Fly Tying the Green Machine salmon/steelhead fly with Barry Ord Clarke
One of the great Canadian surface flies for salmon and steelhead. As you are probably aware I'm a sucker for deer hair patterns and this is one of my favorites for salmon and sea run browns.

Barry, thanks for the fascinating tying lesson. The use of tape, lighter, and a handful of tips are very helpful for my spinning.
I am from New Brunswick, Canada where the green machine originated and it is very interesting to see how you tie this: here we usually tie with 6/0 black thread, the florescent green butt we typically tie in use nylon floss, the red is usually red floss and there is no tail. If a green machine has a glitter tail it is known as a "glitter bug" and could be any color body. I really enjoy the way you tie it and may do this going forward!
Just in absolute awe watching you! I don't fly fish at all but I can watch your videos all day. What a craftsman!
Your deer hair bodies are always so nicely done. They seem to be very consistent in their density which probably translates to them fishing well.. Thanks again, sir.
I get a sense of zen watching you do this. I have never tied flies, but I want to now. These creations are beautiful.
Wonderful as always. You’ve helped my deer spinning immensely. Thanks sir!
Wow you make spinning deer hair look so easy. I tried an even simpler Irresistible last night and it was a mess! Thank you for making these. They are a big help.
A work of art!
I really need to lose my deer hair fear and start tying more flies with hair. But first I’ll order the razor blade holder that you use. Enjoyed the lesson thank you sir
Interesting, here we use white deer hair dyed green not brown dyed green! The fly is mostly tied the same but the colour
A very productive pattern on the West Coast of BC. I might add it floats like a cork and does a splendid job of disturbing the surface as it is stripped. This is a top shelf quality tie!
oddly enough, I just received my blade holder from Stonfo this morning. a great tool indeed, I can't wait until tomorrow to do my muddlers and try this great Green machine.
I enjoyed that.
Very nice
Great video again. Thank you
Interesting variant but not a Green Machine. The Green Machine is tied with a green body to mimic the large green grasshoppers we get here in New Brunswick in summer. I knew the originator of this pattern.
Another interesting pattern here Barry. I’m still ‘afraid’ of deer hair! lol. One day..... Thank you for another one dude.
Really I like that pattern. I live in Argentina and I think that fly can work in the Rio Grande for the sea run brown trouts. Congratulations for this lesson. I need to get the blade holder. Best regards
Juste let you know the green machine, well....are green and this pattern have a name by itself
Very neat and clear instructions , but I have never used a green machine before, is this a type of dry fly? And how do you use it . Thanks
