Flying The Most Underrated GA Airplane!
In this video we take up Skip’s airplane for a spin and I ask him some questions about it. I truly believe this plane is so underrated! It flies like a beauty!

Have you ever seen the JUST LOOK AT THAT guy on youtube? I think he is in the back seat. I would have pulled the circuit breaker feeding his intercom.
I would legitimately never allow that guy in my plane again. I commend the patience of the two guys up front.
Tell the guy in the back seat to talk less on final. I get the feeling he is an instructor and should know this already. I had to remind my instructor a time or two to stfu.
I was a demo, ferry and delivery pilot for a Bellanca dealer based out of Peachtree DeKalb back in the early 70s. I flew the various Viking models and, in 1973, bought a Bellanca Turbo Viking. I flew it all across the US and the Caribbean in nearly any weather you can think of. It was a rock-solid IFR platform, fast and fuel efficient with long legs and built like a brick house. At the time there was a Bellanca Viking on the airshow circuit with a guy doing acrobatic manuevers with a stock (except for the smoke generator) Viking. He was followed up by a young lady doing the same routine. Maintenance was simple (except for the hydraulic gear pump) and very reasonable. I could fly circles around any Bonanza for a fraction of the cost. A great airplane in every element.

Really? How fast did that Bellanca go?
@StevieWonder737
3 жыл бұрын
@@gringoloco8576 The turbo (17-31atc) could get 200 ktas in the 17000-FL190 range at about 16gph. The Lycoming (17-31) was around 160ktas and the Continental (17-30) was about 155 ktas on about 13-14gph

That guy was Corkey Fornof, BTW Bobby Bishop also did a airshow routing in the Viking

Great video minus the distraction in the rear seat.

Man no kidding!
Remember working on one in the early 90’s. The owner had hydraulic leaks under the floor. A real PITA to fix . I also did a bunch of dope work on the wings.The owner felt sorry for me so he brought me up for a ride. Its a lively airplane to fly. 300hp if memory serves me correctly. It gets up and goes!! Yes, the guy in the backseat is a PITA too!!
Great plane great piloting. Guy in the back acting as a random noise generator needs to go.

Dude was the “know it all father in law” who ruins everything.
This flight could have benefited from sterile cockpit. It is not as common in GA but airliners practice it every flight. It helps prevent unnecessary excess chatter in the cockpit. Also, the guy in back should know that the cockpit is not a good classroom. Skip was providing good guidance but the guy in back had no place talking as much as he did. Two captains in a cockpit is a dangerous cockpit.

We have a 17-30. Very economical for the ground speed. Solid as a rock in any conditions
It’s nice to see that the actor who played “bubble boy” on Seinfeld got himself a backseat ride in this great-looking airplane…..
I think the instructor insisted on the "back-seater" to see how the student could fly under pressure. He did a great job!

A friend of a friend took me for a ride in his BSV about 10-12 years ago. It was a very memorable experience because it just flew so smoothly......especially after hopping out of a super decathlon straight into the Viking. I absolutely loved that airplane! You have a beautiful aircraft, and the video was great as well!

Great video Luke. Love that plane. I’ve always consider it the 1966 Corvette of the air. The dancer on the glareshield is a nice touch Skip. Seems like I remember some fuzzy dice there not that long ago. All three of you guys are proof that aviation begins at the local flight school. Well done.

Back seat flyer? "Hey, turn left here. I gotta pick up a Slurpee."
Very nice airplane . One of my favorite for sure . It seems to be fairly light for it's size. I worked for a FBO for a long long time and retired from there.We always tried to get a/c onto a tie down and secure it . I could tell the difference when moving these.Looks from the outside seem to show a lot of room inside . Nice airplane.Beautiful colors to.We had a blue/white striping painted tail dragger that set for years and was never flown in my 20 years + being out there.I always thought to myself what a shame it was to end up like that . Great video . Glad to see a Viking so nice airborne.
I think you are onto something special here. Really well done both in production value and content. Keep up the great work, looking forward to seeing your channel and pilot career grow. 👍

Guy in back “Nice Skip”...um, at 9:24, looks like the left-seater was providing some “assistance “. Nice plane! I had forgotten about this make.
The ones that know GA aviation knows that this is a great aviation. It is underrated because the ignorant thing airplane having parts made out of wood and fabric is "old" yea, in the culture of "old" is the same as bad, there you go. I am glad it is underrated, this way it's left for the ones that know how to fly a great machine! LOL

When I sold Bellancas back in the 1970s we had a demo of two small sections of a wing on a Bonanza and a Bellanca. Took at 1" metal ball to simulate hail and dropped it from about a foot. Big dent in the Bonanza and bounced off the Bellanca piece without a mark. Bellanca was built stronger ... another item was a picture of the Kilgore Rangerettes seated on the wings. 8 on each wing. Just an honest, strong aircraft.
Pilot Iso switch is awesome...
I flew Vikings in a charter op. They are fast, have a fabulously light ailerons, fun to fly and look great but....are LOUD inside, and being very heavy have a crummy useful load. I mean a really, really crummy useful load. I agree with others about the bla bla bla from the back seat. A distraction.

Had to deliver a viking from San Diego to Bethel Alaska. Great to fly fast but would rather own an A-36 Bonanza.
Motormouth in the back talking way to much on final. Very distracting to the PF He hasn’t heard of a sterile cockpit ( conversation pertinate to operation of the aircraft ,decent, approach and landing ). I would think every pilot would remember their first solo and the total hours to solo. I remember mine after 62 years

It isn’t a “pilots license”! It’s called a “pilot certificate “
Way to loud of music. Can hardly hear anyone talk over it
The Vike is a great single person plane but unless you weigh in less than 120 pounds each, there's just no comfort room up front for two.
@Franklin-pc3xd
3 жыл бұрын
@Biggus Dickus - not really - I'm referring to comfort - i.e. the interior beam of the aircraft at the front seats. Let's put it this way... anyone with a name like biggus dickus probably won't be comfortable in a front seat next to, say, someone named big pussy. As to cg, that's easy to check via the AOM.

And superior to aluminum in SO MANY ways. The issue was that the wood/fabric construction costs were higher due to hand-built labor. That's what killed it. The steel roll-cage body frame is FAR stronger and more protective than the beer-can product at Beech, Cessna and Piper.
I hate to ask this, but who is the loudmouth in the back seat?? He couldn't keep his mouth shut! Spoiled the whole thing.
Wood wing? Nope *edit* I really like this plane though, just don't have my experience with wood wings
@Douganchesner
2 жыл бұрын
The wings on the cruisair to Viking series bellancas are generally stronger pound for pound than metal wings. Wood did pretty well on the DeHavilland Mesquite eh? Don’t let them sit out in the elements and they require minimal care and also benefit aerodynamically by not needing rivets which add parasite drag.
Who’s the backseat pilot giving instruction? Very annoying.
