Fly Fishing the Fall River, Central Oregon

These gorgeous Redband Trout are plentiful, but very difficult to catch. Took me some time to figure it out...but when I finally did, I was rewarded with some monster trophy fish on the fly rod!

Fly fishing for trout, fly fishing for Cutthroat in the Pacific Northwest has been a passion of mine for the last 40 years. I have spent most of my life fly fishing the great Pacific Northwest to include fly fishing in Alaska, fly fishing in Washington, fly fishing in Oregon, fly fishing in Idaho and fly fishing in Montana. I generally will fly fish and practice catch and release when fly fishing for trout, but I have been known to catch and cook during camping trips to many of my favorite fishing spots. I love to fly fish lakes in the higher elevation, though I have a few lowland lakes that are fly fishing only that are also on my most favorite list. I have a ton experience fly fishing rivers for trout and always enjoy discovering new rivers to fly fishing in and around the greater Pacific Northwest. I am also an accomplished at casting a fly rod - whether it is fly fishing casting for distance, fly fishing casting for accuracy, the double haul, roll cast, tower cast and many more fly fishing casting techniques - I can show you the basics when it comes to casting a fly rod. I also will cover many topics that relate to getting started with fly fishing. From your basic fly fishing setups, flies and fly boxes - we cover all the fly fishing needs for beginners. Thanks for taking the time to tune into FlyFishDan and I hope you consider subscribing to my fly fishing channel. Cheers and FISH-ON!!!

I have fished here many times. There are fish a hell of a lot larger then 20 inches in there. It's the kinda place you work all day for 1 or 2 takes if your good......
Those Redbands are absolutely gorgeous. I am really enjoying your content. tight lines.

Fished there last summer, my flies barely got acknowledged by the hoard of fish by the bridge haha! Excellent video and amazing quality, I can't wait to go back and try my luck again!

Those were very nice fish. It looks like an Oregon fishin trip is in order. God Bless n fish on!
It's so fun to watch you fish waters I use all the time. I've found I get good use from my 7ft 3wt on the Fall as casting out far is rarely needed. I saw a gal catch her first fish ever up there a few weeks ago. So fun.

Thank you John - I had a little fun experimenting with that battling the fish...afterwards I thought...why would I risk doing that (one handed) on a trophy fish! Lol Glad it worked out :))
Dan you get an A for effort on this one, you the man.

I have flyfished for 30 years but I started Tightline (Euro) nymphimg two years ago. It single handedly has changed fishing for me for ever. I have caught not only more trout but the biggest trout in my life with this method. It has given me confidence, and that has lead me into other methods (Stillwater, Streamers, dry's etc.) of fly fishing. I continue to learn more and more to become well rounded but, "Euro nymphing" was the door that opened it all for me. Great video, I have had the Fall & Metoleous on my radar for about a year now. Hoping to get up there end of October. Gotta love those Redbands!

Thanks for taking the time to watch - I do appreciate it!
I always associated euro nymphing rods with fast water, and plan to get one soon. I guess I'll have go reevaluate my preconceptions! Great underwater video! This type of spring fed clear water/slow flow, sight type fishing is intimidating to me. I'm learning alot from your videos, Dan, really appreciate it!

Thanks William - my pleasure! I appreciate you being a part of my channel!
Lived there at the hatchery and learned to fly fish right in front of the hatchery, back in the 90's, used to pull dinner almost every time I fished.
That looked fun. Nice job

Thank you! I know right! Such a TANK...so glad I pulled up the wader straps and pulled out the Euro rod...so effective!
You were right. I hooked into 2 of these bad boys. Both on the dry. I got a couple at the hatchery too but that kind of felt like cheating. The big boys all lined up in the feeding lanes at "that one spot" was amazing to see. Thanks for the tip. This river is now on my annual visit list.

Great job Dan! I hope I can have a little bit of luck when I head there later this week. I've got pink streamers to strip in, pheasant tail nymphs to drift, plenty of dries , hoping for a few tight lines!! Keep up the good fishing

Awesome Carl! Don't be afraid to switch things up while fishing. You should get into some good top-water action later this week and the weather change and possible cloud cover will certainly help your chances. Good luck on the trip!

Dude, the music selection durting the battle with your second fish was perfect! I'm heading there for 4 days at end of Aug. Did you stay at Fall River campground? Yes, I will be bringing my Euro rod! Fish on!

Thanks Joe - I had fun with that for sure, nothing like a little dramatic music to enhance the experience...so much fun to recreate these trips into video stories. Nice! I stayed in Bend and drove in (used up my Hilton points...Lol). Good luck and FISH-ON!!

I would start at the hatchery, the next stop would be the campground up river. Great fishing in both sections. I hope you get into some fish!
I'm trying to find a proper phone camera mount to document my fishing experiences. Do you use a phone camera? If so, what chest harness phone mount did you use?
@FlyFishDan
Жыл бұрын
I fabricated my own using a GoPro chest mount with the top of a iPhone tripod mount
So was that squirmy wormy or micro chenille? Inquiring minds gotta know! 😃
@FlyFishDan
2 жыл бұрын
You know what was interesting - a fellow fly fisher gave me the tip on the squirmy wormy (which I didn't have) so I tied on my pink micro chenille San Juan worm and then BAM! FISH-ON!!!
I pulled up to the Fall and immediately left. Catching brooders next to 20 other anglers is not my cup of tea. Fished the deschutes instead

@@FlyFishDan I will say. That was a pretty native, didn't even know they had them in there. I thought they were all stockers.
Hi Dan. Love your videos, and your enthusiasm. However, I must respectfully disagree with your doing the underwater video while fighting that last fish. The extra time it took to fight the fish one-handed undoubtedly added to the stress placed on the fish. Like I said, love and respect your videos. Just don't think that's the right approach on this one. Having said all that, he was quite the tank!
