Seems to me that his building was never built the proper way to begin with. All of the homes around him are still standing.

The damage is devastating, but why would anyone be shocked? If you live in the Keys (or anywhere in that area), you are rolling the dice on hurricane destruction. If I had a house there, I'd be surprised I lasted as long as I did.

Doug Sholly I was in my condo on Marco Island. You have to afford to live here. These people aren't going anywhere. They rebuild and move on. My place was in the eye and hit with 90-130mph winds for hours with no damage at all. Even my car is undamaged. The only people shocked are the media reporters. These are their words. I thought the whole thing was exciting.

True to a point, but the keys really do not get hit that often with a strong hurricane. The last really bad hit was in 1935, so most people there have not lived through one. There was a hit in 1998, but was more flood damage then tearing the roof of a house damage.

The Keys get hit about as often as any other coastal region. The odds are the same. If I lived in a trailer in Kansas, I wouldn't be shocked if a tornado destroyed my home. If I lived in Pompeii, I wouldn't be shocked if a volcano buried my village. I am just saying if you live in a high risk area of a particular natural disaster, there is no reason to be shocked when it actually happens. If I lived in Wisconsin and got devastated by a hurricane, THEN I would be shocked.

Yep, I agree with that, but just saying although people should not be shocked considering it could happen any time, after years of not getting hit people forget the risk. My friend moved to Key West 19 years ago, had a baby, his son just left for collage. His son's whole life living in the keys he was not hit with anything like this, so it's a little bit of a shock. Even this hard of a hit only caused him minor flooding in his yard, non in the house and no real damage to his house,.. but he has pool damage and landscape destruction.

Oh, totally get the false sense of security syndrome, but I would think that after the hurricane steamrolled them, they would get the wake up call and realize "well, I did pitch my tent in the middle of an Amtrak train track"

I live here full time. We are one human family... vacation home owners, retirees, and hard working people like me who work 3 jobs to afford to live here and enjoy our two days off a week.... it’s hard for all of us. We love our islands!!

Properties are climbing up and up. Glad I sold as a joint owner in 2023. I don't want to redo due to Hurricanes & water damage.

Billy Garcia many did leave. The buildings are built to withstand major hurricanes. The monster storm surge overcame most of these buildings in the keys.

Shocked??? Not those of us that were here for Donna when it wiped out the bridges. To many retirees and snowbirds buying property here without a clue.Worse will come it is only a matter of time.

if you were canadian you'd be well acquainted with her voice, since she's a regular feature, but i wouldnt say her accent is representative of any region in particular. its a phonetic accent, where you just emphasize the syllables a bit more
