Fly Tying Starter Kit: Everything You Need To Tie Your Own Flies
Ойын-сауық
Want to start tying your own flies?
Today we've got Insider member and former Orvis Instructor, Joe Sherer, giving us a tour of his fly tying room.
He's been tying flies for many years and has a range of tools and materials from $20 vices to $200 vices, but today he's going to share with you what you need (and what you don't need) to get started with tying your own flies.
You'll learn:
- which tools you need to start tying your flies, and about how much they cost
- what materials you need to get started, and where to get them (hint: fly tying shops are not the best place to get materials)
- how to save money on your fly tying journey
- and much more
If you're looking to start tying your own flies, you're going to love this video.
Have any questions about the materials and tools you'll need for fly tying?

No one one the entire internet has made this info public on Fly tying material alternatives this is awesome stuff. and as a participating Salt Strong member this content was a game changer for me . Also for those of us who watched carefully could also get a good look at how things are organized and how the desk is set up as well. Very solid and valuable info especially for someone like me is is just getting into the sport and is blown away about the price of some the equipment and supplies involved with fly fishing. Thank You so much for sharing this info. I feel like I owe someone a beer. 🤫 🥴👍🏽

Great question! Make sure to ask this over in the Community (www.saltstrong.com/) where the coaches spend their time.
Thanks for the tips on saving money. Still find it ironic that you spend $200 on a vice and $30 on scissors, but worry about splurging on $3 items.

@@channelname8623 realistically, have you tried DIY-ing your flies? Did you find any material/s that helped your catches at all? I'm thinking of doing this for my partner but he is picky. And I'm not sure if I want to make something that will smell or look off to hungry fish :)
Coming from someone who started tying flies about a year ago, buy a rotary fly vice! Save yourself a headache and having to buy another vice later. Peak, Renzetti or DynaKing.

Phaselight I personally and totally agree, however I have heard throughout the years of people who have gotten in too deep just to realize that they didn’t want to spend the time it took to learn. My idea was to give people an inexpensive way of discovering if this is something they would like to try. If you’re anything like me, and it sounds kinda like you are, as time goes by you might find an even better vice at a great price that you want to try. I currently have 4 vices set up in my fly tying room for friends to use and for drying flies and for showing the various stages of tying flies. But I have more vices in reserve for when I travel or go to clubs to put on a demonstration. Thanks for your comments.🙂
My brother is said you were a cheapskate
