Fly Fishing the Yellowstone River for Cutthroat Trout!

Спорт

I was super lucky to end up in Yellowstone National Park just after the Yellowstone River opened for the season so took the opportunity to fish for some native Cutthroat Trout!
If you want to learn more and book a guided session on the water visit:

The most amazing thing to me is your ability to wade that river! That was incredible the way you moved up and down in that current over structure and so forth. I have been in that river and know a bit about how strong the current is. My hat is off to you! Thanks for the great video.

I had thought, watching a couple other videos of Yellowstone area fishing, that there weren't many fish better than say 12, 13 inches. I watched one guy who just refused to use nymphs only catch juvenile fish. But clearly, there's a significant number of serious size fish too. I had no idea, makes me want to visit there some day even more. I'd be happy chasing little trout but to know there's quite a lot of large cutties is encouraging stuff. Truly beautiful water and nature at it's finest. We can only wish we could make things so beautiful. But I simply love the chase of a big trout to avoid obstacles and what not, those are the most fun memories. You got 2 big ones in the net and had a great fight with another and lost another, you can't say that's a bad trip. For me, even if you lose one after a chase, it's so fun and worth it. But admittedly, it sure does punch you a little more when you do so much to land a fish only to lose it. But with success comes failure and that's why I try to just be glad even when I lose a beauty. It's part of fishing, you just will never land every fish.

Bro I live in gardiner. If you stick to the parks lakes the fish avg. About 20 inches.. biggest fish I've seen in the park was a 31" lake trout outta shoshone lake.. but fish the yellowstone lake. The fish avg about this size.. they cruise the shore post up anywhere witg structure and some depth. Aim for mid to late june.

Glad you were able to experience catching some cutties! They are a super cool native fish to the west USA and it's neat to see you getting to experience that. Thanks for sharing. Also, whoever said cutthroat don't fight hard was very mistaken. When they are healthy like that, and the water is cold they offer great fun at the end of a line.

They fight like brook trout, from what I see. I never caught a cutthroat because I never have been out west. But brook trout sometimes don't fight much and just thrash around and I've seen cutties do the same thing at times. I think that's why they get that reputation from some people but it's always nonsense. Plus, I know sometimes rainbow trout don't fight hard for me, they just lazily swim and don't run or jump and slowly are pulled to the net. There's not many species that don't have some lazy individuals among them. Plus, in the end, if a fish doesn't work it's ass off fighting it's actually better for the fish entirely so long as the angler isn't harvesting them.

The Yellowstone was running very high in July, so I didn't bother to go there to fish. Opening day was moved up from the normal ( July 15 ) to July 1, I think. Were you there at the beginning of July? I'm going back to the area in a couple of days and was thinking of fishing that river and possibly Yellowstone Lake. In any case, congrats on your successful fishing day.
