Let's take an #excursion together to this colorful #Macedonian city, a fusion of cultures from the peoples who were once hosted in the green #valley through which the river #Sakoulevas flows.
"I don't know if one chooses the venues or the venues choose us. It's like #love: you either choose or they choose you." With this phrase, the famous #director Thodoros #Angelopoulos had described his relationship with Florina, the city he chose to shoot seven of his #films. In particular, the actor Marcelo #Mastrogianni enjoyed local #food of Florina during the breaks of the #episodic film the #Meteor #step of the stork in the winter of 1991.
Many notable #architects and engineers worked here, giving a unique #neoclassical air that you can explore on your #walks by the #river and its bridges.
Florina is built at an altitude of 687 meters and has a population of approximately 18 thousand inhabitants. Due to its inland location and altitude, the Western Macedonian city is officially the #coldest #region in Greece, with an average annual temperature of just 12 °C and minimum temperatures in the #winter months often reaching -10 °C.

The ancient name of the area was #Lygistis, from the hero and argonaut Lygea. The Macedonian state of #Dorian origin was united to his kingdom by #Philip II
In Florina there are traces of habitation from the late Bronze Age as shown by the findings that you can admire in the city's #Archaeological #Museum.
During the Byzantine period, the "Castle of Hlerinos" was built in a strategic location, which developed into the homonymous city. The name "#Chlerinos" probably comes from the word chloro, due to the climate and vegetation of the area.
Noteworthy is the phenomenon of 'frozen fog', known in the region as #siniaki, which is usually observed in the winter months and, usually, in January. It is a thick veil of #fog that covers the city of Florina. The phenomenon can last for weeks.
On the eve of #Christmas, residents light bonfires in dozens of neighborhoods of the city, with the Hammam bonfire being the most popular. An ancient custom that drives away evil spirits. Around the bonfires, a feast and feast with traditional dishes is set up, in which all the residents participate, as well as many tourists who visit the city on those days.
The particularly rich natural landscape of the prefecture, as well as the efforts of the residents, gave Florina the opportunity to develop through #ecotourism programs.

Πάρα πολύ ωραίο βίντεο! Μπράβο! Λιτό, απέριττο, αλλά σωστό, ευχάριστο και περιεκτικό σε πληροφορία...όπως πρέπει. Χωρίς τετριμμένους βερμπαλισμούς και κρυόκωλα κλισέ στην αφήγηση. Και τα πλάνα άρτια, ποικίλα, αντιπροσωπευτικά, πολλά απ' αυτά εντυπωσιακά, με σωστό ρυθμό στο μοντάζ. Πολύ επαγγελματική δουλειά. Και πάλι μπράβο! Κ.Μ. [σ.σ. Hi, thanks for liking the video. Some people speak Greek in Albania, North Macedonia and Bulgaria and some people speak slavic in Greece. This is normal in Balkans. Lerin is the slavic name of Florina. Nothing to hide. And no reason to hate people or languages. United we can do more 👍🏻

Stayed there for three days at the Casino. Strange that most people living there and the small villages spoke the Slavic language and greek. They said that the towns name is Lerin and the names of towns , river lakes and surnames were forcible change by the greeks. Not so much a greek Town more slavic.

The true name is FLORINA and i located in the REAL and ONLY ONE MACEDONIA IN HELAS. Everything else is slavic crap and imposters.😤👎💩🇲🇰
Even Africa can be slavic. Slav is not a DNA thing. Its culture and language thing. So us calling ourselves Macedonian is not crazy. If a greek born in Germany speaks only German he is not Germanic or Turkic. (Germanic= Norway, Sweden, Germany), (Turkic= Turkish, Tatar, Azerbaijan.... )
