Fly Fishing for MUSKY (I DID IT!!!)

Been wanting to cross this one off the list for quite some time. Musky on the fly!!! Had a blast taking my Kayak into a backcountry Sunset Country Lake looking for the fish of 10,000 casts.

AWESOME VID JAY!!! (As always...) Tough work in a kayak with a fly rod and catching Muskies. Good for you!!! Good advice with the boat side tactics too. Anybody reading through the comments and considering to hire Darcy, he is one of the best guides in the Musky industry. I have had the Honor of sharing a boat with Darcy a couple of days each summer/fall for the last 6-7 years and he has taught me some things you don’t read or find anywhere out there about Musky fishing. He is on another level compared to some of the best Musky fisherman in the industry. Well worth every penny and then some. He will change the way you approach Musky fishing. CATCH THE BIG ONE Jay!

I just decided to take up fly fishing and only have a sit on top kayak to fish from. I love watching the older videos of you and Aaron fly fishing and I’d love to see some more, especially an instructional if you’d be up for such a thing. Awesome stuff Jay, hope to see more from the kayak, but whatever it is, I know I’ll love it! Hope you’re doing well up there in sunset country. Take care.

Love the vid! Haven’t watched in a long time due to this summer being strange and not being able to fish, but now I’ve made a deal with a guy and have started working on building up my diy fishing boat! It’s a 16ft Glastron fiberglass trihull that’s has a 50hp Evinrude outboard on it, I’ve already repainted it from the terrible blue it was to a tan/green, plan on using as a duck boat also, now I just need to do some engine work, some fiberglass repair, and then I’m going to build an awesome casting deck with storage!

Great job. Flyfishing for Muskie from a kayak has to be very difficult. I flyfish for them from my Jon boat and that is tough enough. I have been chasing them with a flyrod for about 40 years and my two tips to you are :very sharp hooks and a good wire leader. I use Tyger wire,30lb test on a 9 to 11 wt flyrod.I use streamers, but really have good luck with a big Dahlberg divers and saltwater poppers. Muskies take lots of frogs and small animals. Thanks for posting.

Very nice footage. Awesome amount of action and would love to try this myself. I have a lot of experience with pike and know there are days they are difficult to catch. Sometimes they just follow. A lot of variation in the retrieve is key at those moments. So I wonder if you would get more bites when there is more variation in the retrieve. Rolly Polly and very long pauses. We often fish with bigger flies. Very interesting and a fish which is still on my bucket list. Thanks for the great footage

Strip setting will help you connect more for some reason muskies and northern don’t get hooked too well on the trout set style hook set. If you strip into them you connect quite a bit more. Works for me at least.

130lb is hardcore. I fish Georgian Bay esox and find 50lb flourocarbon suitable as long as it's a fresh leader, no nicks or serious kinks. Even 40 inch fish don't break it in the course of one fight. How might i benefit from a 100 plus pound leader? Is it durability? My biggest pike, and some decent musky, were taken with 17, 20, and 25 pound, tied fluorocarbon leaders with snaps and no swivel. Braid to fluorocarbon, except for the odd time when i want my mono to fluorocarbon for some stretch. What do you think, Jay? Thanks for all the videos!
