Fly Tying a Pink Squirrel - Classic American Nymph Pattern

Спорт

Created by John Bethke (circa early 2000s) of Westby, WI, the Pink Squirrel has found popularity throughout the Driftless region (and the west in general). A simple but effective fly, the pattern is thought to be a general attractor nymph or possibly even a scud.
Hook: #10-16 heavy scud
Bead: Gold, sized to match hook
Thread: Brown
Weight: Wire, sized to match hook
Tail: Krystal flash
Rib: Red wire
Body: Squirrel fur (with amber Sparkle Yarn if desired)
Collar: Pink chenille (or fur on the smaller sizes)
Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tips or tricks that could help me or anyone else watching.

I'm from Minnesota and have fished this fly ever since it became popular all across the Driftless Region. It's a killer. I even brought it out to Montana and Wyoming and it was a killer there, too. I think of it as a sort of buggy day-glo peeking caddis.

I’ll have to try this one. Looks pretty easy to tie. Still needing to order some beads and cone heads. Thank you Matt.

That spikey squirrel body makes this fly a winner.

Holy cow, I can't imagine landing any steelhead on a #16, much less 6x! What's your typical tippet when steelhead fishing? Do you go as big as a 2x or does it depend on what flies your fishing?

@@SavageFlies i definitely didn't land it or the 7 others I lost that day. I was shocked that the big boys we're already in the river, i was just euronymphing for dinks and bam fresh chromers everywhere. I was also surprised it had taken the pink squirrel and not the egg trailer. For steelhead I run 20 yds of 20lb chameleon to a tippet ring, then 0x to 4x depending on the river clarity. I have definitely found that the lighter i go i get way more hookups, but in turn i loose way more fish...if i had to pick only 1 size..id go with 3x...4 is my favorite, but i loose a lot on that

@@rgr798 Great info! Thanks for the tips. I've still never been steelhead fishing, but it's on my to-do list for as soon as I can make it happen. :-)

This was a very cool one. I liked how that small ball turned out to be the head, and it looks more like a shrimp than a squirrel lol. Also found it interesting that you added some weight to it at the beginning! Thank you Matt!!
