Flying baby dolls.... the Coanda effect in action
Flying balls were fun until I discovered there were all sorts of other objects that can be levitated in a stream of air that are much more interesting and challenging. To begin I followed a few simple rules: 1. objects cannot be supported by strings, 2. touch other surfaces, 3. objects must be able to be supported in airstream for at least 15 seconds. In this video, shop vacs or an air compressor provides the air stream to fly these babies. In previous videos I have flying carrots, cucumbers, spoons, footballs, pigs, to name a few. In a future I hope to post additional interesting household objects that I never expected would work.

“The air flow follows the curve of the baby’s head” is a hilarious sentence

If you find that funny, how about this one: If I let go of an apple it falls.
So if it's the general curved shape of the head that makes this work, how strong would the air stream need to be for this to work on a real baby? Hypothetically speaking, for science research purposes only, of course.
Everytime you post a video about this, it blows my mind that it works. Thanks for sharing, Bruce!
Love that you specified “on loan” 😂
Mr. Floatato Head!
Thank you Bruce. Master Class as always
Amazing experiment. Thank you.
What a brilliant experiment. Thanks for the video.
Demented, yet fun 👍
This is a good experiment
1:12 That landing tho!!!
Thank you mr. Yeany for another great science lesson!
Excellent, I knew nothing of the Coandă effect until I was building the Hughes NOTAR helicopter back in the 1980s. Wish all teachers taught like you, keep up the great work.
miraculous!
My kids are too heavy now, I’d need a real high pressure air line! 😂
Hmm. I’m bald, I just need a powerful enough compressor, and hope it doesn’t scalp me 😂

My friend, you not only have to be bald you have to be absolutely shiny bald and need at least leader skin not only that your body should be mostly hollow or very light weight on top of that your head must be disproportionately bigger then your body. Oh and the neck has to be rigid like a stump🤔 then yes it would work like a breeze 😁👌.
Imagine a demonic doll hovering as a Halloween prop. Now that would be cool!
Anyone got a real baby to lend the man?
👏👏😮
Will you put on neck brace and helmet and try this on yourself? If too heavy get bigger helmet.
Could a vehicle be made that can generate a coanda effect large enough to hold itself in the air?
it's so strange that it's stable.
Can you upgrade the air supply and get a real baby to float?
That's 'cursed' as the kids say
I trying to do that experiment at home to show it to my children, but i don't get a Baby Doll to a float. What pressuere did you use and what size of jet?
Hey Bruce, could you show this phenomenon with an accurate human body like a Action figure where the proportion are right/accurate? A Barbie Doll is not accurate enough with that large Hydrocephalus head 😂
The Coanda effect changes the direction of the air and takes out the vertical component, it no longer goes up and sideways, just sideways, the upward momentum/energy of the air is transferred to the doll. So it is the Coanda effect "pulling" it up instead of the air beneath it pushing it up. The air underneath doesn't care which way the air stream is turned by the doll.

I would think your explanation disregards Bernoullis principle, in your explanation then a fast moving stream of air blowing directly across a flat surface would not create any lift

There is no such force as "suction" or "pulling", only differential pressure. In this case the lower pressure on top allows the the higher ambient pressure underneath to push up and levitate the baby doll. Try this in a vacuum chamber and it wont work. Simply put, your explanation "sucks".
