these songs were written for Elizabethan's to sing for pleasure at home. In no way were they restricted to counter-tenors. This is a beautiful performance and I am showing it to my Renaissance music class. Thank you.

This music leaps into life across more than four hundred years, thanks to these performers. Of course, it took a Dowland to compose it - but it would remain lost in historical archives if it wasn't re-created like this, for us today.

I come here every year or so to be devastated by and to relish these extraordinary performances; unmatched in my opinion. I feel so lucky to have found them, and to have been alive to hear them.

This is absolutely extraordinary and both musicians are fantastic! Anyone of you out there writing in comments/critiques such as "they didn't sing like that", etc. don't know that much about music and shouldn't waste your time or energy. Part of what makes music so incredible is that it is a subjective art form and when performed, is ultimately interpreted and reinterpreted. That's what makes it so special and unique! This video is incredibly special and unique!

The lute, incapable of loud music, was the perfect accompaniment for solo or small secular choral music in intimate settings like a parlour setting, a party. It was not compatable with large venues like opera or symphonies but flourished in the age before "concerts". It was polular at court and picnics even. The close synergy of these two performers is not only a remarkable achievement but emphasises the true recreation of the way this music was originally sung and played, a truly time-travelled exactness (in me humble ...) of the music of John Dowland - the first two decades of the 1600s - the ending of the age of Elizabeth I, the Virgin queen/(Virginia's namesake) and of the beginning of James the First (Jamestown namesake) - the age of the much loved William Shakespear.

This is not meant for two performers. It's meant for at least three, the lutenist, the cantus, the bassus. Some other songs have more than that, polyphonic songs, these. Well, it's how they were originally sung. For example, check www.classicalarchives.com/album/3760014193262.html and scroll to "Flow my tears."

Flow, my tears, fall from your springs! Exiled for ever, let me mourn; Where night's black bird her sad infamy sings, There let me live forlorn. Down vain lights, shine you no more! No nights are dark enough for those That in despair their last fortunes deplore. Light doth but shame disclose. Never may my woes be relieved, Since pity is fled; And tears and sighs and groans my weary days, my weary days Of all joys have deprived. From the highest spire of contentment My fortune is thrown; And fear and grief and pain for my deserts, for my deserts Are my hopes, since hope is gone. Hark! you shadows that in darkness dwell, Learn to contemn light Happy, happy they that in hell Feel not the world's despite.

In Memoriam John Dowland.

Just stumbled upon this by chance one day, and it became my favourite version of this song, ever. The speed at which it is performed is perfect here. There's a newer version, which is slower - and it's worse for it. Play this too slow, and it becomes sleep-inducing. Play it too fast, and it feels hectic. This one right here hits the exact mark.
