Excellent advice to new chironomid fishermen. I have done some "float" fishing and straight lining. It is a great deal of fun. Looking forward to getting out on the water soon!

I tie a quick easy red chironomid with nothing but red floss, black thread, gold tinsel, & some white flash on a size # 6 Daiichi 1270 and I do well with that in Lake Lenice. Ah - my fly is on KZread - and yes - it's somewhere out there. You guys are seemingly in the mountains and I am enjoying your video there. But I don't ever fish with bead flies. So keep on fishing and I hope to see what else you have on KZread. : )

I am a retired Ranger on Pikes Peak, Colorado. I drift fish midge larva and pupa patterns in a kayak spring, summer and fall. VERY effective, even prettier than church and cheaper than a shrink. ha ha. Nine foot, four or five weight Rediington Classic Trout, floating line with 5x tippet (Flourocarbon). Flies are typically #12-#14, red, black or olive green. Silver or black bead head.

Great vid. Friends of mine got me into chironomid fishing last year on the lakes here in the Okanagan. Learned to fly fish years ago with mostly dry flies on rivers in the Rocky Mountains in Alberta so coming to the lakes in BC I am finding this technique a great addition to the playbook. 👍🎣. Phil designed the Quick Release indicator so that the black peg on the float indicator is on the bottom not the top of the indicator.

The jackets we had were Hardy-Greys Jackets. Our new ones, that are much nicer, are made by DryFrame. Super dry and warm.

Why use a swivel instead of a small BB-type weight. Do you ever use a two-fly set up to give the fish a choice?

Swivel gives you the same weight as small BB-shot and also keeps your fly drifting naturally without winding up. Only allowed ONE fly on BC waters, so we have used two flies when allowed in other provinces/states. Works GREAT!!

@@SFOTF So is Brian still using the same "big red"? I know you guys have been teasing him about it for years? Also, have you every tried the emerger pattern known as Shipman's Buzzer? It's a UK pattern that sits in the surface film like Brian's emerger. Great to see SFOTF on You tube!

Big Red was retired when we got him a new DryFrame Jacket 😊. Haven’t tried that Emerger pattern but will look it up...thanks. 😊👍
