Floss the teeth you want to keep: Nick Crocker at TEDxDarwin

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Floss the teeth you want to keep. That little piece of advice, simple as it was, sparked a five year journey for Nick Crocker, exploring the ability of individuals to change themselves. As it turns out, we're not really very good at changing ourselves. We now face an unprecedented global health crisis, the source of which is the inability of individuals to moderate their desires. Eating too much, moving too little, smoking, drinking, overworking and undersleeping are now some of the biggest killers in the US.
So how do we change ourselves? It turns out there's a bunch of little hacks that exist to improve your ability to change. Understanding and applying them allows us to improve our ability change in our own lives. As it turns out, this ability has everything to do with the future of the world.
Nick Crocker is an Australian entrepreneur and founder of JoinSessions.com - a social fitness startup inspiring people to live more active lives.

I was close to loosing my teeth through gum disease five years ago. I changed my dentist which changed my oral hygiene care. She introduced me to tepees and deep cleaning by her every three months. My gums are now salmon pink, not angry red and never bleed. Some very rude people in this audience. I take my hat off to anyone who can talk in front of an audience. This guy does well.

Pia Nyström I've always had a really good diet and exercise programme. I had braces on teeth when a teenager and this has been linked to gum disease. I eat more dairy now than I used to......who knows what the problem was? Am just very happy that I have not lost my teeth and that I came across a dentist who knew about gum disease, before it was to late.

I think most of this talk is good, but I remember hearing from a dentist on the Skeptic's Guide to the Universe podcast that there isn't evidence that flossing is the most effective. Dentists encourage flossing because they teach it at dental school out of tradition. A more effective way I've heard is to run a tooth pick (wooden or plastic) along your gum line to prevent build up of plaque.

Interdental brushes are the most effective way of cleaning approximal surfaces, studies show. Flossing is ineffective because of two things, physical limitations of the floss and poor technique :)

Hey mate, I'm a dentist and I definitely don't just recommend flossing because of tradition. When done correctly, it WORKS, and even when done incorrectly is better than doing nothing. Also, a toothpick run along the gumline is not a replacement for flossing. Flossing isn't meant to target plaque on the buccal and lingual surfaces of a tooth along the gumline, it's meant to clear food debris and disrupt the plaque layer IN BETWEEN teeth and below the contact points. I looked up the source you cited regarding the Skeptic's Guide to the Universe and went through the Cochrane Review they had listed regarding the efficacy of flossing. That review found that brushing AND flossing had a statistically significant improvement in gingivitis compared to brushing alone, which is the exact opposite of what you've said. I wish people spreading false dental information would at least do their research CORRECTLY. Like seriously, why would we as dentists lie about this? Why do you think we're flossing our own teeth? You do realise that more cavities in patients is more business for us, right?
