    I've got a cheap little 500mm foamy dollar store glider converted into an rc motor glider. If the wind is blowing hard it's the one I'm reaching for. It's only 100g so it gets manhandled by the wind at slow speeds but throttle up and bit, point it into the wind and the game is to use slope soaring techniques to keep it just in front of you. Zig zag left and right. Huge sweeping barrel rolls and loops for days feels like surfing in the wind. Cutting the throttle just before the top of a loop and finishing with a hard back on the elevator makes for a fast on the spot flip losing almost no altitude. Super fun If its heading in the right direction for any of my local hills then I'll pull out the slope glider and see how long I can stay up. It's always windy here, so it's best to just learn to fly in it.

    One of my best days flying was also the windiest. I didn't know what I was getting myself into until I was above the tree line. Fortunately I had a couple of hardcore folks who also showed up. They offered encouragement and I managed to get in a couple flights without any mishaps.

    Best way to learn? Fly gliders on the slope. Get good and if you can fly when it's 20-30mph, do so. It will teach you to work with the wind and not try to fight it, certainly don't fear it.

    Slope soarers are a good example case of deliberately adding ballast for higher winds to increase wind loading to drive more into wind.

  • @Videolinquency
    @Videolinquency Жыл бұрын

    This is invaluable information. But I think a nearly universal R/C misconception should be addressed first: RC-ers tend to think the ground has some occult influence on our models; we talk of 'downwind stalls' or 'upwind turns' as if the model knew what the ground was doing underneath it. If we were taught to relate our flying craft to the air they fly in, not to the ground we stand on, we would understand these tutorials better. Another dark corner is the difference between wind and turbulence. Coping with laminar wind is a question of airspeed and geometry, while coping with turbulence is a question of wing loading. That distinction is not very well understood by R/C pilots with no full scale background. Thanks a lot for your content, I have enough theoretical, R/C and full scale perspective to see that your videos are exactly what our R/C community needs. A true water fountain in a desert!

    Had a blast flying my home made sub 250 gram wing in 20-25mph winds when they suddenly showed out of nowhere and blew my hat off. A real oh crap moment. my final approach was at a standstill above the ground yet the plane still felt very touchy as if nowhere near its stall speed.

  • @TailHeavyProductions

    That's awesome! Yep, the headwind acts as additional airspeed which is why "losses" of wind on final can be dangerous when landing. Something important to remember is that a wing can stall at any airspeed. -Zach
