Flying Formation The USAF Way | Tactical Turns | Part 4 | DCS

Formation flying isn't just done in straight lines. Sometimes you'll need to turn the flight. Here's how to do it the right way.
We'll cover some useful turns here including:
1. Delayed turns
2. Hook turns
3. Cross turns
Once you understand these you should be able to turn with a flight without it looking haphazard and chaotic.

    I was kinda expecting you’d explain how to fly a Shackle after a Crossturn, to deal with the (often) wide spacing after the 180. Not meant as criticism though! Just what I was expecting. Great videos!

    There are a couple other things I want to add for formations. This is a good suggestion to throw in there with those other things.

    0:44 I thought zippering the mic was a double tap of the comms button. Does zippering the mic mean something else?

    Yes, they’re the same thing, we call it the “zipper click”

    "Zipper" is just the nick name for those repeated mic clicks.

    Can you demonstrate tha 45 degree turn? Curious how that plays out due to the small initial correction, in opposite direction of the turn.

    It's just like the delayed 90. The only real catch is if you use a visual signal for it. Since it shares the same visual signal as a delayed 90 it is possible the wingman will go through the entire 90 degree turn. That why there's a caveat about radio use. But that should only ever come up with the wingman on the outside of the turn. If Lead turns first then Wing should be watching and see that Lead rolls out at 45 instead of turning all the way to a 90. Personally, I don't like using the delayed 45 but I wanted to share it since inevitably someone would ask what comes between a 30 degree check turn and a 90 degree turn. In DCS (as in real life) you might never have to actually do a delayed 45. But I wanted to share it just in case someone wanted to know. Hope that answers your question.

    Sorry for the delay in responding. That turn is optional. From the publication "the wingman maneuvers as required to achieve a tactical position on the other side of lead’s aircraft by either delaying the turn until lead crosses the 6 o’clock position or by immediately maneuvering to the other side of lead." So you can fly ahead if that works or turn if its required to get the geometry to work out. Either way you don't want to pass above or below the other aircraft.

    The hook turns always give me problems. The guy on the outside of the turn always ends up in trail instead of abeam.

    Whenever I work with folks new to tactical turns the problems usually fall into one of two areas. 1. Someone is out of place when the turn starts. 2. Someone didn't adhere to the turn contract. In other words: MIL power, maintain altitude, pull enough G to maintain airspeed. When power and speed settings change it changes the path you take in the turn. So my guess is it's one of those two. Hopefully, this helps.

    @@TheOpsCenterByMikeSolyom I can't recall the metrics off hand, but I think it was MIL and certain AoA in the particular aircraft/scenario I was in. I'm pretty sure I hit those numbers, but my training partner was AI and I never bothered to record TacView of the session, so maybe that "someone" in this instance was the AI.
