Fly Fishing Hatches - Caddisflies on a Brown Trout Stream. How to Catch Brown Trout in TIGHT Cover

Спорт

Our home province of Alberta, Canada is home to superb brown trout fly fishing. One of the staple hatches to fly fish is the caddisfly hatch that begins in late May and rolls through September. We traveled to fish one of Dave's favorite brown trout streams, to hunt brown trout rising to caddisflies in heavy cover. This is a wonderful video as we both get in tight spots and do creative fly fishing casting caddisfly patterns at brown trout in impossible lies. It's a fun day on a brown trout stream together!

    So I’ve been following you guys on Instagram for a while. I have a friend that works for a fly fishing company and he’s been trying to get me into it for about a year. Well, I finally got a good rod and I’m starting out my journey. This is my first full KZread video of yours that I’ve watched and wow..... just listening to Dave talk as he’s fishing to most would sound like chatter, but it is a wealth of knowledge in every word. You’re tacticians, watching and planning five, six, ten steps ahead to pick apart every inch of water you can. Absolutely incredible. Thank you for putting out quality, informative and entertaining content. You two really have a passion for the natural world.

But I would rather scare the next fish, than leaving a trout with the fly still in its mouth. I remember every fish i broke off, and I do all I can to avoid that. Glad you enjoyed it! AND thank you for being the first to discuss exactly that. It was deliberately left in the video and while it has taken a while for anyone to raise as a discussion point it is important. There's an evolution happening as we awaken to the true value of our trout. That is leading us from conquering and managing through Dominionism to respecting and valueing what we have. On one hand if you use micro barbs or barbless hooks and small flies the fly will fall out immediately or soon after. On the other hand in a perfect world we would only focus on the fair fight of that one fish and come what may. It's a razor thin line between those perspectives. Predator or ecologist would see it at opposite ends but there's a line in there we each have to choose for ourselves. Cheers

    Great video! Do you guys ever worry about pulling the leader into your guises? I also use 12-14’ leaders and have been told you can break rod tips by reeling the connection a few feet into the rod. I see you don’t worry about that but have you ever had that happen? Thanks!

  • @jensenflyfishing

    @jensenflyfishing

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! And no, if you keep a 45 or less degree angle to the rod and know where you are on the leader/line connection you'll be find. Hold the rod straight up and jam that connection, yep, you'll break it. We've been doing 13 to 18' leaders for 30 years and have not broken a tip to that yet. Just be aware of that angle and it'll settle in as second nature and over time you'll inherently do what's needed. Cheers

  • @jensenflyfishing

    @jensenflyfishing

    3 жыл бұрын

    Firstly, we take the approach to look for fish from the bank first and especially through the muddiest sections. Once you've spotted a fish or a riser, then you're best off picking a spot to cast from and staying in that spot and then getting out of the water before moving on to find another fish rising or to sight another fish. If you have to be in the water due to high overhead cover and steep banks stick to one side of the river as to minimize your impact with stirring up mud and move ultra slowly. Hope that helps a little.

    What advantages to using a double taper fly line. I was always under the assumption DT fly lines had two advantages; 1. You can reverse the line once one side is beaten up to extend the life of the line 2. They say they roll cast better. Is there an advantage to using a DT in dry fly fishing?

  • @jensenflyfishing

    @jensenflyfishing

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Mccc999 basically our advantage is the lack of heavy WF overload knock on short casts where 3 to 6 feet of line are used with 15 foot leaders. Use a WF line in that situation (which we use 80% of the time) and that WF will overload and push down, whereas DT shoots forward.
