FLY FISHING COLORADO ... a little extra split shot goes a long way!

FLY FISHING COLORADO ... a little extra split shot goes a long way!
Spent the day fly fishing some new water. Incredibly beautiful and always grateful to live here in beautiful Colorado! Fishing was slow at first ... so decided to make a small adjustment and add a little bit more split shot to my rig ... and that made all the difference! Lots of beautiful, hard fighting trout put in the net!
Hope you'll enjoy this one and thanks as always for watching! dan

    Like you said previously they usually feed down in the column. Split shot does the trick. Absolutely gorgeous fish and footage.

    Yep, crazy that for my first couple years I was always fishing too high in that water column. So I’m guessing others probably do the same. When you’re putting that much shot on, you’d think that you’d just get hung up on bottom on every drift, but because the water is moving so swiftly, and it’s deeper than it looks, I didn’t get hung up once. Always appreciate your comments man. Dan

    Love the video, and the advice for adding split shots, but you forgot to give a little more detail about the setup---what fly pattern and size--one fly or two and fly rod wt and length---thanks for sharing

    Appreciate it Bill! Amazing what a difference a small split shot can make! As for the other stuff, I generally fish Colorado's rivers with my good ol 9' 5wt rod and almost always using a triple nymph rig. In one of my other videos ... linked here --> kzread.info/dash/bejne/q36mvLaBdNqvn5c.html ... I talk about I setup my typical nymph rig. Hope you'll have a chance to check it out. Some of my best (and only) artwork ever ;) Thanks again for the channel support, Dan

    Thanks man ... definitely a beautiful place to put a few fish in the net. I was trying so hard to not let those couple big rainbows downstream but they instinctively know that’s one of their best ways to break loose. So they b-line downstream and I tried to turn them the other way but it wasn’t happening. Completely amazed they didn’t break off when you factor strong water current plus their weight and fight ... so got lucky for sure. Always appreciate your comments and channel support!! Dan

    Really appreciate that Sail 2 Spear! That’s definitely one of the more beautiful places I’ve fly fished here in Colorado. Really do love where this hobby (if you can really call it that 😉 ... maybe obsession is better!) takes me. Would’ve never learned of or gone to a place like this without it! Many thanks for your channel support my friend! dan

    Adjustments man. Gotta love when you make em and fish start going in the net! I’ve been trying to take breaks throughout the day to kinda evaluate what’s working and what’s not, and it’s actually been a great help. Appreciate the comment and channel support as always man. Hope we hit the river again here real soon!

    Sweet video Dan! That fight at the 3:50 mark was awesome, makes me excited to get the gear out this weekend to start figuring things out! Great shots of where you were fishing, it all looked gorgeous! Thanks for sharing all these fishing tips, i've been listening closely! Tight Lines my friend!

    That guy was literally built like a missile. Might be the hardest fighting rainbow pound for pound I've ever come across man. I was using 5x tippet, so it's really quite the challenge when you've got a strong fish like that on, and you're also battling that swift current. Amazed still that I got him in the net!! Man, I cannot wait to hear how it goes for you and Sam to try out fly fishing. I really think you're going to love it, but also know there will be some frustrating moments. One bit of advice for you both. Try and carve out a chunk of time that is dedicated to just using the fly rod. I think that'll be good because you are both excellent spin casters and it will be really tempting to just toss the fly rod down and reach for ol' reliable. But I'm guessing if you can power thru that initial learning curve, you'll get the hang of it really quickly. And once you do, it'll be hard to put the fly rod down :)

    @@WhatMyLensSees The Reels are spooled with line, leader, and tippet...Spent some time at my local fly shop talking to some guys and figuring out some basics. Going to start casting tomorrow or the day after! I can't tell you how excited I am to learn this, Sam is too! Our first episode will be explaining our gear, doing some casting, and then going for some crappie and bluegill out at a local pond...We went with the Pawl and click reels on purpose, I thought about replacing them with the newer reels but thought it would be cool to use the older style ones! I can already tell i'm going to be an avid fly fisherman, MIGHT even replace my spinning reels but we'll see lol. FYI: NEVER Thought I would say that.

    Much appreciated Derek and great to hear you're out there learning how to fly fish. It's a journey that I'm sure you'll be very grateful to have started!!! I've been more careful in my videos recently about sharing locations/spots (unless it's already an extremely popular/highly recognizable location) as it can lead to overcrowding, etc. But please feel free to send an email to whatmylenssees18@gmail.com and we can talk from there. Also, an absolutely fantastic resource for learning about Colorados best rivers to fly fish, definitely check out the book Colorado's Best Fly Fishing by Landon Mayer. That's served as my guide for the past few years and is just an awesome resource. Thanks again for watching and for the kind words. Hope you'll check out some of my other fly fishing videos when you get a chance :) take care, dan

    How the water in the summer in Colorado? Is it cold or warm like Ohio ?

  • @WhatMyLensSees

    @WhatMyLensSees

    4 жыл бұрын

    It's pretty cold Kumbo. The river's here are fed from snowmelt, so they stay relatively cold even in the Summer time. There is a small window of a couple months where you can wade fish in Tevas/Sandals, but even then you're feet are eventually gonna get chilled.
