Flying the Mooney to Thanksgiving: Coldest Flight Ever (for me)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this flight, I learned that winter flying in the northeast is much more complicated than I originally expected. Instead of a 7-8 hour drive from Ford City, PA to Saint Johnsville, NY, I elected to fire up the Mooney for a slightly over 2 hour flight. Unfortunately, I was not prepared for this to be the coldest flight I had ever encountered and the extra steps needed to get the plane ready almost made me wish I had just drove. The flight back the next day was completely at night which was not well recorded by my camera, but that flight back was great and it made it all worthwhile.

Kj is right Mooneys have cabin heat You close the side vents and pull the knob and the inside warms up quick!!

Funny thing was I had the cabin heat on full! It was making my toes warm but that was about it!

Odd. The heater in my 67F model that will cook the front seat passengers if the blend valve is mismanaged. Would you say the heater in your plane is effective under most [less extreme] conditions? I’ve never seen my breath like that in flight.

Was on the fence over having insulation or saving weight.. You may have convinced me to go for comfort.

I guess it depends on where you live. Also keep in mind this was with an airplane that had the insulation.

Good video. One of my favorite flights was a thanksgiving flight in 2007 that was similar to your flight other than flying with my family.

Wow! What are you flying. Kind of looked like a Piper but then again, it didn't. Doesn't that thing have Cabin Heat?

Christopher, thanks for commenting! Its a '63 Mooney M20C, and yes it has very good heat that comes out under the intrument panel, but it wasn't doing much at -20F that day!

What a cool video. No pun intended. I'm getting a bit of a Matthew Posa vibe from you and that guy has millions and millions of views. kzread.info/dash/bejne/loiau6ewmsfTiqg.html. Hope you keep making more content and I hope to see that mooney painted one day. That said, it looks pretty badass as it is.
