going and I was still high, I turned around and flew back cross-upwind about 30km or so straight-line to eventually land near Canterbury as there's a train station there. I wasn't in any hurry, just enjoying the experience, so the whole flight lasted nearly 7 hours, if I recall correctly. Fun flights like that really stay in my mind! 😀

    @algeriaparagliding9687 Hi 👋 and thanks for the interesting question! 😊 I don't think a vario is essential but for sure a good vario helps me climb better 🙂 especially when the lift is weaker, subtler (e.g. very smooth, no obvious transition between sink and lift) or more broken or tricky. 🤓 If there are other pilots nearby you can use them as varios... but then you will only climb as well as they do! 😉 What do you think? 🤔

    I've tried various, none perfect - far from it. On this flight the support broke mid-flight and I very nearly lost the camera! Luckily I managed to catch it just as it broke off.

    @isaacbuenobadiola9709 ps. In answer to your question, on this flight the camera support I used is the 'Flytec Bumblebee - Universal Camera Bracket (HG+PG)' which is the best all-round support I've found so far. I think it broke (the thread wore out) because I've been using it a lot for several months and giving it a hard time! You can see this mount listed in the 'Radio, Camera & Phone Holders' section of the Flybubble website: flybubble.com/accessories/radio-camera-phone-holders - hope this helps! If anyone has any recommendations for mounting cameras whilst paragliding, please feel free to share them here!

    Something I have to mention here is that adding the significant challenge of filming to the significant and unforgiving challenge of free-flying can be a very serious distraction, known to have caused - or at least importantly contributed to - some serious accidents over the years. So actually I really don't recommend mixing filming and flying for most free-flight pilots. Mounting a camera anywhere - even in more out of the way locations - poses a potential risk of a) distracting and b) catching lines, risers or straps, both on the ground and in the air, with potentially... not good (very bad) consequences. Mounting a camera in less out of the way locations, where things can catch it more easily, should only ever be done by pilots with extremely good wing control skills, able to easily include this serious hazard in their actions. To quantify this more: Only pilots who don't really have to think (much at all) about their wing control, and almost never have any issues with their wings - both on the ground and in the air - should consider filming whilst flying. Pilots who aren't at or very near to 99% success rate should not add filming to the mix. Also pilots should remember that if they are launching and flying with others then it's not just about their own risk: they are also putting others at risk, including bystanders. This is something I am very conscious of every time I do any filming whilst flying, and one of the reasons I often move away from other pilots. Having said this, I have literally thousands of hours ground handling practice (in addition to thousands of hours flying) over nearly 30 years of full-time flying, so I'm pretty confident about my wing control skills and so do also launch and fly amongst others when filming - but only when I judge it's safe for me to do so. Even so, adding filming to the mix definitely poses a serious challenge for me, at times! Hope this helps, sorry if too long and preachy! 🙂

    Convergence clouds Carlo?

  • @flybubblecarlo

    @flybubblecarlo

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes I think there are some sea breeze front convergence clouds to be seen in this video, between the flying site and the coastline e.g. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iZpn26hpn7S9k8o.html

  • @flybubblecarlo

    @flybubblecarlo

    Жыл бұрын

    On this day, after some patient scratching, first I and a bit later a few others managed to get up and into the convergence caused by a sea breeze front type effect i.e. the winds / airflow converging in the area between the roughly south westerly sea breeze and the roughly north westerly prevailing wind around that time. Some luck was definitely involved (some top pilots on high end D and competition wings didn't get up) however on this occasion as it turned out I think my optimism and willingness to be the first to glide out and risk going down paid off - three times in a row, to my happy surprise! I have no doubt that flying a wing with such an exceptional climb rate also helped a lot.
