Florence Jones and Caleen Sisk: Winnemem Healers

The legendary Winnemem Wintu healer, Florence Jones (1907-2003), passed on leadership of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe to Caleen Sisk over a decade ago. Although Chief Sisk is recognized the world over as a powerful indigenous leader, the U.S. government continues its failure to recognize the Winnemem Wintu. Could it be due to their determined opposition to Bureau of Reclamation plans to raise the height of Shasta Dam, which would flood most of the remaining Winnemem sacred places along the McCloud River in northern California? We have gone back into our archives to edit this 11-minute short film about the continuity of leadership among the Winnemem Wintu, one of the criteria for federal recognition. Enjoy.

Fantastic report and I now have more knowledge and learned of a tribe I did not know of. I am not of Indian blood but know the terrible history that they have endured at hands of cruel and greedy whites. We still have some of those around who don't understand the treasure we have in our midst. The Native American Traditions and Cultures are a National Treasure that must be preserved. We have only come to now know what happened and it's being spread over the internet. People did not know because the schools did not teach there truth, movies and media did not portray the truth and the Government would have not made it know because of the past treachery, brutality, cruelty and genocide that was visited upon the North American Tribes. It is a shameful past. When I was a teacher I taught the truth as much as I could. Thank Creator for our Native Peoples that yet survive and now are rising up again.
