About the final part "and then…": and then FLOOD went on saying a rough mix was done in 2 days and then Francois Kevorkian mixed it but they weren't happy so they turned back to the rough mix that was recorded on a crappy cassette and worked hard to copy that mix exactly because that was when they got it right and perfect. And the whole point of his speech was that the "art" and the "craft" i.e. the artist and the producer have to work together in trust and harmony in order to make unforgettable music. That's what I remember. :) you'll find his whole speech somewhere on the tube

One of the skills Alan had,in my opinion, is that he could put some light whenever Martin's demos were too dark without betraying the nature of the songs.

Or vice versa. "To Have and to Hold" is a good example of the reverse, Martin preferred a lighter treatment (Spanish Taster version), and Alan preferred darker (album version).

ENJOY THE SILENCE and Duran durans ORDINARY WORLD are 2 of the most heavenly tracks ever. I never get bored of them and this is so intriguing

I LOVE how he brought up how there’s this question on whether or not it’s a happy or sad song. This, I think, is the basis for its success, because it’s like a mixture of a rare emotion that can’t really be outright categorized (as happy or sad, or tough, or soft like with regular songs) but it’s an emotion that we’ve all felt, for sure, but don’t really have a word for it. It’s an amalgam of several. I won’t go into describing what that is. I have my own interpretation, and I’m sure you do to. But it’s part of why this is a work of art, and a brilliant one at that.

Quite simply the most hypnotic and addictive baseline ever created.

Flood is the best! Hope he will be working with DM one day. They made best albums: Violator and SOFAD, so it is logic to repeat this success. One thing to mansion, on both albums there was Alan Wilder, so if he also reunites DM it will be really something!

All I ever wanted all I ever needed was Depeche mode. Thank you for the music that carried me through some tough times.

That was rather lovely and enjoyable to watch. Thank you for posting it. I found myself laughing at his anecdotes several times and had to rewind. Good storyteller, I hope Martin's seen this :)

Sitting at work, so I couldn't put the sound on. His production credits are really immense, and he seems to have a knack for working with a band at the exact right moment... when they are creating their seminal work. Besides DM/U2, Smashing Pumpkins, NIN, and Glasvegas spring instantly to mind.

Just recently I've discovered 'Deep dive 90s rock' playlist on Spotify, starting to like NIN and Smashing Pumpkins as well and will keep digging deeper into their music :D Good to know they've also worked with Flood. Btw, he's a lucky bastard, got to have worked with those amazing bands, I think I've made a wrong career choice xD

There is an eight-note delay and a little reverb. There is a chorus effect too, but with a twist - back then they would do it manually, meaning there were actually 4 microphones on Martin's guitar in different positions in front of the amp. So there's actually 4 recordings of the same guitar part which were then glued together to make a "chorus" effect.

I like DM a lot lot especially Martin Gore, he's my fav member, guess Alan was a fan of NO and Martin more JD as admitted in 1984 interview, but FLOOD talks like he CREATED this originally, its one thing to reflect influence, but another to blatantly rip, well what can I say, Moroder and Syvelster probably think this of New Order, hahah. entertaining video, almost. I think Flood should talk about the making of MOVEMENT, as he was engineer and why he chose the vocal mic he did.... hmm

its pretty obvious what shes saying - Flood ripped of new order for DM. I know what she means "toiuched by the hand of god AND True Faith" which both pre-date vioolator by 3 years are very, very similar to the bass line flood used in enjoy the silence. dont be men to someone just because their english isnt perfect!

I remember Peter Hook was interviewed on KROQ around ETS was released. The dj asked him about dm and Peter said ETS ripped off new order. The dj was excited and thought he was going to get Peter to rag on dm, but he ended the conversation by shrugging it off and said it was OK because new order had ripped off dm too.

how are you so sure that wilder did it? maybe it was dave's notes and the band decided to make it on synth? why so sure

On the documentary included with Violator's 2006 remaster release, Alan said he suggested it should be an up-tempo dance track. And Flood said that he and Alan worked together to create the bulk of the music. And the choir chords seem to be lost from the session stems.
