    I tried nymphing for the first time today and caught a lovely brown trout on a little gold beaded gold nymph, only ever used dry flies so tried putting all the little tips and lessons I've learned from watching both of you's and it worked, I never even put a dry fly back on all day so thank you very much as it's a new weapon to my fishing arsenal

    A lovely video Andy - really enjoyed - I fish the Lathkill further upstream than this - it isn't as secluded as this beat looks to be so we have to be a bit choosy on when we fish but it is delightful fishing albeit challenging - If you get back to Hampshire again I can highly recommend Beat 3 on the Dever at Bullington downstream from where you fished - hut at top of the beat and a path through woodland to the bottom - not sure if I posted that on your chalkstream series - I definitely agree that a stealthy approach with accurate delicate casting is essential on these type of waters - more important I think than the actual pattern (within reason of course) - Thanks - Steve.

    Hi Steve, thanks for watching! I've not seen all of the river further up, does it look similar to this? We might possibly go back down to the chalk this summer, we're not sure yet, if we do we'll check out that beat. I think delicate is absolutely the word, approach, delivery, false casting - it's all got to be delicate - there were plenty of times I wasn't!

    @@IBandAndyFishing - Hi Andy - I fish the stretch upstream of Conksbury Bridge and we go up as far as the source through the Dale - the stretch upstream of the bridge is similar but there are numerous weirs installed years ago which keep the depth of the river fishable - the further you go up the narrower and "smaller" the river becomes - some members have fished Tenkara tactics there but I have kept to the weir section which is dry fly only - public footpaths near to the river hence the need to be a bit choosy on times and it became virtually unfishable last summer due to picnickers and swimmers / boaters in the daytime limiting us to the last hour or so of daylight - or early morning before others turned up - as an aside the amount of litter left last summer was disgraceful and the parking so inconsiderate - the river actually goes underground at low water levels further upstream - I remember a school visit to the area on that subject - Simon C. is the man to advise on chalkstreams - I have Bullington booked in September rolled over from last year - and Dunbridge which is a lovely tributary of the Test near Stockbridge - September is a good month as it is that bit cooler and plenty of fly life still - Tight Lines - Steve.

    Hi Andy - unfortunately DK's small rivers and lakes are suffering from comorants great skills in catching fish. The grayling is near extinct and the brown trout not far behind. So I have given up on fishing the rivers in DK and only flyfish during my summer trips to Norway and Sweden. That said there is still the seatrout, but when you like dryfly and nymphing it's not the same. Do visit Derbyshire Wye from time to time - English married with family in Alfreton :-) So your an IB's trips in the area are greatly appriciated - and I might be just a tad jealous. Cheers and keep up the good fishing :-)

  • @Thymallus1965

    @Thymallus1965

    DK very unfortunately is the winter destination for most of Scandinavias cormnorants during the winter. But we have some 30.000 breeding pairs eating ½ kg fish each day. Have seen the at reservoirs around Alfreton, so fingers crossed they don't get the taste for rivers !! However, the Swedish and Finnish Baltic coast suffers heavyly as well (and with seals as well) and cormorants have started entering some of the Norwegian lake systems. So count you self very lucky for your rivers. (Mostly our visits are Xmas time...)

    Hi Goldtremor, yeah, I didn't mention cost because most folks can't get on here anyway, it isn't a day ticket water as such. As Andrew says below, compared to a decent seat at a football match or a night at the theatre it's comparative cost and plenty of average folks do those things every weekend. With the Lathkill the quality of the fishing drives the demand and the demand drives the price, and the estate are sensitive with it, it doesn't get fished very often either. It's a pretty unique situation

Interesting comment that, the weed growth here is really healthy and the water free of phosphates end fertilizer, as far as I'm aware the weed isn't managed like on a southern chalkstream. If you like fishing brown trout. better be thankful cause if they didnt do what they did. You wouldnt be fishing for them would you 🤣. the cost of river fly fishing is a debate which will rumble on for a while I think.
