Very glad to see this.... i live in the country and my only option for internet is about 6mb and its capped at 60gb so i thought this game was a no go for me!! recently built a 4080 based desktop and cant wait to try this!!! the last time i played this was on a 1050ti and the frame rate was horrible even on the lowest settings!!!

New subsciber here, I appreciate your video. I just recently got a xbox series x and I'm very excited for the console version of flight simulator! My family and I have very slow dsl internet and it's the only choice of isp in our neighborhood. Cable companies avoid our street like the plague or something. Anyways, here's hoping for a great experience on xbox series x and s! 9 more days until launch!

For folks who find this video because they just want to know how to make this work and were hoping to find the explanation in the description instead of having to search through a video: start MSFS with internet (any way you can) then go to options -> general -> data, and turn online functionality off. This will now at least let you get into MSFS when you're offline, either because you genuinely don't have internet or, you're running steam in offline mode (which the Steam version of MSFS is tied to for some incomprehensible reason).

Dude mine...for no reason at all...the box is gray and it's stuck on "on"... Like it won't even give me the choice to go in offline mode. Which is great because I bought the game specifically to play offline.

After the Japan update my manual cache doesn’t work. Cache a region it crashes to desktop every single time

I may be cutting my home wifi soon, due to a large cost increase. I do have MS Flight sim X already installed. If I cannot cache areas, how does MSFS 2020 offline look compared to Flight sim X? Is FS2020 offline good enough to warrant a purchase, even though I have FSX? Or are they almost the same GFX quality wise?

Excellent, concise video - you're a clever man - thanks for posting, it's appreciated. Microsoft should be advertising these facts as it opens the simulation up to those with poor internet connectivity etc, or those who run air gapped PCs. If MS don't? They could lose potential customers. Watching with interest.

Well I didn't pay my bill cause I missed one payment on line xbox live. And now I can't fly the sim at all even off line? I get stuck at the, what I like to call " never ending circle of death " It shouldn't be this way I don't really understand I don't and think it is selfish of company to do this. How to turn off Microsoft Flight Sim updates SO I can play it offline without constant interruptions…… If I plan to play it offline, then it makes no sense to force the user to update.

Hmm. So in order to play without a connection, you need a connection, and then download cache scenery. It would be more useful to test a region without cache, and also be able to launch from a situation where connections are suddenly down.

You can turn off "rolling cache" and it will revert the sim to the default scenery. You don't need to download any scenery to play the game. It will look kind of look like Xplane does out of the box. Maybe a tad better. If you can make a flight or two with internet it will save those areas into the rolling cache and use them again the next time you fly in offline mode. And it will look exactly like it did in online mode, as long as you stay in that area. And you will need internet at some point just to get the game unless you live in the UK. And it is about a 90 gb download to get the game. They have it on disk but for whatever reason they are only releasing those in the UK. It has also already been cracked and you can get it for free. Took about a day and half for someone to pirate it lol.

@@biteme263 This isn't true. Default scenery in this game doesn't look anything like X Plane, or even a tad better. I have both. It's massively better. It's like comparing an early ps3 game to a late ps4 game.

Question though, when you download the core base game, is the whole world already pre-rendered into the game or do you have to feed it with more world information online? yes I know you have to be online for more accurate world info, but I just want to know if a preset render of the world is already in the game.

There is already a basic render of the world included. The original download is close to 100GB.

If you never put it in online mode to download any satalite scenery the default scenery looks a bit like out of the box Xplane. It is playable and looks ok, but it doesn't look as stunning as the pictures you see on the internet. And VFR flying will be a bit harder because the ground won't be nearly as accurate.

in order for this to work if you have flown over that area at any point while having an internet connection you will need to turn off "rolling cache" in the data menu. This will revert it to the default scenery in the sim. Otherwise it is just going to pull the data from your rolling cache and it will look like it did when you had internet.

I wonder if you need to increase your manual cache size. Or maybe your hard drive is out of room. Those are the only things I can think of. The only time I've had red with this is when I hold ctrl and right click in order to delete a portion of the cache. But that just creates a red outline.

Ok, this video is not a completely accurate representation of offline mode for a first time user. It looked really good because at one point you had internet and you must have flown over that location. When you do this it will load those areas into the rolling cache. When you go into offline mode it will use that rolling cache to play the game. So basically it will look and perform just like it did when you were online. If you fly to an area you haven't been, or if you never had internet to begin with it will look different. It will be the defualt scenery for the sim which looks a lot like what you will see with an out of the box version of Xplane. Maybe a little better. The upside to this is if you have internet but don't want to use it all the time you can use online mode to go fly over areas you want to fly in. That will load them into the rolling cache. Then go into offline mode so you are not using data. And as long as you fly in the same areas it will look just as good as it did while you were online. You also lose the voice ATC function and you won't have any of the live features like live air traffic and live weather. So you really don't have to mess with the manual cache set up. Which is good because it is kind of broke and a pain in the butt to use. For starters manual cache only works with the 3D photogrammetry stuff or whatever its called. It doesn't recognize normal sat images. So it only works with cities and more populated areas that have mapped with that system. Rural areas are pretty much a no go. So if you live in the middle of no where Michigan like I do you can forget about manual cache lol. It will download it, the sim just won't recognize it and use it. Also when using the manual cache and setting up your areas in order to get medium and high resolution you have to zoom in on the map. The more you zoom in the resolution changes from low, to medium to high. Which means if you want a large area in high resolution its it is time consuming and a pain to select it all. Not to mention the more you select the slower your computer gets and will eventually turn into a potato lol.

Thanks, I appreciate the comment. That was definitely not where I wanted to showcase, however I was kind of limited because that was the only online footage I had at the time (and I had no internet to get a better online shot). Will redo it with better footage in the near future.

Would it be possible to cache download the entire earth for offline, Call me a dreamer but i will be happy in 10 years when i have a self contained high quality ssd flight simulator of the entire planet and maybe it runs on a laptop lol

so if I wanna cache all 2 peta bytes, all I need is 2 million gigabyte solid state drives, So if ya filled up each drive in an hour, it would only take you 220 years to get the whole thing done. Geeesh, I better get started.

I am not sure. I would imagine that this would be a huge file. I'm just creating a video that goes a bit further into the manual cache. There are three levels of cache. Low medium and high. Low is pretty easy to download. I downloaded a small area in Italy and it was only just over a megabyte. I did the same on medium. Which ended up as 15 mb. Did the same on high and the file size was close to a GB. And that was probably about 10 km square.

@@VRFlightWorld Ouch, a high level cache would be quite massive without some sort of compression then. Although 3d data is going to be different in different areas, assuming it does take 1gb for 10 square kilometers on average, you'd be looking at 59,000tb of data. Of course, realistically it isn't necessary to do that as most of earth's surface is just water though. Bing's map doesn't have 3d data for many areas in the world so the game actually AI generated most of the cities based on other data which is still really impressive in its own right but I would imagine that there is a difference in cache size between cities that have actual 3d data and those that don't.

Yes. I tried a smaller city with no 3d data. (100 thousand people) and covered the city with high quality cache. It was a much lower file size. I believe it was under 100 mb for a much larger but less dense area.

It only works with the 3d mapped areas anyway, like cities and stuff. So you can't manual cache the whole world anyway. I mean you can, it just won't use it in the sim as of yet. Manual cache is kind of broken at the moment. Not to mention the more you select the slower you computer gets. And it is around 2 PB of data. So you would need 2,000 1 tb drives to do it. Not to mention you would probably die before you actually got it all downloaded.

This is misleading, as you are looking at pre-cached areas, an obviously you can't precache the whole world. It would be more useful to show without cache - just autogen and basic ground textures, no satellite data.

What is your pcs specs and monitor used ? Pls update in links

The graphics card is great. I've been running at medium to high and if it wasn't for my CPU I think I could run at Ultra. Still playing with the settings to see where things settle. I think an upgrade on the CPU would be nice. Cause my graphics card is running a bit low at times and my CPU is working hard. But this sim looks amazing even on lower settings. It's not a dramatic difference like some of the sims we have used in the past.

I'm not sure I can help you there. I would think that will be personal preference. Unless you are going to a 4k monitor. That would obviously be harder on your graphics card. Sorry i can't be much more help on that one.

Have you found any problems when rendering trees at low/none internet? I have kinda bad connection (45-60mbps) and my trees partly disappear and start flashing always when i render them. Tried to switch rendering settings and graphics settings but it didn't help:( my pc specs should be close to RECOMMENDED specs.

That's odd. I haven't seen that with my sim. I'll watch for it. If I see it happen and find a solution I will throw up a video. I would imagine there will be a few bugs that will be fixed in the next little while.

@@VRFlightWorld Yeah, tell me if you find a solution. I have also contacted to flight simulator support so they can investigate and fix it. I think it is somekind of bug but no one else has experienced it when i did research for fixes.

That's too bad. If you wanted to go the extreme you could try a full reinstall....but that is not fun. I would also try reducing all the settings to a bare minimum to see how things run. Maybe there is one setting that is working against you.

I'm not sure at this point. Haven't tested the difference yet. I would assume it makes a small difference however that is just a guess.

It doesn't, at all. I tested it. It doesn't matter if you fly in offline mode, or online mode or use the default sim scenery you get about the same performance. I actually a few less fps using the default scenery lol. Now if you have a poor internet connection it might effect how smooth the scenery loads and the quality level of it.

What i did is downloaded the cracked version to bypass everything (yes i did pay the $80)

Nope, has no effect on it. I tested it. Online or offline I get the same exact peformance. Same fps and same sutters and hitches, in the same exact places. And I actually got a few less fps using the default scenery which makes no sense to me.

It won't even let me turn online functionality off...the box is gray and stuck on "On"....I've spent over 20 hours downloading this stupid fckin game because my internet is shit and I just want to play it offline and it won't let me and I've done almost everything and for whatever reason it won't let me switch it to offline mode. It also said I need the offline mode files....THAT I HAVE DOWNLOADED ON THE CONSOLE. -_- Thanks microsoft...you've successfully robbed me and i can't even play the game.
