Fluval FX6 Rim Connector Upgrade - Intake and Output Mod. Custom DIY Plumbing

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Fluval’s FX6 Rim clamp doesn’t fit over the rim of most aquariums 75 gallons and larger. Use this DIY PVC and tubing mod to eliminate the need for the rim clamp.
The following is a parts list to do one FX6 both intake and output.
-(1)Roll of 1” pond tubing from Lowe’s or Home Depot (will actual do 2 complete set ups)
www.homedepot.com/p/BECKETT-1...
- (4) 1” 90s

-(1) 2’ piece of 1” PVC

-(2) slip/FPT coupling
www.homedepot.com/p/Charlotte...
-(3 or 4) 1” barbed fitting.

With my tanks of 125 & 210 gallons over the years I have just used the cordless Dremel to shave a small section (enough to fit the clip over) of plastic rimming. Then you can slide both clips over that one shaved down section, so I try to off-center the cut & slide the outlet clamp one way & the inlet the other. Though I doubt the clip would fall off anyhow even if over a shaved down section. On my current 210-gallon I have 2x FX6's so I had to Dremel both sides due the plastic dividers/glass cover holders. It is a quick & simple process that I use whenever setting up a new large tank. You can even hold or prop up a fish net or piece of paper (or whatever) in one hand to collect the hot plastic shavings while you Dremel with other. Easy peasy.

It’s a great idea to change hose to smooth inner surface as this increases flow and decreases sediment gather in them. Also, with connecting hose to FX6, the inlet/outlet has a groove that an Oring placed there will make leaks improbable.

Great looking set up. I'm looking to do this set up after looking for Fluval fx6 replacement hoses. They cost 40$ each and i need 2 of them. Ridiculous! So yeah I found a 25 foot PVC flex hose that's poly lined and bpa/food grade for 25 bucks il be using instead. Shame on Fluval for making their replacement hoses so expensive. I'm hoping it's flexible enough so that i don't have to make all the extra connections but if i do have to at least now up have an idea of how to do it thanks to this video.

Solid bends slow the flow of water versus a soft bend with the stick hoses. I have 8 fx6s in my house and don’t see the point in doing this at all. The clamps have fit on all 7 of my tanks as well..

It sure does. In this instance the measured flow (output volume per unit of time) to fill a 5 gallon bucket is within 0.5 seconds of the stock setup. Taking human error into consideration with a stopwatch it’s barely measurable. But yea many hard 90s over a long section of piping would slow it for sure. That’s cool yours fit, I wish mine would’ve. Thanks for watching.

The replacement hose for the FX is crazy priced imo Also what is that one barb called the one you put in the tank and slipped the rubber piece over? I think I have to make my clamp thing bigger cause it will have to go over a piece of wood from my canopy

It’s flexible but not as much as the factory tubing. Better than most though. They do have some clear very pliable tubing you can get sort of like on a python system. Heating the tubing and getting it placed how you want also works. The fitting is MPT x 1 1/8” HB straight adapter. Or a FPT depending on what type of 90 you use (a matter of female or male threads)

So the pond hose connection at the quick connects did not leak? While it fits, it was not as tight as using the original Fluval hoses with the white rubber cap at the end. It kind of went on the connection looser than anticipated. Leak tested and I had a very small drip. Wasn't until I got some O-rings at Lowes and installed it at the tip of the connector that the area was fully sealed.

Yea so I used what I had laying around but it would depend on what’s on the other end. They make barbs that are slip, mpt, ftp, etc. Mine were slightly different I just showed the easy or common way. Realistically you can pipe it however you want as long as you make 2 90s to get over the rim and then somehow connect your input/output. And yea the 1 1/8 fitting is just a really good fit. So you’d need two per fx set up

I don’t know if the output nozzle would glue into 1” PVC. I think it’s metric so probably not. But one option is when you glue your 2 90s together that go over the rim, make sure one that goes into the tank is threaded on the inside. Then get a male threaded 90 and use that as your output. It’s obviously only gonna be 1 out now instead of two, but you get way more flow and it pushes across the tank nicely.
