Floyd Rose Upgrade: 40th Anniversary Floyd

Ойын-сауық

I've had this Jackson Dinky Dk2s for years but I've never used it live. I always felt the weakest point was the licence Floyd Rose. In this video I change that.

@@bthonk dude. you’ll probably think i’m nuts but: only wash your hair like 2-3 times a week. Use a decent shampoo and separate conditioner (like pantene or better). I usually do a couple passes of conditioner. What’s most important is the in between days is brushing it like marsha freakin brady. seriously. when i get lazy and don’t brush it my wife tells me i look like a homeless dude. but when i brush regularly it falls straight and neat like the cover of a 70s rock album. sadly she won’t let me do lamb chops so i just have a goatee, but it works. And then don’t think about it after. it’s hair and we’re guys, not women who make us late to everything doing hair and makeup. Oh ya, and singers. They take as long as most women, but they’re singers, ya know? end of rant.

Hey man, although you're right about Floyd's not being originally designed to bend up, on a good Floyd, you should be able to bend up or down without tuning instability.

I own a Jackson Kelly KE3 and it came with the same Floyd, but I have to say I never had tuning issues with it, it wasn't as solid as the German Floyd on my Shecter but it was great, I just replaced the block with a brass one and now it feels very solid along as noiseless spring.

One thing I did notice was that there was a small gap between the end of the fretboard and the front-edge of the locking nut, there should be no gap in between the end of the fretboard and the front-edge of the locking nut because the locking nut's front-edge defines the zero-point of the guitar's scale-length, if this zero-point is not exactly right on the end of the fretboard near the first fret, this will put the guitar's 12th-fret intonation out of whack, and you'll find that the tuning will go progressively out as you go towards the nut, so, when you install the locking-nut the front edge of it needs to be hard up against the end of the fretboard with no gap visible.

Beautiful look on the guitar! Very hot rod like. You can also get knobs and tuners in satin chrome, i did that an older Schecter Damien model when I swapped the black to satin chrome to look like the newer models. I do however have an install recommendation for you, the springs should be straight to the block and not angled. With an angel, there is a chance the spring pops out due to the changing tension angles when you pull on them.

Sounds and looks great! I installed a brass big block on my Jackson RS 32 V and the tone is much better, and I had already installed an EMG 81 in the bridge position. The licensed Floyd on it sucks for tuning stability though. I never play that guitar because of that, so I need to upgrade to a better Floyd and start playing that guitar again. PS. I can swing the trem down or up and stays in tune absolutely. I did the exact same set up on my original Kramer Nightswan Aztec from 1989 and same thing. I think more then anything it improves reliability so much. I'm also doing my 96 Hamer Californian. It's tried and true so why not lol.

I've wanted to do a simaler upgrade on my RG330 for a long time but i don't think the trem route is the same for my version of the edgeIII. after torqing the hell out of the movable parts it seems much more in tune, in my case the screws under the nut were a bit loose easy to miss those, i like your upgrade alot.

The last time I was on tour, I was given a guitar to use that had a Floyd Rose. It broke a string after the second gig. Whereas with my Carvin V220, I could replace the string in a matter of minutes, not so with ol' Floyd. I put the loaner guitar back in its case, where it remained for the next 2-1/2 months, whipped out the Carvin, and all was well. I have no patience for a tremolo system that requires (a) cutting off the ball ends to restring it, and (b) hoping I didn't leave my Allen wrench at home. I understand that the Speedloader provided some relief, but only if you bought the special bullet-end strings. Now it is difficult, if not impossible, to buy replacement strings. So back to whipping out the Dykes and Allen wrenches ... uh, I'm thinking "no". The V220 was my workhorse for 29 years. My new guitar is a Kiesel (f/k/a Carvin) DC600 with the Hipshot whammy bar - it will arrive on or about December 16, 2020. Based on the performance of my V220, I look forward to putting it through its paces.

My most stable guitar is it Ibanez with a edge 3 bridge. Even though it was considerably a cheapo guitar it stays in tune. Sometimes the simplest things give you tuning stability. Over the years I've learned that adding lip balm to the blades and give it a few turns adds tons stability.

I found out spring noise, for me, was spring direction. I had the same stupid noise coming from a real German Schaller Floyd. I got rid of it by complete accident, just from changing the direction of the springs. At first the v of springs pointed to the but of the guitar, so i changed it so the v pointed towards the neck and it was gone and felt like butter. Buttery smooth, no clicking. I will say I never cared for trem stoppers. I like to pull up, and developed a picking to work around the detuning of the trem itself.

I’m old enough to remember the Floyd Rose craze. The thing is I happened to have a Standard Fender Strat with a tremolo that stayed in tune just fine. I would string it up so there wasn’t a steep angle from the nut to the tuners, and lube the nut with chainsaw oil. I couldn’t get the flapping strings effect, but it worked just fine. Almost perfect. I always got comments about how could it be possible to stay in tune. So, I never had a Floyd. I used to call them kitchen sinks. Believe me when I tell you, Floyd Rose was everywhere in the early 80s.

Ireally don't use trem like I used to as it's not "The 80's" anymore . It's nice to know you have it , but ....... To each . Speaking of the 80's ,1 thing I love about some real FR's is the D-Tuna feature . That too would be handy . Bottom line , everyone needs a hardtail around for crazy alternate tunings .

either block the the trem or use that trem stopper and thta will make changing strings just as if it didnt have a floyd or just change strings proper, one at a time and its still easy. Been using some of those methods for 25+ yrs and it only takes me about 5 mins longer to change strings than a non floyd does.

the only thing with trem stoppers is how do you compensate for the flatness on the G after a bit of trem action? Every floyd style trem needs a little tug sharp to get back to its correct pitch, the elastic band syndrome.

Is this made from titanium? noticed they do have a titanium model but unfortunately it’s been discontinued until further notice, which, makes sense, being $1,444 USD, and being in Australia if I ordered it it would make it nearly $2k before shipping it’s not exactly affordable, I just assume that the chrome finish is what gives it that premium titanium look, looks sick on the jackson, great vid

maybe try a piece of felt for the tremstopper but i dont know how it would affect sustain if it may dampen it a little but that is the only down fall to the trem stoppers thats why i just let them float, if u get the guitar set up right they will stay in tune just fine floating actually as good if not better cause it has the exact amount of spring tension for the strings so if everything is right it has to go back to that perfect point. i like your up pitch fluttering to that since u put the trem stop on now u cant do!

Honestly I couldn't hear much difference, but I suppose if it stays in tune fine. (I can't even keep a fixed bridge in tune anyway)

Floyds are well known for staying in tune better than anything other than an evertune, once set up correctly and so long as the strings don't break. However... Setup and strings break so ymmv.

Get rid of the stopper, Floyd makes a "Return to Zero" type stopper that allows you to still float.. try that out.. it sucks to have "Dive only" option with such an ULTRA bridge. The "Brass Claw" is gimmicky.. find a vid that shows a difference in brass claws vs steel. It does look cooler l guess if you are concerned about looks.. if that's the case.. FU Tone makes Ti anodized colored parts for that bridge, nut screws, string lock blocks, saddle set screws, string lock screws all in blue, red, gold, silver green or purple, you would clearly go red on that guitar..it would look incredibly quality but other than better string lock blocks it's all esthetics. Your guitar does sound much tighter and better over all since bridge upgrade, brass block is the culprit! Looks very cool and a really great guitar! Congrats!

Hi, i need to ask about this floyd swap, i want to swap a jackson licenced floyd from a js32 RR but i'm not sure if the dimensions of the original floyd rose are compatible with the jackson one, i have no one to ask this with my friends and i need to know this before buying the OFR, you didn't needed to change the routing of the body to swap the bridge?

Considering they're made in the same factory around the same time period using the same bridge I should be able to install all of the same parts on my Kelly KE3 without any issues right?

Does the bottom edge seem a lot closer to the body on your yours. I just noticed my dk2 has a bigger gap on the top plays good though.

I was a guy who said he would never buy a Floyd rose but after realizing how easy it is to stop the strings from detuning each other with a trem stop I was sold on a Floyd rose guitar.
