Cus D’Amato’s always said that crossing paths with Mike Tyson was the second time that he was struck by lightning, the first time was when the 14-year-old Floyd Patterson walked into his gym. Patterson was boxing’s first ‘Peekaboo’ fighter of prominence and was the most promising prospect of the early 50’s. But Floyd’s critics believed him to be too nice for the sport and that he didn’t possess the zest for violence that is required to be a successful boxer. But the evil intentions that his punches carried were clear, and with his murderous power and blinding speed he was able to beat the odds and become the youngest man ever to win the heavyweight championship of the world.

Boom. You nailed it. I’ve always said that even if you don’t think he’s a top 10 HW champion, his overall career accomplishments and accolades easily make him a top 10 P4P all time great. Nobody gets overlooked and disrespected more than Floyd Patterson. Edit: Additionally, he was a 2x Golden Gloves champion back to back in 1951 and 52'.

Im so glad i watched this. I knew of Floyd Patterson, but never knew of any this in such detail.
In 1952 Floyd won the open light heavyweight NYC golden gloves the next fight was the heavyweight novice title fight won by my father George Booton against Norman Towns. My farther and Floyd were good friends and sparring partners
What an amazing short documentary. This is why boxing is the ultimate sport.
I’ve always liked the juxtaposition of a style that’s so murderous in the hands of the right practitioner, having such a harmless sounding name.
He was called The Gentleman for a reason. He was a black man that the world could be proud of back then and was humble. Sonny Liston came along and they didn't like him because he came from a rough background and he was real. Floyd Patterson's gazelle punch would put any heavyweight in history down I'm sure! I always thought that Mos Def should play Floyd Patterson in a movie if they ever made one.

Well i prefer boxer who down many times but always get back up and keep fighting. It shows courage to face challenges. He is down not because he is weak, but because the opponent is strong and get back up to try again knowing that he will face that terrifying punch that down him....again and again show his courage. Recent example is when tyson fury get up and keep fighting after eating deontay wilder signature haymaker...wow what a moment.

I like when people are honest and when they fight someone truly gifted they give that person recognition for it. Very respectful fighters. It takes a honest character to say to people when someone is quite good at something and it even makes you feel threatened or you can admit that the fighter is just better than you. That takes a real strength of a person to do that.

Sometimes I felt that aside from the negative press, Muhammad Ali's taunts and jokes about Sonny Liston hurt his image. Whenever people remember Sonny Liston, they remember being called ugly and a criminal by Ali. Same with Joe Frazier getting called dumb, ugly, and a gorilla by Ali. Muhammad Ali is so popular and loved by the public, that they joined in on the attacks of his opponents.
